あなたがたの光をこの民の前に輝かせて、この民があなたがたの善い行いを見て、天におられるあなたがたの父をあがめるようにしなさい。マタイ書５：１６

Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works, and glorify your Father which is in heaven.  Matthew 5:16

In this short scripture, given by our Savior, Jesus Christ, in the Sermon on the Mount, we are given simple and clear instructions on how we are expected to live our lives.  There is nothing complicated or difficult about his teaching.  

私たちの救い主イエス・キリストが山上の教訓で語られたこの短い聖句は、私たちがどう生きるべきか簡単で明瞭に教えています。それは複雑で難解な教えなどではありません。

As followers of Jesus Christ, we are commanded to “let our light shine”.  What does that mean?

イエス・キリストに従う者として「自らの光を放つ」よう戒めを受けています。それはどういう意味でしょう？

It means that we are to be examples of true followers of Jesus Christ.  It means that we are to show others about the gospel of Jesus Christ by the way that we live and act.  Our behavior should be a silent testimony to others about our faith in Jesus Christ.

私たちはイエス・キリストに真に従うもの（従者）として模範になるということです。私たちの生き方や行動によってイエス・キリストの福音を他の人に示すということです。私たちの振る舞いが他の人に対して何も言わずともイエス・キリストへの信仰の証となるべきです。

Every day, we should be “living examples”.  We should always be kind to others.  We should always be helpful .  We should always be ready to serve others.

毎日私たちは「生きる模範」でなければいけません。他の人に常に親切でなければいけません。常に手助けをしなければいけません。常に他の誰かに仕える準備が出来ていなければいけません。

If we are truly followers of Jesus Christ, others will be able to understand that fact from our actions.  They will “see our good works”.  They will see that we are different.  

私たちがもしイエス・キリストの真の従者であれば、他の人は私たちの行動からそのことを理解するでしょう。彼らは「私たちの善い行いを見」るでしょう。私たちが異なった存在であることを知るでしょう。

They will see that we obey the Word of Wisdom.  They will see that we attend Church.  They will see that families are important to us.

彼らは私たちが知恵の言葉に従っているのを見、私たちが教会に出席するのを見るでしょう。彼らは私たちが家族を大切にしていることを見るでしょう。

If someone asked a friend of yours to describe you, what would your friend say about you?  Maybe they would say they think of you as a BYU Cougar fan, or a Los Angeles Dodger fan, or a New York Yankee fan.  Maybe they would say they think of you as a good golfer, or a good singer, or a good musician.  Maybe they would say they think of you as a gardener, or a dancer, or an artist.

もし誰かがあなたの友人の一人にあなたについて尋ねたらその人はあなたについて何と答えるでしょう？もしかすると、あなたがBYU Cougar のファンとかLos Angeles Dodgers ファン、New York Yankees ファンだろうと言うかもしれません。あなたがゴルフが上手とか歌がうまい、音楽が得意だろうと言うかもしれません。あなたが庭師とかダンサー、アーティストだろうと言うかもしれません。

But would they say they think of you as a follower of Jesus Christ?

しかしあなたがイエス・キリストの従者だと思っていると言うでしょうか？

Isn’t that how we should be known?  Being known as a follower of Jesus Christ should be more important than being known as a golfer or as a singer or as BYU Cougar fan.

私たちのことをそのように知ってもらうべきではないでしょうか？イエス・キリストの従者として知られることは、あなたがゴルファーとか歌手、BYU Cougar のファンとして知られるよりはるかに重要なことのはずです。

Let’s try harder this week to “let our light shine”.  Let’s try harder to have others see us as faithful followers of Jesus Christ.  Let’s try harder to be “living examples”, that others may see our good works.

今週、頑張って「自分の光を輝かせ」ましょう。他の誰かが私たちをイエス・キリストの従者として見てくれるよう努めましょう。私たちは「生きる模範」となり他の人が私たちの良い行いを見てくれるよう努めましょう。

I know that we can each be a light that shines in the darkness.  I know that we can each live our lives so that others will want to know more about Jesus Christ.  I know that through our good works, others will receive a testimony of the gospel.

私たち一人一人が暗闇で放つ光になれる事を私は知っています。他の人がイエス・キリストについてもっと知りたいと思うような生き方ができると私は知っています。私たちの良い行いを通して他の人が福音の証を得ることを私は知っています。
