Oh God, the Eternal Father, we ask thee in the name of thy Son, Jesus Christ, to bless and sanctify this bread to the souls of all those who partake of it; that they may eat in remembrance of the body of thy Son, and witness unto thee, O God, the Eternal Father, that they are willing to take upon them the name of thy Son, and always remember him, and keep his commandments which he hath given them, that they may always have his Spirit to be with them. Moroni 4:3
Every Sunday, in Sacrament Meeting, we hear this scripture. But do we listen to it and think of its meaning? We hear it so often that we don’t always pay attention to the promises that we make as we partake of the sacrament.
私たちは日曜日の度にこの聖句を聖餐会で聞いています。しかしその意味を考えながら聞いていますか？私たちは聖餐をとるとき、その交わす約束に注意を払わず聞いていることがよくあります。
President David O. McKay taught us a powerful lesson about the importance of the sacramental prayers in a talk he gave in the October 1929 General Conference.
デビッドO マッケー大管長は聖餐の祈りの大切さについて力強いレッスンを1929 年秋の総大会で教えられました。
In his talk, he asked this question, “Do we always stop to think that we promise, witness, and obligate ourselves, in the presence of God, that we will do certain things?”
そのお話の中でこんな質問をされました。「私たちは神の御前になすべき事を行なうと約束し、証言し、その義務を引き受けることについて常に心に深く考えていますか？」
The first thing we promise is that we are willing to take upon ourselves the name of Jesus Christ. If we truly take upon ourselves the name of Jesus Christ, how should we act? How should we treat others? How should we serve? Jesus Christ is our great example. If we take upon us his name, we are promising to follow his example in all things.
私たちが最初に約束することはイエス・キリストの御名を受けることです。もし私たちが真にイエス・キリストの御名を受けるならば、どう行動すべきでしょう？他の人にどう接するべきでしょう？どう仕えるべきでしょう？イエス・キリストは私たちのすばらしい模範であられます。主の御名を受けることで私たちはすべてにおいて主の模範に従うと約束するのです。
The second thing we promise is that we will always remember him. Not just on Sunday and not just while we are at Church, but always. When we promise to always remember him, we are promising that our thoughts will always be centered on our Savior. If our thoughts are always centered on the Savior, we will treat others with kindness. We will look for opportunities to help others. We will be examples of Jesus Christ to those who see us.
次に約束することは主を常に覚えることです。日曜日や教会にいるときだけでなく常にです。私たちが主を常に覚えると約束するとき、救い主を私たちの思いの中心に置くと約束するのです。私たちの思いにおいて常にキリストを中心に置くなら他の人を親切に扱うことでしょう。他の人を助ける機会を探すことでしょう。私たちを見ている人にイエス・キリストの模範となることでしょう。
The third thing we promise is that we will keep his commandments. It does not say “keep some of his commandments”. It does not say “keep his easy commandments”. It says “keep his commandments”. This means that we will keep the Sabbath day holy. This means that we will keep the Word of Wisdom. This means that we will pay our tithing. This means that we will say our prayers and study the scriptures each day.
三番目に約束することは主の戒めを守ることです。「幾つかの戒めを守りなさい」とは述べていません。「守りやすい戒めを守りなさい」とも述べていません。「主の戒めを守りなさい」と述べています。それは安息日を清く保つということです。それは知恵の言葉を守るということです。それは什分の一を収めるということです。それは毎日祈りと聖典の勉強を行なうということです。
It also means that we will serve in our callings. It means that we will do our home teaching. It means that we will be willing to accept and complete assignments to clean the chapel, to visit the elderly and the sick, to help others come to Church. It means that we will keep all the commandments that the Savior has given to us.
またそれは受けている召しを果すということです。ホームティーチングを行なったり、教会堂をきれいにする責任を喜んで受け実行すること、お年寄りや病気の人を見舞い、他の人が教会に来れるよう助けてあげることです。それは救い主が私たちに与えられたすべての戒めを守ることなのです。
I know that we can receive great spiritual strength as we listen to the sacrament prayers. But listening is not enough. We must then keep the promises that we have made. We must take upon us the name of Jesus Christ. We must always remember him. We must keep his commandments.
私は聖餐の祈りを聞くとき偉大な霊的な力を受けることが出来ると知っています。しかし聞くだけでは十分ではありません。私たちは交わした約束を守らねばなりません。私たちはイエス・キリストの御名を引き受けなければなりません。常に主を覚え、主の戒めを守らねばなりません。
By doing these things, we will receive greater faith. We will receive greater spiritual strength. We will receive greater peace and happiness.
そうすることで私たちは更に強い信仰を受けるのです。より強い霊的な力を受けるでしょう。更なる平安と幸せを受けるでしょう。
I know that these things are true.
それらが真実だと私は知っています。
As we prepare to partake of the sacrament this Sunday, let’s try harder to listen to the words of the prayers. Let’s try harder to keep the promises that we make. Let’s try harder to be worthy to partake of the sacrament.
安息日に聖餐をとろうとするとき、もっと熱心に祈りの言葉に耳を傾けましょう。私たちが交わす約束を守るよう更に努力しましょう。聖餐をとるのによりふさわしくあるよう頑張りましょう。
