さて、わたしの同胞よ、あなたがたがこの御言葉を心の中に植えて、それがふくらみ始めたら、あなたがたの信仰によってそれを養い育ててほしい。そうすれば見よう、それはあなたがたの心の中で生長して、永遠の命をもたらす木になるであろう。そのときに、神があなたがたのために、神の御子の喜びによって重荷を軽くしてくださるように。これまで述べてきたことは、もしあなたがたにこれを行う意志さえあれば、すべて行えることである。アルマ章３３：２３

And now, my brethren, I desire that ye shall plant this word in your hearts, and as it beginneth to swell even so nourish it by your faith.  And behold, it will become a tree, springing up in you unto everlasting life.  And then may God grant unto you that your burdens may be light, through the joy of his Son.  And even all this can ye do if ye will.  Alma 33:23

In this short scripture, Alma gives us many important instructions in just a few words.

この短い聖句で、アルマは数少ない言葉をもって私たちに多くの大切な教えを残しています。

Alma was teaching the poor people of the Zoramites about faith.  He compared gaining faith to planting a seed.  He taught them that they not only had to plant the seed, but they had to take care of the seed.  If they did these things, the seed of faith would grow into a strong tree.

アルマは貧しいゾーラム人に信仰について教えていました。彼は信仰の成長を種蒔きにたとえました。種を蒔くだけでなく、その種の世話をしなければならないと教えています。もしそうするならば信仰の種は丈夫な木に育つのです。

In this scripture, Alma summarizes all his teaching to the people.  He reminds us of what we need to do and explains the blessings that will come if we are obedient.

アルマが人々に教えたすべてをこの聖句で要約しています。彼は、私たちにすべきことを思い起こさせ、従順なものが受ける祝福について説明しています。

First, he again reminds us that we need to take the first step.  We need to take action.  We need to plant the seed.  We need to want to have faith.

まず、彼はそのために踏まねばならぬ段階を教えています。私たちは行動しなければなりません。種を植え、信仰を持とうという望みを持たねばなりません。

Next, as the seed beings to grow, we need to nourish it.  That means that we need to keep the commandments.  We need to attend our Church meetings.  We need to serve in our callings.

次に、種が成長するように信仰も養い育てねばなりません。つまり、戒めを守らねばならないということです。教会の集会に出席し、自分が受けている召しを果さねばなりません。

If we do all these things, the small seed of faith will eventually grow into a large tree.  Our faith will be strong.  Our faith will withstand the storms of life.  Our faith will help us resist temptation.

それらをすべて行なえば、小さな信仰の種も、やがて大きな木に成長するのです。信仰が強められるのです。私たちの信仰は人生の嵐の中でもビクともしないのです。私たちの信仰は誘惑に負けない助けとなります。

And, if we do all these things, what blessings will we receive?

ではそれらをすべて行なうとき、どんな祝福を受けるのでしょう？

Will our life be easy and without problems?  Will everything go well for us?  Will we never have any trials?

私たちの生活が容易で問題もなく全ての事がらが順調に行くのでしょうか？試練など無くなるのでしょうか？

No, that is not what Alma teaches us.   He does not say that we will not have any trials.

いいえ、それはアルマの教えとはちがいます。私たちは何の試練も受けないとは言っていません。

The blessing that is promised to us is that our “burdens may be light”.  We will still have burdens.  We will still have trials.  We will still have difficult times.

私たちに約束された祝福は私たちの「重荷を軽くしてくだる」と言うものです。重荷はなくなりません。私たちは試練や苦難をかならず経験します。

But, those burdens will be made light.  We will be given strength to endure.  We will be blessed by the Lord.

しかしその重荷を軽くしてくださるのです。忍耐する力をくださいます。私たちは主から祝福されるのです。

Can we actually do this?  

私たちは本当にそれが出来ますか？

We are given another promise in this scripture.  We are told “even all this you can do if ye will”.  That means that every one of us can do this.  We can all receive great faith.  We can all enjoy “light burdens”.  We can all be blessed.

私たちはこの聖句で、もう一つの約束を受けています。「もしあなたがたにこれを行う意志さえあれば、すべて行える」と言われています。私たちは誰であれ、こうすることが出来るということです。だれでも強い信仰を持てるのです。だれでも「軽くなった重荷」を楽しめるのです。私たちはだれでも祝福されるのです。

The most important part of that scripture is “if ye will”.  We can receive those blessings.  But it is dependent upon our actions.  If we don’t plant the seed, if we don’t nourish the seed, it will never grow into a strong tree.  But if we follow the teachings of Alma, we can all receive the promised blessing.

この聖句で最も大切な箇所は「もしあなたがたにこれを行う意志さえあれば」というところです。私たちはこれらの祝福を享受できます。けれどもそれはすべて私たちの行いによります。もし私たちは種を植えず、養い育てなければ強い木には育ちません。しかし、もしアルマの教えに従うなら私たちは誰でも約束された祝福を受けれるのです。

I know that the things that Alma teaches us are true.  I know that we have a duty to first plant the seed and then to nourish it by our obedience.  I know that this blessing is available to everyone.  

私はアルマの教えたことが真実だと知っています。私たちにはまず従順に種を植え養い育てる義務があることを知っています。この祝福はすべての人に用意されていることを知っています。

Let’s try harder this week to nourish our own seed of faith.  It may only be a small plant today, but if we follow the teachings of Alma, it will grow into a strong tree.  

今週、頑張って信仰の種を養い育てましょう。今は小さな木でも、アルマの教えに従うなら、やがて丈夫な樹木となるのです。
