そしてその木の実を食べると、わたしの心は非常に大きな喜びに満たされた。それでわたしは家族にも食べてほしいと思い始めた。その実が、ほかのどんな実よりも好ましいことが分かったからである。ニーファイ第一書８：１２

And as I partook of the fruit thereof it filled my soul with exceeding great joy; wherefore, I began to be desirous that my family should partake of it also; for I knew that it was desirable above all other fruit.      1 Nephi 8:12

We have all had experiences similar to the experience that Lehi tells us about in this scripture.

私たちもこの聖句でリーハイが述べているような経験をしています。

We have all “partaken of the fruit”.  

私たちは皆「その実を食べ」たことがあります。

What does that mean?  It means that we have all learned about the gospel of Jesus Christ.  It means that we have repented of our sins.  It means that we have received a testimony by the power of the Holy Ghost.

それはどういう意味でしょうか？私たちはイエス・キリストの福音を学んだことがあると言うことです。私たちは罪を悔い改めたと言うことです。私たちは聖霊の力によって証を受けていると言うことです。

The Holy Ghost has testified to each of us that the gospel is true.  We have all felt that “exceeding great joy” that Lehi talks about in this scripture.

聖霊は福音が確かであると私たちに直接証してくれました。リーハイがこの聖句で述べている「大きな喜び」を私たちは感じています。

Each week, as we partake of the sacrament, we can again repent of our sins and feel that “exceeding great joy”.

毎週、聖餐を取るたびに私たちは再び罪を悔い改め「大きな喜び」を感じます。

Most of us have also had the same feelings as Lehi felt.  After we have felt that “exceeding great joy”, we want those whom we love to feel it also.  We want our family members to receive that same blessing.  We want them to be as happy as we are.

私たちもリーハイと同じ気持ちを感じたことがあります。私たちは「非常に大きな喜び」を感じた後、愛する人々にも同じ喜びを感じて欲しいと思います。私たちの家族にも同じ祝福を受けて欲しいと思います。私たちと同じように幸せになって欲しいと思います。

Unfortunately, most of us have also had the same difficult experiences as Lehi did.  He had family members that he loved very much who refused to “partake of the fruit”.   Most of us also have family members who have refused to “partake of the fruit” or who, once having partaken of the fruit, are no longer willing to do so.

残念なことに私たちの中にもリーハイと同じ困難な経験をした人が多くいることでしょう。彼にも家族の中に心から愛しているのに「その実を食べ」なかった者がいました。私たちの中にも「その実を食べ」ることを拒否したり、一度はその実を食べものの、もうそのようにしたくない家族のメンバーがいるかもしれません。

What is our duty?

では私たちは何をすべきでしょう？

Until the time of his death, Lehi was still trying to teach his family about the “fruit” and its blessings.  He did not give up just because they refused to partake.  He continued to love them and to teach them and to bear his testimony to them.

リーハイは亡くなるまで、その「実」と祝福について家族に熱心に教え続けました。彼はただ彼らがその実を拒絶したと言うだけで諦めたりしませんでした。

Sadly, in spite of Lehi’s constant efforts, Laman and Lemuel did not repent and accept the gospel.  At least they did not in this life.  But Lehi never stopped trying.  

悲しいことですが、リーハイの熱心な努力にも関わらず、レーマンとレムエルは悔い改めず福音も受け入れませんでした。少なくともこの世においては。しかしリーハイは決して諦めませんでした。

We can learn from the example of Lehi.  We can continue loving those family members who are not living the gospel.  We can keep encouraging them.  We can keep praying for them.  We must never give up.

私たちはリーハイの模範から学ぶことが出来ます。私たちは福音に従った生活をしていない家族も愛し続けねばなりません。励ましつづけ、彼らのために祈ることが出来ます。諦めてはいけません。

Just as importantly, we must follow the example of Lehi and make sure that we keep our own testimony strong.  We need to study, pray, repent, and serve.  We need to keep “partaking of the fruit” so that we and our families can, some day, receive that “exceeding great joy”.  Whether in this life or in the life to come, that day will come if we are faithful.

そしてもう一つ同じように大切なのが、私たちはリーハイの模範に従い自身の証を強く保っているようにしなければいけません。福音を学び、祈り、悔い改め、奉仕しなければいけません。私たちは家族がいつの日か「大きな喜び」を受けれる様「その実を食べ」続けねばなりません。私たちが忠実ならばこの世か来るべき世にその日は必ず来るのです。

Let’s try harder this week to follow the example of Lehi.  Let’s try harder to help our family members to know of our love for them and for our Savior.  Let’s be the best examples we can be.  I know that if we do these things, we will all receive that “exceeding great joy”.

今週もリーハイの模範に従って頑張りましょう。私たちが彼らや主を愛していることを家族がわかるよう努力しましょう。私たちに出来る最善の模範を示しましょう。そうするならば「大きな喜び」を享受できることでしょう。
