Wherefore, meaning the church, thou shalt give heed unto all his words and commandments which he shall give unto you as he receiveth them, walking in all holiness before me; for his word ye shall receive, as if from mine own mouth, with all patience and faith.  Doctrine and Covenants 21:4-5

This scripture was given by the Lord through the Prophet Joseph Smith to the membership of the Church.  It explains the authority of the prophet and our duty to follow him.

この聖句は預言者ジョセフ・スミスを通して教会の会員宛てに主が与えられたものです。預言者の権威と私たちが彼に従うべき義務について説明しています。

As members of the Church, we believe that the Lord has once again called prophets to lead us.  We believe that President Thomas S. Monson is the prophet of the Lord today.

教会の会員として私たちは主が私たちを導くために再び預言者を建てられたことを信じています。私たちはトーマスS モンソン大管長が今日の預言者だと信じています。

If we believe that President Monson is a prophet, what is our duty?

私たちがトーマスS モンソン大管長が預言者であると信じているのであれば、私たちにはどのような義務があるのでしょう。

We are told in this scripture that we are to “give heed unto all his words and commandments”.  In English, “to give heed” is a strong verb.  It means more than just listening.  It means more than just agreeing.  It means that we both accept his words as truth and we obey those words.

この聖句で私たちは「与えられるすべてを心に留める」必要があると教えられています。英語で『to give heed』と言う言葉は力強い動詞です。単に聞く以上の意味があります。単に同意する以上の意味があります。それは彼の言葉を真実として受け入れ、それに従うと言う意味なのです。

How are we to act?  

私たちはどう行動したら良いのでしょう。

We are told that we are to do all these things “walking in all holiness before me”.  So not only do we need to “give heed” to his words, we must also keep all the commandments which we have been given.  We are to be a holy people.  We are to be the people of the Lord.

私たちは「主の前を完全に聖く歩み」すべての事をするように言われています。預言者の言葉を「心に留める」だけでなく、与えられたすべての戒を守らねばなりません。私たちは聖なる民でなければなりません。主の民でなければなりません。

Why do we need to “give heed” to the words of the prophet?  

なぜ預言者の言葉に「心を留め」なければいけないのでしょう？

The Lord says that we are to receive the words of the prophet “as if from my own mouth”.  In other words, we are taught in this scripture that the prophet speaks as directed by the Lord.  

主は預言者の言葉を「私の口からでたかのように」受けとめなさいと言われています。言いかえれば、この聖句で預言者は主から導かれて話すのだと私たちは教わっています。

Our duty is to follow the prophet with patience and faith, knowing that he is directed by the Lord.  That is really the only important thing.

私たちの義務は預言者が主から導きを受けていることを理解し、忍耐と信仰をもって従うことです。それだけが重要な事なのです。

I know that President Monson is a prophet of God.  I know that if we follow his counsel we will be on the right path.  I know that if we go forward with faith, we will receive all the blessings that have been promised.

私はモンソン大管長が神の預言者だと知っています。彼の勧告に従うことで正しい道にとどまることができると私は知っています。信仰を持って前進するならば約束されたすべての祝福を享受できると私は知っています。
