御使は言った、『恐れるな。見よ、すべての民に与えられる大きな喜びを、あなたがたに伝える。きょうダビデの町に、あなたがたのために救い主がお生れになった。このかたこそ主なるキリストである。
あなたがたは、幼な子が布にくるまって飼葉おけのなかに寝かしてあるのを見るであろう。それが、あなたがたに与えられるしるしである。』するとたちまち、おびただしい天の軍勢があらわれ、御使と一緒になって神をさんびして言った。ルカ２：１０－１４
And the angel said unto them, Fear not: for behold, I bring you good tidings of great joy, which shall be unto all people. For unto you is born this day in the city of David, a Savior, which is Christ the Lord. And this shall be a sign unto you: Ye shall find the babe wrapped in swaddling clothes, lying in a manger. And suddenly there was with the angel a multitude of the heavenly host praising God and saying, Glory to God in the highest and on earth peace, good will toward men. Luke 2:10-14
Luke brings us this message of great joy. As the prophets had foretold for centuries, the wonderful day had finally come. This was the day that our Savior was born!
ルカは大きな喜びの知らせを私たちに伝えています。預言者が何世紀にもわたって伝えてきたその素晴らしい日がついにやってきました。それは救い主がお生まれになった日でした’。
Luke records that “a multitude of the heavenly host” sang praises to God on that holy night. Perhaps you were one of those angels in that great heavenly choir.
ルカは「おびただしい天の軍勢」が聖なる日に神をたたえたと記録しています。おそらくあなたもその天の大聖歌隊の天使の一人だったかもしれません。
Our Savior, Jesus Christ, had been chosen before this world was created. He was to come to earth and, through his great Atonement, provide a way for each of us to repent. He would open the gate that would allow us to return to live with our Heavenly Father once again.
この世が創造される前に私たちの救い主イエス・キリストは選ばれていたのです。主は偉大な贖いを通して私たち各々に悔い改めの道を備えてくださるためこの地上に来ることになっていました。主は私たちが再び天父の元に戻り共に暮らせるよう門を開いてくださいました。
The eternal happiness of all of Heavenly Father’s children depends upon that great Atonement. Without it, we could never return to Heavenly Father. We would be lost and miserable forever.
私たち、すなわち天父のすべての子供たちの永遠の幸福はその偉大な贖いによるのです。それが無くては私たちは天父の元に戻ることなどできないのです。私たちは迷い、永遠に悲惨な状態にいることになるのです。
At last the great night had come. It was time for the Savior to be born and to begin his mortal ministry. Of course all the angels were excited and sang praises to God!
偉大な夜がついにやってきました。それは救い主が誕生し、この死すべき世において教導の業を始められる時でした。もちろん天使はみな喜び神をさんびして歌いました。
There was also great excitement among the Nephites. They were also waiting for the sign of the birth of the Savior. In fact, it was a very serious matter for them. Wicked people had decided that if the sign of the Savior’s birth was not given by a certain date, they would kill everyone who believed in Jesus Christ.
またニーファイの民の中でも大きな喜びがありました。彼らは救い主の誕生のしるしを待ち望んでいました。実はそれは彼らにとってとても重大な出来事でした。邪悪な人々はある決めた日までに救い主の誕生のしるしが無ければイエス・キリストを信じたものを全員殺すと決めていたのです。
On the night before the day that they were to be killed, the wonderful sign was given. There was a day and a night and a day with no darkness. This was the sign that had been given by prophecy by the Lamanite prophet Samuel. By this sign, the Nephites knew about the birth of the Savior.
その人々が殺されるはずだった前日、輝かしいしるしが与えられました。昼も夜の暗くならない日がありました。それはレーマン人の預言者サムエルによって預言されたしるしでした。そのしるしによってニーファイの民は救い主の誕生を知ったのです。
We know that the Savior was born in the spring time, not in winter. Shepherds do not take their flocks out into the fields during the cold winter weather. They take them out in the spring, when the weather becomes warm.
私たちは救い主が冬ではなく春にお生れになったことを知っています。羊飼いは寒い冬の気候に群れを牧草地へ連れ出すことはしません。彼らは気候が暖かくなる春に連れ出します。
But the actual date is not important. Whether we celebrate the birth of the Savior in December or in April does not matter. What is important is that we remember the birth of the Savior and remember his great atoning sacrifice.
しかし確かな日付など重要ではありません。救い主の誕生を祝うのが12月であろうが4月であろうがかまいません。重要なのは私たちが救い主の誕生を祝い偉大な贖いの犠牲を覚えるということです。
As we celebrate this Christmas season, may we always remember the true meaning of what we are celebrating. May we always remember our Savior Jesus Christ and his great Atonement. May we always remember that it is only through Jesus Christ that we are able to repent. May we always remember that it is only by keeping his commandments that we will be able to return and live with our Heavenly Father again.
このクリスマスの季節に私たちは何を祝っているのか、真の意味を常に忘れないようにしましょう。私たちの救い主イエス・キリストと主の偉大な贖いを忘れないようにしましょう。イエス・キリストによってのみ私たちは悔い改めができることを覚えていましょう。主の戒めを守ることによってのみ私たちは再び天父の元にもどり共に暮らせることを忘れないようにしましょう。
Everything that we have faith in, everything that we hope for, everything that we look forward to, is only made possible by the Atonement of Jesus Christ. He is our Savior and our Redeemer.
私たちが信じていること、希望を持っていること、また待ち望んでいることは何でもイエス・キリストの贖いによって可能となるのです。イエス・キリストは私たちの救い主であり贖い主なのです。
