さて、前に話したように、あなたがたにはすでに非常に多くの証拠があるので、最後まで悔い改めの日を引き延ばすことのないように切に勧める。永遠に備えるためにわたしたちに与えられている現世の生涯を終えると、見よ、もしわたしたちが現世にいる間に時間を有益に用いなければ、後から暗闇の夜がやって来る。そして、そこでは何の働きもできない。

アルマ章３４：３３

And now, as I said unto you before, as ye have had so many witnesses, therefore, I beseech of you that you do not procrastinate the day of your repentance until the end; for after this day of life, which is given us to prepare for eternity, behold, if we do not improve our time while in this life, then cometh the night of darkness wherein there can be no labor performed.  Alma 34:33

We often read verse 32, the verse right before this one, but verse 33 also has an important message.

この聖句のすぐ前にある32 節は時々読みますが、この33 節にも大切な教えがあります。

This scripture was given at the time Alma and Amulek were teaching the poor people among the Zoramites.  Amulek reminds them in this scripture that we have only a short time to prepare for eternity.  

この聖句はアルマとアミュレクがゾーラム人の中の貧しい人々に教えていた時に与えられました。アミュレクはこの聖句で私たちには永遠に備えるための時間がほんの僅かしかないことを思い起こさせています。

This scripture is often used to teach people that they must repent and be baptized.  It is not right to wait until the end of your life to repent.

この聖句は時折、悔い改めてバプテスマを受けるべき人を教えるのに使われます。悔い改めをこの生涯が終わるまで引き延ばすことはよくありません。

But it also contains a message for those who have repented and who have been baptized.  This message is for us.

しかしここにはすでに悔い改めてバプテスマを受けた人、つまり私たちへのメッセージも含まれています。

In the scripture, Amulek teaches us that we must “improve our time while in this life”.  

この聖句でアミュレクは「現世にいる間に時間を有益に用いる」よう教えています。

What does that mean?

それはどういうことでしょう？

We know that this life is only a small part of our eternal existence.  Before we were born, we lived with Heavenly Father and were taught about the great Plan of Happiness.  We learned about the commandments.  We learned about the things that we need to do in order to progress.

私たちは人生が永遠から見てとても小さなものであることを知っています。生まれてくる前、私たちは天父と共に住んでいました。そして偉大な幸福の計画について学びました。戒めを学び、進歩成長するために必要な事柄についても学びました。

We were all obedient and kept the commandments during our pre-earth life.  Because of our obedience, we were allowed to come to this earth and to receive a physical body.  We are here on earth to show Heavenly Father that we will obey his commandments here, too.

前世では私たちは全員従順で戒めも守っていました。従順であったので私たちはこの地上に来て肉体を受けることを許されたのです。私たちはこの世でも戒めに従うことを天父に示すためにここにいるのです。

We have many lessons to learn in this life.  Some lessons are easy and some lessons are very hard.  We knew that before we came here.  We understood that this would be a time of testing and of trials.  We understood that we needed to progress in this life.

私たちは人生で多くの事を学ばねばなりません。易しいものもあれば非常に難しいものもあります。私たちはここに来る前にそのことを知っていました。ここが試しや試練の時であることを理解していました。私たちは生涯を通して進歩する必要があることを理解していました。

Just doing the things we learned in the pre-earth life is not enough.  If we want to return and live with Heavenly Father again, we need to improve and grow during our time in this life.  We need to do more.  We need to learn more.  We need to grow more.  

私たちは前世で学んだことを行い続けていても十分ではありません。天父の元に戻り共に暮らしたければこの自分の生涯を通して進歩成長しなければなりません。私たちはもっと行動し、学び、進歩しなければなりません。

We only have a short time in this life to prepare for eternity.  Our eternal happiness is dependent upon our efforts to improve while in this life.  

私たちには永遠に備えるためのこの現世での時間は少ししかありません。私たちの永遠の幸福はこの現世で進歩しようとする努力の結果によるのです。

Let’s remember what Amulek has taught us.  Let’s start right now to improve our time.  Let’s not procrastinate making the changes in our life that are needed.  Let’s make good use of the time that is provided to us to prepare for eternity.

アミュレクが教えてくれたことを忘れないようにしましょう。今すぐ時間を有益に使い始めましょう。自分の生活で変えるべきことがあれば引き延ばさないようにしましょう。永遠の備えをするために与えられた時間を有効に使いましょう。
