またレムエルに向かって言った。「おお、おまえはこの谷のように、主の戒めを守ることにおいて堅く確固として、揺るぎなくあるように。第一ニーファイ２：１０

And he also spake unto Lemuel: O that thou mightest be like unto this valley, firm and steadfast, and immovable in keeping the commandments of the Lord!  1 Nephi 2:10

This scripture records Lehi’s words to his son Lemuel, just after they left Jerusalem to journey into the wilderness.  Lehi often had to encourage Laman and Lemuel to keep the commandments of the Lord.  Unlike Nephi, Laman and Lemuel did not believe that their father was led by the Lord.  They wanted to go back to the easy life they had known in Jerusalem.

この聖句はリーハイが息子レムエルに残した言葉です、エルサレムを出発し荒れ野へ旅立った後、リーハイは度々レーマンとレムエルに主の戒めを守るよう諭さねばなりませんでした。ニーファイと違い、レーマンとレムエルは父が主に導かれていることを信じていませんでした。彼らはエルサレムの楽な暮らしに戻りたいと望んでいました。

It is interesting that Lehi uses the image of a valley as being “firm and steadfast”.  When we think of something firm, steadfast, and immoveable, we usually think of mountains.  The hymn “Carry On” starts with the words “Firm as the mountains around us”. Anyone not familiar with the culture and images of the Middle East would have used the image of a mountain in this verse.  But in the Middle East , there are very few mountains.  In the deserts, it is the valleys that are “firm and steadfast”.  

リーハイが「固く確固としている」ことを谷という概念を使ったのは興味深いことです。私たちが何か堅く確固として、揺るがないものを思うとき通常、山を思い浮かべます。讃美歌「山のごとく強く」は「山のごとくわれらたつは」という言葉で始まっています。中東の文化や概念に馴染みがない者ならば、この節で山という概念を使ったことでしょう。しかし中東では山は殆どありません。砂漠では「堅く確固な」のは谷なのです。

Just like Lemuel, we should always be firm and steadfast, and immovable in keeping the commandments of the Lord.  

レムエルのように私たちも主の戒めを守ることにおいて常に堅く確固として、揺るぎなくあるべきです。

How can we do that?  

どうしたらそのように出来るでしょう？

To be firm and steadfast, we must have a strong foundation.  The following five principles will give us the strong foundation we need to be immovable in keeping the commandments of the Lord.

堅く確固としているには私たちはしっかりした土台が必要です。下記の五つの原則は私たちが主の戒めを守ることにおいて揺るぎなくあるためのしっかりした土台を作ってくれます。

  • Heavenly Father lives.  He loves us.  He sent his Son, Jesus Christ, to atone for our sins.  It is through the atonement of Jesus Christ that we can repent and be worthy to live with Heavenly Father and Jesus Christ again.

天父は生きておられ、私たちを愛しておられます。天父は御子イエス・キリストを私たちの罪を贖うために送ってくださいました。イエス・キリストの贖いにより私たちは悔い改めて天父とイエス・キリストとともに住むのにふさわしくなれるのです。

  • Joseph Smith saw God the Father and Jesus Christ.  They gave him instructions.  The gospel of Jesus Christ was restored in these last days by the Prophet Joseph Smith.

ジョセフ・スミスは父なる神とイエス・キリストを見ました。そして教えを受けました。イエス・キリストの福音は預言者ジョセフ・スミスを通してこの末日に回復されました。

  • The Book of Mormon is a second witness of Jesus Christ.  It was translated by the gift and power of God.  It is the word of God.

モルモン書はイエス・キリストを証しする第二の書物です。それは神の賜物と力により翻訳されました。それは確かに神のみ言葉です。

  • The Savior organized a Church during his mortal ministry that included prophets and apostles.  His Church is led today by prophets and apostles with the same priesthood authority as those in the days of Christ.

救い主は現生で教導の業に携わっておられた時、預言者と使徒を含む教会を組織されました。その教会は現在も預言者と使徒によりキリストの時代と同じ神権の権能により導かれています。

  • Thomas S. Monson is God’s prophet on earth today.  If we follow his counsel and instructions, we will be firm and steadfast, and immovable in keeping the commandments of the Lord.

トーマス・Ｓ・モンソンは今日地上における神の預言者です。彼の勧告と指示に従えば私たちは主の戒めを守るのに堅く確固として、揺るぎなくいることができます。

I know that these things are true.  I know that Heavenly Father loves us.  I know that the Prophet Joseph Smith saw God the Father and Jesus Christ.  I know that the Book of Mormon is true.  I know that we have prophets and apostles on the earth today.  I know that President Monson is our prophet.

私はこれらの事が真実だと知っています。天父は私たちを愛しておられ、預言者ジョセフ・スミスが神とイエス・キリストの御二方を見たことを知っています。モルモン書は確かです。今日も地上に預言者と使徒がいることを知っています。モンソン大管長は預言者であると知っています。

With these truths as our foundation, we will be firm and steadfast.  We will be immovable in keeping the commandments of the Lord.  When temptations come and the storms of life beat upon us, we will be safe, just like the wise man who built his house on a strong foundation.

これらの真実を私たちの土台とするならば私たちは堅く確固としていられるでしょう。私たちは主の戒めを守ることにおいて揺るぎなくいることができるでしょう。誘惑が来て人生の嵐が私たちを打ち付ける時、しっかりした土台の上に家を建てる賢者のように私たちは安全でいられるのです。

Let’s resolve to be firm and steadfast for this week.  Let’s be immovable in keeping the commandments of the Lord.  Let’s be wise and build upon the rock of truth.

今週、堅く確固としているよう決意して過ごしましょう。主の戒めを守るのに揺るぐことのないようにしましょう。賢く真理の岩の上にたちましょう。
