Wherefore, by their fruits ye shall know them. 3 Nephi 14:20
When the Savior visited the Nephite people after his resurrection, he taught them many of the same things that he taught the Jews. In this scripture, the Savior teaches the Nephites how to know if a person is good or bad.
救い主は復活後ニーファイ人を訪れられたときユダヤ人に教えられたのと同じ多くのことを彼らにも教えられました。この聖句では救い主が人の善悪を見分ける方法をニーファイ人に教えられました。
The Savior uses the example of a fruit tree. He tells the people that a good tree brings good fruit and a bad tree brings bad fruit. He reminds them that they cannot get good grapes from thorns or good figs from thistles.
救い主は果物の木のたとえを使い、良い木は良い実をつけ、悪い木は悪い実をつけると教えてられました。いばらから良いブドウは採れずアザミから良いイチジクは採れないと教えておられます。
He uses this example from daily life to teach an important principle. The principle is that it does not matter what we say. It is what we do that is important. Good people should do go things.
救い主は大切な原則を教えるのに身近なたとえを使われます。その原則は私たちが何を言うかはさほど大切ではなく、何を行うかが大切だということです。良い人は良い行いをするものです。
The example of a fruit tree also teaches us that good things do not happen immediately. Just as it takes time for the fruit to appear and then to ripen, so it takes time for us to show our good works. It takes hard work, slow and steady, day by day, before we see the fruits of our labors.
果物の木のたとえでは良いことは即座に起きないことも教えています。果物が現れ、実るまでに時間がかかるように、私たちも良い業が現れるのには時間がかかります。私たちの働きが実を結ぶまで日一日とゆっくりでも着実に努力が必要なのです。
The State of California has inspection checkpoints on the various freeways that come in to California. The purpose of the checkpoints is to prevent diseased fruit or bad fruit bugs from getting in to California and infecting the fruit crops.
カリフォルニア州には州に入る多くのフリーウェイに検疫所があります。検疫所の目的は病気の果物や悪い虫などがカリフォルニアに入ってきて果実に感染するのを防ぐためです。
As you drive back in to California from Utah, for example, you must stop at a checkpoint and show that you have no “bad fruit” with you. If you have any bad fruit, the checkpoint officers will take it and destroy it.
例えばユタからカリフォルニアに車で戻ってくるとき、検疫所で停止し「悪い果実」を持っていないことを示さなければなりません。もし持っているならば検疫所の役人が没収し廃棄します。
On the road to Heaven, there are spiritual “fruit checkpoints”. These spiritual checkpoints help to keep us on the straight and narrow path.
天へ戻る道には霊の「果実検疫所」があります。その霊の検疫所は私たちが細くて真っすぐな道に留まっておれるよう助けてくれます。
When you come to a spiritual “fruit checkpoint”, do you have only good fruit? Or do you sometimes find that some bad fruit has gotten in to your life?
霊の「果実検疫所」に来る時にあなたは良い果実だけを携えていますか？それとも知らぬ間に悪い果実もあなたの人生に入り込んだりしていませんか？
As followers of Jesus Christ, we are expected to bring forth good fruit. We are expected to do good things. We are expected to be a “good tree” bringing forth good fruit.
イエス・キリストの従者として私たちは良い実だけを結ばせるよう求められています。善い行いをするよう求められているのです。良い実を結ぶ「良い木」になるよう求められているのです。
When we come to a spiritual “fruit checkpoint”, will we have any “good fruit”? When the spiritual fruit checkpoint officers interview us, what will they find?
霊の「果実検疫所」にやって来る時、いくらかの「良い果実」があるでしょうか？果実検疫所の役人が私たちに質問するとき彼らは何を見つけるでしょう？
We bring forth good fruit by small and simple things. We bring forth good fruit by serving others. We bring forth good fruit by serving in our callings. We bring forth good fruit by being kind to those around us. We bring forth good fruit by being an example of good.
私たちは小さな簡単なことによって良い実を結ばせます。他の誰かに奉仕することで良い実を結ばせます。自分の召しを果たすことで良い実を結ばせます。周りの人に親切にすることで良い実を結ばせます。良い模範になることで良い実を結ばせます。
We do not have to accomplish some great task to bring forth good fruit. It is by keeping the commandments, by saying our prayers, by following the counsel of prophets and apostles, by reading the Book of Mormon, and by doing many other small and simple things.
私たちは良い実を結ばせるのに何か大きく立派な行いを成し遂げる必要はありません。それは戒めを守ること、お祈りをすること、預言者や使徒の勧告に従うこと、モルモン書を読むことなど、多くの小さく簡単なことを行うことで出来るのです。
It is not difficult. It just takes a determination to follow our Savior and a willingness to take action. Even very small things can bring forth much good fruit.
難しくはありません。救い主に従い、行動しようとする強い決意だけが必要なのです。とても小さく簡単なことですら沢山の良い実を結ぶのです。
Let’s look for opportunities each day to bring forth good fruit. Let’s look for opportunities to serve others. Let’s look for opportunities to spread the gospel. Let’s look for opportunities to do good things.
毎日良い実を結ぶ機会を探しましょう。誰かに仕える機会を探しましょう。福音を広める機会を探しましょう。善い行いをする機会を探しましょう。
I know that each of us can bring forth good fruit. I know that, as we do so, we will receive all the blessings that have been promised to those who keep the commandments of the Lord.
私は誰でも良い実を結べることを知っています。その様にすることで私たちは主の戒めを守る者に約束されたすべての祝福を受けることを知っています。
