永遠の命は、唯一の、まことの神でいますあなたと、また、あなたがつかわされたイエス・キリストとを知ることであります。ヨハネ書１７：３

And this is life eternal, that they might know thee the only true God, and Jesus Christ, whom thou hast sent.  John 17:3

This scripture is from the great prayer offered by Jesus Christ shortly before his suffering, as recorded in the 17thchapter of John.

この聖句はヨハネの福音書第17章に記録されていますが、イエス・キリストが苦しみを受けられる少し前にささげられた祈りのひとつです。

It is a very simple statement, but it has a very important message for us.

とても簡潔な内容ですが私たちにとって、とても大切な教えが含まれています。

This scripture gives the answer to the question: “How do we obtain eternal life?”.

この聖句は「永遠の生命はどのように得られるのか」という疑問に答えています。

We all want to have eternal life.  We all want to return and live with our Heavenly Father and with Jesus Christ.  We all want to live with our own families for eternity.

私たちは皆永遠の生命を欲しいと願っています。天父とイエス・キリストの元に戻り共に暮らしたいと望んでいます。私たちは家族と永遠に暮らしたいと望んでいます。

How do we do that?  

ではどうすればよいでしょう？

This scripture teaches us that, in order to have eternal life, we must know God and Jesus Christ.  

この聖句は永遠の生命を得るために私たちは神とイエス・キリストを知らねばならないと教えています。

Without learning about the gospel, we cannot receive eternal life.  Without understanding the commandments, we cannot receive eternal life.  Without knowing God and Jesus Christ, we cannot receive eternal life.

福音を学ばずして私たちは永遠の生命を得ることはできません。戒めを理解することなく私たちは永遠の生命を得ることはできません。神とイエス・キリストを知ることなく私たちは永遠の生命を得ることはできません。

In the “Lectures on Faith”, the Prophet Joseph Smith taught that the first principle of faith is a true knowledge of God.  

「信仰に関する講話」の中で預言者ジョセフ・スミスは信仰の第一原則は神について正しい知識を得ることであると教えています。

But “knowing” is only the first step.  

しかし「知ること」は最初の第一歩に他なりません。

In the gospel, it is never enough just to know the commandments.  We have to take action.  We have to keep the commandments.

福音において戒めを知るだけでは決して十分ではないのです。私たちは行動しなければなりません。戒めを守らねばならないのです。

If we want to receive eternal life, we must first learn about God and Jesus Christ.  As we learn about them, we gain faith.  As we gain faith, we want to keep the commandments.  As we keep the commandments, we become worthy to receive the ordinances of baptism and the Gift of the Holy Ghost.  

もし永遠の生命を受けたければ私たちは神とイエス・キリストについてまず学ばねばなりません。御二方について学ぶとき私たちは信仰を強めます。信仰が増すと私たちは戒めを守りたいと思います。戒めを守ると私たちはバプテスマの誓約と聖霊の賜物を受けるにふさわしくなるのです。

As we continue to grow in faith and to keep the commandments, we become worthy to receive the ordinances of the Temple, including beings sealed together as eternal families. 

信仰が成長し戒めを守り続けると私たちは永遠の家族として共に結び固められることなどを含む神殿での聖約を受けるにふさわしくなります。

Thus, as we follow these steps, as we learn about God and Jesus Christ, as we have faith, as we keep the commandments, we prepare ourselves for eternal life.  It is only through the great love of Heavenly Father and our Savior Jesus Christ that these blessings are possible.  

ですからこれらの教えに従い、神やイエス・キリストについて学び、信仰を持ち、戒めを守ることで私たちは永遠の生命を受ける準備をするのです。これらの祝福は天父と私たちの救い主イエス・キリストによってのみ可能となるのです。

This week, let’s do more to learn about God and Jesus Christ.  Let’s have greater faith in them.  Let’s repent and keep the commandments.  Let’s be worthy to receive life eternal.

今週、神とイエス・キリストについてもっと学ぶよう努力してみましょう。御二方についてよりもっと大きな信仰を持ちましょう。悔い改め、戒めを守りましょう。永遠の生命を受けるにふさわしくなりましょう。
