わたしはあなたに命じたでわないか。強く、また雄々しくあれ。あなたがどこへ行くにも、あなたの神、主が共におられるゆえ、恐れてはならない、おののいてはならない。
ヨシュア記１：９

Have I not commanded thee?  Be strong and of a good courage; be not afraid, neither be thou dismayed; for the Lord thy God is with thee withersoever thou goest.  Joshua 1:9


This was the message given to Joshua when he was called to be the leader of Israel after the death of Moses.

これはヨシュアがモーセの死後イスラエルの指導者に召された時与えられたものです。


The Lord called Joshua, but Joshua felt inadequate.  He did not think he could do all the things that Moses had done.  He did not think he was worthy of the calling.

主はヨシュアを召しましたが彼は自分が適切だとは思えませんでした。彼はモーセが行ったすべてのことなどできるはずがない思いました。彼はその召しにふさわしくないと思いました。


In response to Joshua’s doubts and concerns, the Lord gave him this message.  It is a message to all of us in all of our callings.

ヨシュアの疑いと不安にこたえて主はこのメッセージを与えました。そしてこれは現在色んな召しに携わる私たちへのメッセージでもあります。


Each of us has, at one time or another, been given a calling that we felt totally inadequate to fulfill.  Just like Joshua, we did not think we could do that calling.  We did not think we were worthy of that calling.

私たちの誰もが与えられた召しを遂行するには適切ではないと一度は感じたことがあるでしょう。ヨシュアのように私たちもその召しが果たせないと感じたことでしょう。自分にはふさわしくないと。


At other times in our lives, we have had to make sudden changes.  Perhaps we had experienced the death of a family member, or the loss of a job, or a sudden serious illness.  We did not know what to do.  We did not know what the future was going to be.  It was very scary.

私たちは人生で思いがけない経験をしなければならない時があります。おそらくそれは家族の死であったり、失業、突然重病になったことかもしれません。どうしてよいのか、また今後どうなるのかわからずとても恐怖を感じたことでしょう。


To all of us, in all these experiences, the Lord says very kindly, “be strong and of good courage”.  The Lord knows exactly what our challenges are.  He knows what we need to learn.  He knows how things will turn out. 

こうした数々の経験を持つ私たちに主は優しく「強く、また雄々しくあれ」と言われています。主は私たちの苦難が何であるかはっきりとご存知です。主は私たちが何を学ぶ必要があるのかご存知です。主は物事がどのように解決するかご存知です。


One of the very first principles we learn in this life is that we must have faith in God.  We cannot see what will happen in the future.  We cannot see how things will work out.  But the Lord knows all those things.  

私たちがこの世で学ぶ最初の原則は神に信仰を持たねばならないということです。私たちは将来何が起こるか見ることはできません。どのように物事が解決するのかわかりません。しかし主はそうしたすべてをご存知なのです。


Our loving Heavenly Father will never leave us alone.  He will guide us and bless us and help us to get through each challenge.  He wants us to learn and to grow.  He wants us to succeed.  He wants us to be worthy to return and live with him again.

私たちの愛する天父は私たちを決して一人にはなさいません。私たちを導き、苦難を乗り越えれるよう助けてくださいます。主は私たちが学び成長することを望んでおられます。主のもとに戻り再び共に暮らすにふさわしくなって欲しいと望んでおられます。


As you face challenges in life, “be strong and be of a good courage”.  Pray for guidance from the Lord.  Pray to be able to make correct decisions.  Listen to the promptings of the Holy Ghost.  

人生で試練に会うとき「強く、また雄々しくありましょう」。主からの導きを求めて祈りましょう。正しい判断ができるよう祈りましょう。聖霊のささやきに耳を傾けましょう。


Just like Joshua, the things we are asked to do may seem overwhelming.  It may seem like there is no way that we can accomplish the task we have been given.  

ヨシュアのように私たちが行うよう頼まれた事柄は手におえないように感じるかもしれません。与えられたことを成就できるはずがないと感じるかもしれません。


That may be true.  But the Lord can do it.  All we have to do is to go forward with faith, trusting in the Lord to help us accomplish the things that we are asked to do.

確かにそうかもしれません。しかし主には出来るのです。私たちがすべきことはただ信仰を持って前進し、与えられた事柄を成就できるよう主が助けてくださると主を信頼することです。


President Hinckley often reminded us to not be fearful.  He often said, “It will all work out”.  There is no need for us to feel stressed or to worry or to be depressed.  It will all work out.  It just takes time.

ヒンクレー大管長はよく恐れてはならないことを私たちに思い起こさせてくださいました。彼はよく「すべてうまくいく」と言われました。ストレスを感じたり心配、落胆したりする必要はないのです。すべてはうまくいくのです。少し時間がかかるだけです。


I know that we, like Joshua, can “be strong and of a good courage”.  I know that the Lord will be with us “whithersoever” we go.  I know that we must have greater faith.  I know that the Lord will bless us and give us the strength necessary to accomplish whatever task is given to us.

ヨシュアのように私たちも「強く、また雄々しくあれる」ことを私は知っています。どこへ行こうと主は私たちとともにおられることを私は知っています。より強い信仰を持つ必要があります。主は私たちを祝福し、与えられた務めが何であっても成し遂げるに必要な強さを与えてくださることを私は知っています。


Let’s “be strong and of good courage” this week.  Let’s not be dismayed or depressed.  The Lord will be with us.

「強く、また雄々しく」今週を過ごしましょう。うろたえたり落胆しないようにしましょう。主は私たちと共におられるのです。
