それでわたしは彼らに、「あなたがたは主に尋ねたのですか」と言った。すると彼らは、『主に尋ねてはいない。主はこんなことを我々に明らかにしてくださらないからだ」と答えた。見よ、わたしは彼らに言った。「どうしてあなたがたは、主の戒めを守ろうとしないのですか。なぜ心をかたくなにして滅びを招こうとするのですか。主が言われたことを覚えていないのですか。主は、「もしあなたがたが心をかたくなにせず、わたしの戒めを熱心に守りながら、答えを与えられると信じて信仰をもってわたしに求めれば、これらのことは必ずあなたがたに明らかにされる」といわれました。ニーファイ第一書１５：８－１１
And I said unto them: Have ye inquired of the Lord? And they said unto me: We have not; for the Lord maketh no such thing known unto us. Behold, I said unto them: How is it that ye do not keep the commandments of the Lord? How is it that ye will perish, because of the hardness of your hearts? Do ye not remember the things which the Lord hath said? If ye will not harden your hearts, and ask me in faith, believing that ye shall receive, with diligence in keeping my commandments, surely these things shall be made known unto you. 1 Nephi 15:8-11
Each day, we all have many decisions to make. Everyday, choices are placed before us and we must decide what to do. Everyone in this world must make many choices every day.
私たちには毎日多くの決断をする機会があります。私たちの前に選択肢が置かれ、何をするか決めねばなりません。誰もが毎日多くの選択をしなければなりません。
Some decisions are easy to make. Some decisions are not.
選択には容易なもの、また容易でないものがあります。
Some decisions, like “which shoes should I wear?” do not have much impact on our lives.
「どの靴を履こうか」と言ったような選択は私たちの人生にあまり影響を与えません。
Some decisions, like “should I go to Church on Sunday” have a great impact on our lives.
「日曜日に教会に行こうか」と言ったような選択は私たちの人生に大きな影響を与えます。
We all want to make correct decisions. We especially want to make correct decisions about important things.
私たちは誰もが正しい選択をしたいと望んでいます。特に大切な事柄においてはそのように望んでいます。
In this scripture, Nephi teaches us how we can make correct choices. He teaches us the simple steps to follow to receive answers to our prayers.
この聖句でニーファイはどうすれば正しい選択ができるのか教えています。彼は祈りの答えが受けれるよう従うべき簡単なステップを教えています。
First of all, we must ask the Lord. Laman and Lemuel failed to take even the first step. They did not even try to get an answer.
まず最初に、主に尋ねることです。レーマンとレムエルは既にその最初のステップで失敗しているのです。彼らは答えを得ようと試すことすらしなかったのです。
Next, we must not “harden our hearts”. Laman and Lemuel hardened their hearts. They did not believe that the Lord would answer their prayers. They did not have any faith.
次に、「心をかたくなに」しないことです。レーマンとレムエルは心をかたくなにしました。彼らは主が祈りに答えられると信じませんでした。まったく信仰がなかったのです。
Faith is the next requirement. We need to have faith that the Lord will give us guidance and help us to understand what the correct decision is. We need to ask with faith. We need to believe that the Lord will hear and answer our prayers.
信仰はその次の必要条件です。主が私たちに導きを下さり、何が正しい選択かわかるよう助けてくださるという信仰が必要です。信仰を持って尋ねる必要があります。主が祈りを聞き答えてくださることを信じる必要があります。
Finally, we must keep the commandments. If we want answers to our prayers, we must show the Lord that we are willing to keep his commandments. We must do our best to live the gospel. We must want to be true followers of Jesus Christ.
最後に、私たちは戒めを守らねばなりません。もし祈りの答えが欲しければ、主の戒めを喜んで守りたいことを示さねばなりません。福音に沿った生活をするよう最善を尽くさねばなりません。イエス・キリストの真の従者でありたいと望まねばなりません。
If we do these things, we will be able to receive answers to our prayers. We will receive guidance from the Lord. We will be able to make correct decisions.
そうするならば、私たちの祈りは答えられるのです。主から導きを受け、正しい選択ができるのです。
Notice that Nephi does not say that the answers will come immediately. He does not say that we will understand what to do as soon as we have finished praying. He simply says “surely these things will be made known unto you”.
ニーファイが答えはすぐにやってくるとは述べていないことに注目してください。彼は祈り終わったらすぐに何をすべきかわかるとは述べていません。ただ「これらのことは必ずあなたがたに明らかにされる」と教えています。
Everything happens in the Lord’s time. Sometimes we learn important lessons as we struggle to receive an answer. Sometimes we need to show our faith by patiently waiting for the answer that we know will come.
すべてのことは主の時に起きます。私たちは時折答えを受ける苦闘の中で大切なレッスンを学びます。私たちは時には必ずやってくる祈りの答えを忍耐強く待つことで私たちの信仰を示す必要があります。
I know that the Lord will answer our prayers if we follow Nephi’s teachings. I know that the Lord will answer our prayers if we pray with faith. I know the Lord will answer our prayers if we keep the commandments. I know that the Lord will answer our prayers.
ニーファイの教えに従えば主は私たちの祈りに答えてくださることを私は知っています。信仰を持って祈れば主は私たちの祈りに答えてくださることを知っています。戒めを守るならば主は私たちの祈りに答えてくださることを知っています。主は私たちの祈りに答えてくださいます。
