それでも、主が深い慈しみを、大いなる驚くべき業の中でわたしに示してくださっているのもかかわらず、わたしの心は、「おお、わたしは何と惨めな人間なのだろう」と叫ぶ。まことに、わたしの心はわたしの肉のために苦悩し、わたしの霊はわたしの罪悪のために嘆く。
ニーファイ第二書４：１７
Nevertheless, notwithstanding the great goodness of the Lord, in showing me his great and marvelous works, my heart exclaimeth: O wretched man that I am! Yea, my heart sorroweth because of my flesh; my soul grieveth because of mine iniquities. 2 Nephi 4:17
This scripture is part of what is sometimes called “Nephi’s Psalm”. There is an important message for us in this short verse.
この聖句は時折り「ニーファイの詩編」と呼ばれるものの中にあります。この短い聖句には私たちにとって大切なメッセージが含まれています。
Nephi was one of the greatest prophets that ever lived on this earth. Without him, Lehi and his family could not have completed their journey. Without him, we would not have the Small Plates of Nephi. Without him, we would not even have the Book of Mormon.
ニーファイはこの地上に住んだ最も偉大な預言者の一人でした。彼がいなければリーハイと彼の家族は旅路を無事終えることはできなかったことでしょう。彼がいなければ私たちもニーファイの小版を手に入れることはできなかったことでしょう。彼がいなければモルモン書も当然手に入れることはできなかったことでしょう。
Yet, even though he had accomplished so many great things for the benefit of his family and for the salvation of all men, he still had times when he did not think he was good enough.
彼は家族の利益と人の救いのために多くの偉業を成し遂げたましたが、彼自身は自分が十分ではないと思う時がありました。
Just like Nephi, we all have doubts about our own personal worthiness. We all have doubts about whether we are going to be able to return and live with our Heavenly Father. We all have doubts about whether we have truly repented of our sins.
ニーファイのように私たちも自分自身のふさわしさに疑問を持つことがあります。天父の元に戻り共に住めるのか疑問を持つことがあります。自分の罪をすべて完全に悔い改めたのか疑問を持つことがあります。
We look at other people and we compare ourselves to them. We see people that seem to have no problems in their lives. We see people that seem to always be happy.
私たちは他の人を見て自分を彼らと比べてしまいます。彼らの人生には何一つ問題がなく、いつも幸せそうに私たちの目には写ります。
And, just like Nephi, we doubt our own worthiness. Like Nephi, our hearts sorroweth because of our flesh. Like Nephi, our souls grieveth because of our iniquities.
そしてニーファイのように私達も自分のふさわしさに疑問を感じます。ニーファイのように私たちの心も肉のために苦悩します。ニーファイのようにわたしたちの霊も自分の罪悪のために嘆きます。
While it is very important to be humble and to recognize and repent of our sins, the Lord does not want us to grieve because of our iniquities. The Lord wants us to repent. He wants us to improve. He wants us to do better. The Lord does not want us to give up hope.
謙遜になり自分の罪を認め、悔い改めることは非常に大切ではありますが、主は私たちに自分の罪悪のために嘆くことは望んでおられません。主は私たちに悔い改めるよう望んでおられます。進歩するよう望んでおられます。より良くなるよう望んでおられます。主は私たちに望みを捨てないよう望んでおられるのです。
That is another one of Satan’s tricks.
それはサタンの企ての一つなのです。
Satan tries to tell us that we are not good enough. He tells us that we have committed so many sins that we can never repent. Satan wants us to give up hope and to stop trying to become better.
サタンは私たちに自分はふさわしくないと囁きかけます。彼は私たちは悔い改めきれない多くの罪を犯していると囁きかけます。サタンは私たちに希望を捨て良くなる努力をやめるよう望んでいるのです。
In the October 2016 General Conference, Elder Cornish of the Seventy gave a powerful talk entitled “Am I Good Enough? Will I Make It?”. In his talk, he teaches the same message that Nephi gave us. Elder Cornish’s message to us was, “Yes, you are good enough. You can make it!”
2016 年秋の総大会で七十人のコーニッシュ長老が「私は十分に善良でしょうか」という力強いお話をされました。私にできるでしょうか？彼はお話の中でニーファイが教えたと同じメッセージを教えられました。コーニッシュ長老のメッセージは「はい、あなたは十分に善良です。あなたはできます」と言うものでした。
Elder Cornish said, “The great news is that if we have sincerely repented, our former sins will not keep us from being exalted.”
コーニッシュ長老は「非常に喜ばしい知らせは，心から悔い改めるなら，かつての罪によって昇栄するのを妨げられることはない」と言われました。
The key thing, Elder Cornish teaches, is that we must keep on trying. We must keep trying to improve. We must keep trying to become better. We must keep trying to do our best.
コーニッシュ長老の教えで大切なことは私たちは努力し続けねばならないということです。進歩するために、より良くなるために、そして最善をつくすために私たちは努力を惜しんではいけないのです。
If we truly do our best, if we keep trying to improve, if we sincerely repent, the Lord will bless us and help us to return to him. We can make it. We will be good enough.
本当に最善を尽くし、進歩するよう努力を惜しまず、そして心から悔い改めるならば主は私たちを祝福し、主のもとに戻れるよう助けて下さいます。私たちは出来ます。私たちは十分に善良です。
This week, let’s make an effort to look up, not down. Let’s make an effort to truly repent of our sins and then “remember them no more”. Let’s not fall for Satan’s trick of discouragement and depression. Instead, let’s look to the Lord and rely on his great mercies and his eternal love.
下ではなく上を見つめるよう努めて今週を過ごしましょう。心から罪を悔い改めことで罪を「二度と思い出さない」ようにしましょう。落胆したり意気消沈するといったサタンの策略に陥らないようにしましょう。その代わり主を見つめ主の偉大な奇跡や永遠の愛に頼って過ごしましょう。
I know we can do this. I know we can be good enough. I know we can make it!
私たちにはそれができることを私は知っています。私たちは十分に善良であることを知っています。私たちは出来ます。
