しかし、もしあなたがたがその木に構わず、養い育てることに心を配らなければ、見よ、それが根付くことはないであろう。そして、太陽の暑さが及んでその木を熱すると、その木はまったく根がないので枯れてしまうであろう。そこであなたがたは、その木を抜いて捨てる。さてこれは、種が良くなかったからでもなければ、実が好ましいものでなかったからでもない。ただ、あなたがたの土地がやせているためである。あなたがたがその木に養いを与えようとしないので、実を得ることができないのである。アルマ書３２：３８－３９
But if ye neglect the tree, and take no thought for its nourishment, behold it will not get any root; and when the heat of the sun cometh and scorcheth it, because it has no root it withers away, and ye pluck it up and cast it out. Now this was not because the seed was not good, neither is it because the fruit thereof would not be desirable; but it is because your ground is barren, and ye will not nourish the tree, therefore ye cannot have the fruit thereof. Alma 32:38-39
When Alma was teaching the Zoramites about faith, he compared faith to a seed. He explained how we obtain faith by first planting the seed. If the seed grows, we know that it was a good seed. We begin to have faith.
アルマがゾーラム人に信仰について教えていたとき、彼は信仰を種に例えました。種を植えることによってどのように信仰が得られるのか説明しています。もし種が育てば私たちはそれが良い種だと知り、信仰が芽生えるのです。
But Alma reminds us that planting the seed is not enough. It takes constant work and effort to keep the seed growing. We have to care for the new plant. We have to nourish it. We have to give it water. If we do these things, the seed will continue to grow into a tree.
しかしアルマは種を植えるだけでは十分ではないと説明しています。種が育ち続けるよう絶え間ない働きと努力が必要なのです。新しい苗木の世話をしなければなりません。栄養を与え、水を与えなければなりません。そうするとその種は樹木へと成長するのです。
Just like the growing tree, our faith grows from a small seed to a fruitful tree. It does not happen quickly. It takes time for the tree to grow. It takes time for our faith to become strong.
木の成長と同じように私たちの信仰も小さな種から実のなる立派な木へと成長します。即座にはそうなりません。木が成長するには時間がかかります。私たちの信仰も時間をかけて強くなるのです。
Alma warns us about what will happen if we do not take care of the tree. He says that when the heat of the sun comes, it will scorch the tree. The “heat of the sun” means the trials that come to us in our lives. If we have not taken good care of the tree, it will die.
アルマはもし木の世話を怠るとどうなるのか私たちに警告しています。太陽の暑さがその木を熱すると枯れてしまいます。「太陽の暑さ」とは人生において経験する試練のことです。よく世話をしない木は死んでしまいます。
This does not mean that the seed was not a good seed. This does not mean that the tree was not going to someday produce good fruit. This means that we did not do our part.
しかしそれは悪い種だったと言う訳ではありません。またその木がいつになっても実をつけないと言うことでもありません。それは私たちがすべきことを怠ったのです。
We all have friends or family members, or maybe even ourselves, who have planted the seed. We have seen them nurture the seed and have watched them increase in faith.
私たちにはその（信仰の）種を植えたことがある友人や家族、もしくは自分自身がいることでしょう。そしてその種に栄養を与え、信仰が強くなるのを見たことがあるでしょう。
But at some point, they began to neglect the tree. They did not nourish it. They did not give it water. When trials came, they were not prepared. Because they did not take care of the tree, it died.
しかし、ある時からその木の手入れをおろそかにし、栄養を与えず、水も与えないようになりました。試練が来る時の準備が彼らにはできていなかったのです。木の手入れをしなかったので死んでしまったのです。
When this happens, some people begin to think that the seed was not good. They begin to think that the gospel is not true. They begin to doubt what they have been taught.
そうなると人はその種は良くなかったと思い始めます。福音は真実ではないと思い始め、教わったことに疑いを持ち始めます。
They do not want to think that it was their own fault the tree died.
彼らは木が死んだ原因が自分の落ち度だとは思いたくありません。
This is what Alma warns us about. The gospel is true. We have been taught the truth. If our faith dies, it is because we did not do the small and simple things to keep the tree healthy.
これがアルマが私たちに警告していることです。福音は確かです。私たちが教わったことは確かです。もし私たちの信仰が死んだなら、それは木が元気であるために些細で簡単なことを行わなかったからです。
How do we care for our own “tree” of faith?
信仰の「木」をどのように面倒を見たら良いのでしょう？
We nurture our tree by saying our prayers each day. We nurture our tree by reading the scriptures. We nurture our tree by attending our Church meetings and serving in our callings. These are all very small and simple things.
毎日お祈りをすることで私たちの木を育てます。聖典を読むことで私たちの木を育てます。教会の集会に出席し、召しを果たすことで私たちの木を育てます。それらはどれも些細で簡単な事ばかりです。
I know that the gospel is true. I know that we have been taught the truth. I know that we must do the small and simple things each day and each week so our faith will remain strong. I know that, if we do these things, we will receive all the “fruit of the tree”.
私は福音が真実だと知っています。私たちが教わった事柄は真実だと知っています。私たちの信仰を強く保つために毎日、毎週その些細で簡単なことを行わねばならないのです。そうするならすべての「木の実」を享受することを私は知っています。
Let’s make sure this week that we do the small and simple things necessary to keep our faith strong. Let’s do our part each day to nourish our faith. Let’s remember that it takes time for the tree to grow and produce the delicious fruit that has been promised.
今週、私たちの信仰を強く保つのに必要な些細で簡単なことをしっかり行いましょう。私たちの信仰に栄養を与えるよう毎日自分がすべきことを行いましょう。木が育つには時間がかかることと美味しい果実が約束されていることを忘れないようにしましょう。
