しかし、これだけは言える。もし自分自身や自分の思い、言葉、行いに注意を払わず、主の戒めを守らず、主の来臨について聞いた事柄を生涯の最後まで信じ続けないならば、あなたがたは滅びるに違いない。おお、人々よ、覚えておきなさい。滅びてはならない。モーサヤ書４：３０
But this much I can tell you, that if you do not watch yourselves, and your thoughts, and your words, and your deeds, and observe the commandments of God, and continue in the faith of what ye have heard concerning the coming of our Lord, even unto the end of your lives, ye must perish. And now, O man, remember, and perish not. Mosiah 4:30
This scripture is taken from king Benjamin’s instructions to his people. King Benjamin called all his people together to give them his final instructions and counsel. These instructions are recorded in the first five chapters of Mosiah.
この聖句はベニヤミン王が民に教えを与えた時のものです。彼は最後の指示と勧告を与えるためにすべての国民を集めました。その教えはモーサヤ書の最初の5章に記録されています。
In this scripture, we are given very specific instructions on what we must do to keep the commandments of God.
この聖句では神の戒めを守るために私たちがなすべき具体的な指示が与えられています。
First, we are told that we must watch our thoughts. Every action we take begins first as a thought. If we have good thoughts, we can make good choices. If we have evil thoughts, we will make bad choices. We must always control our thoughts.
まず、私たちは思いに気をつけるよう言われています。私たちのすべての行動は思いから始まります。良い思いがあれば私たちは良い選択ができます。もし邪悪な思いがあれば私たちは悪い選択をします。私たちの思いを常にコントロールしなければなりません。
Second, we are told that we must watch our words. Our words have the power to bless others or to hurt others. Small and simple words like “Thank you” or “I’m sorry” can often bring peace. Mean words can cause contention and arguments. Criticism and complaints are words that hurt people.
２つ目に、私たちは言葉に気をつけるよう言われています。言葉は人を祝福したり傷つけたりする力を持っています。「ありがとう」とか「ごめんなさい」といったささいで簡単な言葉は平和をもたらします。意地悪な言葉は口論や争いを招き、非難や文句の言葉は人を傷つけるものです。
We must always choose our words carefully. We must always choose words that encourage, strengthen, and bless others. Using proper language and kind words is a sign that we are a follower of Jesus Christ.
私たちは言葉を注意深く選ばねばなりません。人を励まし、強め、祝福する言葉を常に選ばねばなりません。適切な会話や親切な言葉を使うことは、私たちがイエス・キリストの従者であるあらわれなのです。
Third, we are told that we must watch our deeds. This is perhaps the most important thing. While having evil thoughts or saying mean words is bad, it is much worse to actually do bad things. It is by our bad actions that we commit sin. It is by our good actions that we keep the commandments.
３つ目に私たちは行いに気をつけるよう言われています。おそらく一番大切なことかもしれません。邪悪な思いや意地悪な言葉は悪いことですが、実際に悪い行いをすることは更に良くないことです。私たちは悪い行いによって罪を犯します。反対に良い行いによって戒めを守ります。
We are given the option to choose good deeds or bad deeds. We are never forced to do something we do not want to do. It is by choosing the right and by doing good deeds that we show Heavenly Father and Jesus Christ that we love them and want to keep their commandments.
私たちには善い行いも悪い行いも選ぶ選択肢が与えられています。私たちはしたくないことを行うよう強制されることはありません。正しいことを選び、よい行いをすることで私たちは天父とイエス•キリストを愛しており、彼らの戒めを守りたいという気持ちを表すのです。
King Benjamin teaches us that it is very important to remember these things. We must always watch our thoughts and our words and our deeds.
ベニヤミン王はそれを覚えていることはとても大事であると教えています。私たちは常に思いと言葉、行いに気を付けねばなりません。
But that is not all. King Benjamin teaches us that we must “observe the commandments of God” and “continue in the faith”.
しかしそれだけではいけません。ベニヤミン王は私たちに「主の戒めを守り」「信仰を持って続ける」べきだと教えています。
How long do we need to do this? “Even unto the end of your lives”, says king Benjamin. We need to learn to control our thoughts and our words and our deeds. We need to do this every day. We need to do this every day for the rest of our lives.
ではどれ程続けねばならないでしょうか？「生涯の最後まで」とベニヤミン王は述べています。私たちは思いと言葉、行いをコントロールしなければなりません。毎日そうしなければなりません。生涯を通して毎日そうしなければなりません。
The great promise given by king Benjamin is that if we will follow his counsel, we will not “perish”. In this scripture, to “perish” means to be cut off from the presence of the Lord.
ベニヤミン王が述べた偉大な祝福とは、もし彼の勧告に従えば私たちは「滅びる」ことはないと言うものです。この聖句の「滅びる」という意味は主のみ前から断ち切られるということなのです。
Our goal is to be worthy to live once again with our Heavenly Father. If we follow the counsel of king Benjamin, we will be able to accomplish that goal. We will not “perish”.
私たちの目標は天父と共に再び暮らせるようふさわしくなることです。ベニヤミン王の勧告に従えば私たちはその目標に到達することができるでしょう。私たちは「滅びない」のです。
As we go forward this week, let’s remember what king Benjamin taught us. Let’s learn to control our thoughts and our words and our deeds. Let’s “observe the commandments of God” and “continue in the faith” every day of our lives. I know that as we try hard to do this, we will receive strength and guidance from our Heavenly Father. We will be blessed. We will not “perish”.
今週も毎日最善を尽くす時、ベニヤミン王の勧告を忘れないようにしましょう。私たちの思いと言葉、行いをコントロールすることを学びましょう。生涯、毎日「神の戒めを守り」「信仰を持って歩み続け」ましょう。そうするよう努力するなら、天父より力と導きを受けることを知っています。私たちは祝福を受け、「滅びる」ことはないのです。
