そのようにして、主なる神は思いのままに行動することを人に許された。しかし人は、一方に誘われるか他方に誘われるかでなければ、思いのままに行動することはできなたった。

ニーファイ第２書２：１６

Wherefore, the Lord God gave unto man that he should act for himself.  Wherefore, man could not act for himself save it should be that he was enticed by the one or the other.  2 Nephi 2:16


This short scripture comes from the great discourse given by Lehi to Jacob, his youngest son.  In this discourse, Lehi teaches Jacob about the importance of opposition in all things.


この短い聖句は父リーハイが末子のヤコブに説いた教えの一つです。ここでリーハイはヤコブにすべてのものには反対の事が存在すること、そしてその重要性について説いています。


We need to understand this same principle.

私たちもこの同じ原則を理解する必要があります。


We know that before we came to this mortal life, we all lived as spirit children of our Heavenly Father.  While we were there, we were taught about the commandments.  We all accepted the gospel and promised to keep the commandments.  

私たちはこの死すべき世に来る前、みな天父の霊の子供として暮らしていました。その時、戒めについて教わりました。私たちはその福音を受け入れ、戒めを守ることを約束しました。


At some point, we were each given the opportunity to come to this earth.  There are two main goals for us here.  Our first goal was to obtain a physical body.  We each accomplished that goal when we were born.

私たちはこの地上にやがてやってくる機会を受けました。私たちにはここにいる２つの主な目的があります。最初の目的は肉体を受けることでした。私たちは生まれて来た時その目的を達成しました。


The second goal is for us to prove to Heavenly Father that we will keep all of his commandments.  

二つ目の目的は天父のすべての戒を守る事を天父に証明することです。


In order for this to be a fair test, we are not allowed to remember what is was like before we were born.  That was explained to us before we came here.  We understood that requirement.  We were told that we would be taught the gospel while we lived here on earth.  We were told that we would then have the opportunity to choose good or bad.

このテストが公正である為には私たちは生まれる前のことを覚えていてはいけません。ここに来る前に私たちはそのように説明を受けました。私たちは必要条件を理解していました。地上で暮らすとき福音を教えられると告げられました。私たちは善悪を選択する機会も与えられると告げられました。


So our first assignment here is to learn about the commandments.  

ですから私たちが最初にすべきことは戒めについて学ぶことです。


We do this by reading the scriptures, by attending our Church meetings, by listening to the missionaries, by reading the words of the prophets and apostles in the General Conference talks.  We also do this by saying our prayers each day, by talking with Heavenly Father and asking for his help and blessings.

私たちは聖典を読むことや教会の集会に出席すること、宣教師の教えを聞くこと、総大会のお話から預言者や使徒の言葉を読むことでそうすることができます。私たちはまた毎日お祈りし、天父とお話し、助けと祝福をお願いすることでそうすることができます。


Our second assignment here is to keep the commandments.

私たちが二つ目にすべきことは戒めを守ることです。


We do this by making choices.  Every day, we have to make choices.  Sometimes, we make good choices.  Sometime, we make poor choices.  

選択をすることも同じように大切です。毎日私たちは選択をしなければなりません。あるときは良い選択をし、またあるときはあまり良くない選択をしてしまいます。


The important thing is that we have the opportunity to choose.  

重要なことは私たちには選択する機会が与えられているということです。


Without choices, we could not show Heavenly Father that we love him by making good choices.  Without choices, we could not “choose the right”.  Without choices, we could not learn or grow.

選択肢がなくては私たちは良い選択をし天父を愛していることを示すことができません。選択肢がなくては私たちは「正しい選択」などできませんし、学んだり成長することもできません。


Even though we sometimes wish that we did not have to make choices, the opportunity to make choices is very important.  This opportunity is often referred to as “free agency”.  In other words, we are free to choose good things or bad things.

私たちは時として選択などしなくても良ければいいと考えますが、選択するという機会は非常に重要な事なのです。この機会はよく「自由意志」と言われます。言い換えると、私たちは良い選択も悪い選択も自由にできるということです。


It is true that by making bad choices, we risk being cut off from our Heavenly Father.  But without the opportunity to make choices, we could never become like him.  

悪い選択をすることで天父との関係が絶たれる危険があるのは確かです。しかし選択する機会が無くては私たちは天父のようになることは決してありません。


Even though the ability to choose can have bad results, it also provides us with opportunity to learn.  Sometimes, the most important lessons in life come as the result of our making a bad choice and suffering the consequences.  

選択する能力のために悪い選択をすることもありますが私たちに学ぶ機会を与えてくれます。時々人生でもっとも重要なレッスンは間違った選択をし、結果として苦しむ時ではないでしょうか。


As we make choices this week, let’s remember why we are making those choices.  Let’s remember that it is a great blessing to have the opportunity to choose.  Most importantly, let’s always try to choose the right!

今週、選択をする時、私たちが何故そうした選択するのか考えてみましょう。選択する機会は素晴らしい祝福であることを忘れないようにしましょう。そして最も大切なことですが、常に正しい選択をするよう努めましょう。


I know that it is a great blessing to have the opportunity to make choices.  I know that we can choose the right in all things.  

選択をする機会は素晴らしい祝福であることを私は知っています。私たちはあらゆることにおいて正しい選択ができると信じています。
