そして、わたしはまた、押し進んで来るほかの人々を見たが、この人々は進んで来て、鉄の棒の端をつかんだ。そして彼らは、鉄の棒にすがりながら暗黒の霧の中を押し進み、ついに進んで来てその木の実を食べた。
ニーファイ第一書８：２４
And it came to pass that I beheld others pressing forward, and they came forth and caught hold of the end of the rod of iron; and they did press forward through the mist of darkness, clinging to the rod of iron, even until they did come forth and partake of the fruit of the tree. 1 Nephi 8:24
This scripture comes from Nephi’s account of his vision of the Tree of Life. Lehi, Nephi’s father, had seen the Tree of Life in a dream and taught his family about it and its meaning. Nephi believed the words his father taught. He prayed and wanted to see the same things that his father had seen.
この聖句はニーファイの生命の木の示現を記述したものです。ニーファイの父リーハイは夢で生命の木を見ました。リーハイはその事実とその意味を家族に教えました。ニーファイは父の教えたことを信じました。彼は祈り、父が見た同じ示現を見たいと望みました。
Because of his righteousness, the Lord showed him a vision of the things his father had seen. Nephi saw the Tree of Life and the rod of iron and the mists of darkness.
主は彼の正しさの故、父が見たその示現を彼にも示されました。ニーファイは生命の木と鉄の棒、暗黒の霧を見たのです。
There is a great lesson in this scripture for us.
この聖句には私たちにとって大切な教えがあります。
First of all, Nephi says that the people he saw were “pressing forward”. This means that the people wanted to obtain the fruit of the Tree of Life. They wanted to learn. They were taking action to accomplish that goal. They were not just waiting for something to happen. They were “pressing forward”.
まず最初に、ニーファイは彼が見た人々は「押し進んでいた」と述べています。それはその人々が生命の木の実を手に入れたいと願ったという意味です。彼らは学び、目的を達成するために行動を起こそうとしていました。彼らは何かが起こるのをただ待っていたのではありません。彼らは「（前に向かって）押し進んでいた」のです。
Because they were taking action and “pressing forward”, they were able to take hold of the rod of iron. Nephi tells us that the rod of iron represents the commandments of the Lord. In other words, the people who wanted to learn were taught about the commandments of the Lord. They wanted to obey those commandments. This is represented by the symbol of “clinging to the rod”.
彼らは行動を起こし「押し進んでいた」ので鉄の棒を掴んでいることができたのです。ニーファイは鉄の棒は主の戒めを表していると述べています。言い換えれば学びたいと願っていた人々は主の戒めを教えられたのです。彼らはその戒めに従いました。それは「鉄の棒にすがる」ことを意味しています。
As the people went forward, “clinging to the rod”, they encountered mists of darkness. In other words, they had temptations and trials and difficulties. But, because they were “clinging to the rod”, they were able to overcome those problems.
その人々が「鉄の棒にすがり」前に向かって進んでいると暗黒の霧に遭遇しました。言い換えると彼らには誘惑や試練、苦難があったということです。しかし彼らは「鉄の棒にすがって」いたのでそう言った問題を克服することができたのです。
Finally, after passing through the mists of darkness, they were able to partake of the fruit of the Tree of Life. Nephi tells us that the fruit of the Tree of Life is the love of God and is the “most desirable above all” and “the most joyous to the soul” (1 Nephi 11:22-23).
最後に、暗黒の霧を通り抜けると彼らは生命の木の実を食べることができました。ニーファイは生命の木の実は神の愛であり「どんなものよりも好ましく」、「人にとってもっとも喜ばしい」と述べています。(1 Nephi 11:22-23)
So the lesson for us is this. First, we should want to learn about the Lord and his commandments. This is “pressing forward”.
ですから私たちが教ぶべき事は、まず主と主の戒めについて学びたいと願う必要があるということです。これが「押し進む」ことなのです。
Next, we need to learn about the commandments. This is taking “hold of the end of the rod”.
次に戒めを学ぶ必要があります。これが「鉄の棒の端をつかむ」ということです。
Once we start keeping the commandments, we must expect to have temptations, trials, and difficulties. These are the “mists of darkness” that Nephi describes. Temptations and trials come to all of us. This life is a time of testing. No one is exempt from trials and hardships.
ひとたび戒めを守り始めると私たちは誘惑や試練、苦難を経験することを理解していなければなりません。それらはニーファイが述べた「暗黒の霧」です。誘惑や試練は私たちの誰にもやってきます。この世は試しの時期です。誰ひとりとして試練や困苦から免除されることはありません。
But, by “clinging to the rod”, or in other words, by keeping the commandments of the Lord, we will be able to pass through the mists of darkness successfully. We need to pray each day. We need to read the scriptures. We need to attend our Church meetings. We need to serve in our callings. We need to help others. We need to be good examples.
しかし「鉄の棒にすがる」ことで、言い換えれば主の戒めを守る事で私たちは暗黒の霧の中を無事通過できるのです。私たちは毎日祈る必要があります。聖典を読む必要があります。教会の集会に出席し、私たちの召しを果たす必要があります。誰かを助け、良い模範である必要があります。
Nephi does not say that the mists of darkness ended quickly. He only says that those who held on to the rod of iron were able to partake of the fruit of the Tree of Life. This means that we need to endure to the end. We cannot give up before we get to the end.
ニーファイは暗黒の霧がすぐに晴れるとは述べていません。ただ鉄の棒にしっかりしがみついている者は生命の木の実を食べることが出来ると述べています。つまり私たちは最後まで耐え忍ぶ必要があるということです。決して途中で諦めてはいけないのです。
When we have successfully passed through all the mists of darkness, we will receive our reward. We will be able to “partake of the fruit of the tree”. This means that we will receive all the blessings that have been promised to those who keep the commandments.
私たちが無事にすべての暗黒の霧を通過した時、用意された報いを受けるのです。「木の実を食べる」ことができるのです。つまり、戒めを守る者に約束されたすべての祝福を享受することができるのです。
I know that these things are true. I know we will all experience mists of darkness in our own lives. But I know that, as we keep the commandments, we will be able to pass through all those trials and get to the Tree of Life.
私はそれらのことが真実だと知っています。私たちは誰もが暗黒の霧を経験することを知っています。しかし私たちは戒めを守るならあらゆる試練を無事に通過し生命の木にたどり着くことができることを知っています。
