わが子よ、このことをあなたに話したのは、あなたが知恵を得るため、また人が救われるのはただキリストにより、キリストを通じてだけであり、決してほかの方法や手段はないことを、わたしから学べるようにするためである。見よ、キリストは世の命であり光である。見よ、キリストは真理と義の御言葉であられる。アルマ書３８：９
And now, my son, I have told you this that ye may learn wisdom, that ye may learn of me that there is no other way or means whereby man can be saved, only in and through Christ. Behold, he is the life and the light of the world. Behold, he is the word of truth and righteousness. Alma 38:9
In this scripture, Alma teaches his son Shiblon a very important doctrine. This is also something that is important for us to understand.
この聖句の中でアルマは息子シブロンにとても大切な教義を教えています。大切な教えなので私たちもこれを理解する必要があります。
Alma teaches us that our only hope of salvation comes through Jesus Christ. Accepting Jesus Christ as our Savior is the only way we can have hope and joy in this world.
アルマは救いの唯一の希望はイエス・キリストを通じてのみやって来ると教えています。イエス・キリストを救い主として受け入れることはこの世で希望と喜びを得ることができる唯一の方法なのです。
Alma says that Jesus Christ is the light and life of the world.
アルマはイエス・キリストが世の命であり光であると教えています。
What does that mean?
それはどういう意味でしょう？
The teachings of Jesus Christ bring us a knowledge of truth. As we follow Jesus Christ and learn of his commandments, light comes into our lives. That light will guide us through the dark storms of life.
イエス・キリストの教えは私たちに真理の知識をもたらしてくれます。イエス・キリストに従い、その戒めを学ぶとき私たちの人生に光が照らされます。その光は人生で暗黒の嵐の中にあっても私たちを導き守ってくれるのです。
Many people struggle to find meaning in this life. They want to be happy. They want to have peace. They sometimes try many different ways to find happiness.
多くの人がこの世に生きている意味を知ろうともがいています。幸せになり平安が欲しいと思っています。彼らは幸福を見つけようと色々な事を試してみます。
But the only way to have true happiness and peace in our lives is to follow the commandments of our Savior Jesus Christ.
しかし人生において真の幸福と平安を得る唯一の方法は私たちの救い主イエス・キリストの戒めに従う事なのです。
There is no other way. Jesus Christ is the “light of the world”.
それ以外には道はありません。イエス・キリストは「世の光」なのです。
It also means it is only through the Atonement of our Savior Jesus Christ that we can qualify for eternal life. It is only because of the great atoning sacrifice made by Jesus Christ that we can repent of our sins. Without the Atonement of Jesus Christ, no one could be happy ever again.
またそれは、救い主イエス・キリストの贖罪によってのみ私たちは永遠の命を得る資格ができるということです。イエス・キリストの贖いの犠牲によってのみ私たちは罪を悔い改めることが出来るのです。イエス・キリストの贖罪無くして誰一人再び幸福にはなれないのです。
We have all made mistakes. We have all committed sins. The only way we can become clean again and be worthy to return to live with our Heavenly Father is by repenting. Our only hope of eternal life comes through Jesus Christ. Jesus Christ is the “life of the world”.
私たちは誰もが間違いを犯します。罪を誰もが犯しています。再び清くなり天父のもとに戻り、共に住むのに相応しくなる唯一の方法は悔い改めです。永遠の生命への希望はイエス・キリストを通じてのみやってきます。イエス・キリストは「世の命」なのです。
Alma teaches us that the words of Jesus Christ are the words of “truth and righteousness”.
アルマはイエス・キリストの御言葉は「真理と義」の言葉だと教えています。
As we “hold to the iron rod” that Nephi saw, we will be lead to the “tree of life”, whose fruit is most desirable above all. Nephi explains that the iron rod is the word of God, or in other words, the commandments of Jesus Christ.
私たちはニーファイが見た「鉄の棒に捕まって」いれば「命の木」に導かれるのです。その実はどの実より好ましいものなのです。鉄の棒は神の御言葉、言い換えればイエス・キリストの戒めだとニーファイは説明しています。
It is only by holding on to the iron rod, only by keeping the commandments, that we can have peace and happiness in our lives. Even though there will still be trials and hardships, we can endure those trials more easily if we are faithful followers of Jesus Christ.
私たちがこの世で平安と幸福を得るには鉄の棒にしっかりつかまっていること、つまり戒めを守ること意外にないのです。それでも試練や苦難はあります。けれども忠実なイエス・キリストの従者であればそれらの試練は耐えやすいものとなります。
I know that these things are true. I know that, as we accept Jesus Christ as our Savior, and as we follow his commandments, we will find peace in this life.
これらは真実です。イエス・キリストを私たちの救い主と受け入れるなら、そしてその戒めに従うなら私たちは生活の中で平安を見出すことでしょう。
Let’s make an effort this week to do better. Let’s try harder to keep the commandments. Let’s decide to follow Jesus Christ in all that we do.
今週、更に前進できるよう努力しましょう。戒めを守るようもっと頑張りましょう。私たちの行なう全てにおいてイエス・キリストに従うと決意しましょう。
