ユダヤ人は、これらのことを聞いて父に腹を立てた。まことに、彼らが昔の預言者に腹を立てたのと同様である。彼らは預言者を追い出し、石を投げつけ、殺してしまった。そして、今また彼らは父の命をねらい、殺してしまおうとしたのである。しかし見よ、主の深い憐みは、信仰がある為に主から選ばれた全ての者のうえに及び、この人たちを強くして自らを解放する力さえ与えることを、わたしニーファイはあなたがたに示そう。ニーファイ第一書１

And when the Jews heard these things they were angry with him; yea, even as with the prophets of old, whom they had cast out, and stoned, and slain; and they also sought his life, that they might take it away.  But behold, I, Nephi, will show unto you that the tender mercies of the Lord are over all those whom he hath chosen, because of their faith, to make them mighty, even unto the power of deliverance. 1 Nephi 1:20

At the very beginning of his record, Nephi writes about his father, Lehi.  Nephi records that his father testified to the people at Jerusalem and told them about the things the Lord has shown to him in a vision.  He warned the people that they needed to repent or that they would be destroyed.

記録のはじめにニーファイは父リーハイについて記述しています。彼の父はエルサレムの人々に証し、主が示現で知らせてくれた事柄を彼らの教え、悔い改めなさい、さもないと滅びますよと人々に警告したことをニーファイは記録しています。

The people who heard Lehi testify were angry with him. They did not want to be told that they were wicked.  They did not want to repent. They did not want to know about the things of the Lord.

リーハイの証を聞いた人々は怒りました。彼らは邪悪だなどと言われたくなかったのです。悔い改めもしたくありませんでした。彼らは主や主の教え、計画について知したいとも思いませんでした。

Instead of listening to Lehi’s message and repenting, they tried to kill Lehi.  We are not told in Nephi’s record what the people actually did. Did they throw stones at Lehi?  Did they attack his house? Did they try to hurt his family? 

リーハイのメッセージを聞き、悔い改めためるどころか、彼らはリーハイを殺そうとしました。ニーファイの版からは実際彼らがどうしたのかは分かりません。リーハイに石を投げつけたのでしょうか？彼の家を襲ったのでしょうか？彼の家族を傷つけたのでしょうか？

We don’t know what they did, but we do know that they were very angry and wanted to kill Lehi.  In his record, whenever Nephi wants to describe wicked people, he always uses the phrase “they were like the Jews in Jerusalem”.  He even uses these words about Laman and Lemuel, when they want to kill both Lehi and Nephi.

私たちは彼らが何をしたのかはわかりません。しかし彼らが激怒しリーハイを殺害したかったことは分かっています。彼の記録にはニーファイが邪悪な人々を表現するときはいつも「彼らはエルサレムのユダヤ人のようだ」という言い回しを使っています。彼はレーマンやレムエルについても彼らがリーハイとニーファイの二人を殺したいと思っていた時その表現を使っています。

But the Lord always protects his prophets.  Both Lehi and Nephi were protected by the Lord.  They were able to finish the work the Lord had given to them.    Nephi uses the words “tender mercies” of the Lord to describe this protection.

しかし主は常に預言者を守ります。リーハイもニーファイも主によって守られました。彼らは主から与えられた業を成し遂げることが出来ました。ニーファイはこの見守りを主の「深い憐れみ」と言う言葉を使っています。

These “tender mercies” are not limited just to the Lord’s prophets.  The Lord gives these “tender mercies” to everyone who has faith in the Lord and who obeys his commandments.

その「深い憐れみ」は主の預言者のみに与えられるものではありません。主はその「深い憐れみ」を主に信仰を持ち、戒めを守るものなら誰にでも与えてくださいます。

We have all experienced “tender mercies” in our lives.  Many times, we do not recognize the tender mercies until later.  

私たちは皆生きる中で「深い憐れみ」を味わっています。多くの場合、私たちは後になるまでその深い憐れみに気が付きません。

Maybe we are protected from harm or danger.  Maybe we are guided to make a correct decision.  Maybe we are given spiritual insight about how to help a family member or friend.

それは私たちが怪我や危険から守られていることかもしれません。正しい選択をするよう導かれているのかもしれません。もしかして家族や友人を助けるため霊的な洞察力を与えられることかもしれません。

All of these things are “tender mercies” from the Lord.  

これら全ての事は主からの「深い憐れみ」なのです。

The Lord wants to give us these “tender mercies”.  Just as a parent wants to give “tender mercies” to their own child, so Heavenly Father wants to bless us with “tender mercies”. 

主は私たちにその「深い憐れみ」をくださろうとしています。丁度両親が子供に「深い憐れみ」を与えたいように天父も私たちを「深い憐み」をもって祝福したいと望んでおられます。

All he asks is that we have faith in him and obey his commandments.  We don’t have to do some great work. We don’t have to have lots of money.  We don’t have to be someone famous. We just need to keep the commandments.

主が望んでおられるのはただ主に信仰を持ち、戒めを守ることだけです。何か特別大きなことをする必要はありません。沢山のお金を持ったり、有名人になったりする必要はありません。ただ戒めを守るだけでいいのです。

As we go through this next week, let’s watch for the “tender mercies” that the Lord blesses us with.  Let’s recognize those “tender mercies” as more than just mere coincidences. Let’s remember to thank the Lord for the “tender mercies” that we receive.  

主が私たちを祝福してくださる「深い憐れみ」を見落とすことなく今週を過ごしましょう。ただの偶然ではなく主の「深い憐れみ」に気が付きますように。私たちが受ける「深い憐れみ」を主に感謝することを忘れないようにしましょう。
