あの奇妙な建物の中に入った人々の数は非常に多かった。彼らはその建物に入ると、わたしやほかにその実を食べていた人々を指差してあざけり笑った。しかしわたしたちは、彼らのことを気に留めなかった。 ニーファイ第一章８：３３
And there was a great multitude that did enter into that strange building. And after they did enter into that building they did point the finger of scorn at me and those that were partaking of the fruit also; but we heeded them not. 1 Nephi 8:33
In one of the first great events in the Book of Mormon is Lehi’s vision of the Tree of Life. In this vision, the prophet Lehi was shown a tree whose fruit “was desirable to make one happy”. Lehi was told that the tree of life was a representation of the love of God.
モルモン書には素晴らしい出来事が載っていますがこのリーハイの命の木の示現もその一つです。この示現で預言者リーハイはその実が「人を幸せにする好しいものであった」ことを見、その命の木は神の愛を象徴していると教わりました。
In his vision, Lehi saw many other things, including a straight and narrow path that led to the tree, a rod of iron, a river of water, and a large and spacious building.
この示現でリーハイはその木に続く真っすぐで狭い道や鉄の棒、水の流れている川、大きく広々とした建物など多くのものを見ました。
The large and spacious building was “filled with people, both old and young, both male and female; and their manner of dress was exceedingly fine”.
その大きく広々とした建物は「老若男女を問わず人々でいっぱいであり、この人々の衣服の装いは非常に華やか」でした。
Nephi was taught that the large and spacious building represented the pride of the world.
ニーファイはその大きく広々とした建物は世の高慢であると教わりました。
On the surface, it looks like the larger and spacious building was a nice place to be. The people in the building seemed to be having a good time. They had nice clothes. They were popular. They probably had good food to eat. There was a large path that led to the building. It was easy to get to.
表面的にはその大きく広々とした建物は素敵なところのようです。建物にいる人々は楽しく過ごしているようです。素敵な着物を着て、人気があるようでした。おそらく美味しい食べ物を食べていたことでしょう。その建物まで大きな道が続いており、そこにたどり着くのは容易なことでした。
On the other hand, the tree of life was at the end of a straight and narrow path. There was a mist of darkness that made it difficult to see the correct path. It was only by holding on to the rod of iron that people were able to reach the tree of life. It was not easy to get to.
一方、命の木は真っすぐで狭い道の終点でした。黒い霧がそこまでの道を覆い隠して見にくくしていました。人々がその木にたどり着くには鉄の棒にしがみついている必要がありました。たどり着くのは容易ではありませんでした。
Unfortunately, even some of those people who had stayed on the straight and narrow path, had reached the tree of life, and had partaken of it, did not endure to the end. After they had partaken of the fruit of the tree of life, they saw the people in the large and spacious building mocking them. Because of this, some of the people who had partaken of the fruit of the tree were ashamed. They “fell away into forbidden paths and were lost”.
残念ながら真っすぐで狭い道にとどまり命の木にたどり着き、その実を食べた何人かの人でさえ最後まで耐え忍びませんでした。彼らは命の木の実を食べた後、大きな広々とした建物にいた人々からあざ笑われて恥ずかしく感じていました。そして彼らは「禁じられた道へと迷い込んでしまいました」。
However, there were also those who remained faithful. Even though the popular people were mocking them, they remained faithful and true. Speaking of the mocking of those people, Nephi simply says, “we heeded them not”.
しかし常に忠実でいた者もいました。大衆が彼らをあざ笑っても真理に忠実でいました。その人々をあざ笑うというとニーファイはただ「彼らのことを気に留めなかった」と述べています。
Are we sometimes mocked because of our beliefs? Are we sometimes mocked because of our opinions? Are we sometimes mocked because of the things that we do not participate in?
私たちの信条のために、あざ笑われることがありませんか？私たちの見解のために、あなたもあざ笑われることがありませんか？私たちが参加しないことがあるために、あざ笑われることがありませんか？
We all have experienced the mocking of the world. One of Satan’s tricks is to make us feel ashamed for keeping the commandments.
私たちはだれもが世の嘲笑を受けた経験があることでしょう。サタンのひとつの策略は戒めを守ることを恥ずかしいと思わせることです。
As followers of Jesus Christ, there will be times when we will be mocked because of our beliefs. There will be times when we will be mocked because of our opinions. There are times when we will be mocked because of the things we will not do.
イエス・キリストの従者として私たちも信じることのためにあざ笑われる時もあるでしょう。私たちの見解のためにあざ笑われる時もあるでしょう。私たちの行うことのためにあざ笑われる時もあるでしょう。
When those times come, we need to remember to “heed them not”. We need to remember to hold on to the iron rod always. We need to remember this teaching of the prophet Lehi.
その様な時がやって来たときは「彼らのことを気に留めない」ことを忘れないようにしましょう。常に鉄の棒を握りしめ、預言者リーハイの教えを覚えていましょう。
As we go through this next week, let’s remember to hold on to the iron rod. Let’s remember to not give in to peer pressure. Let’s remember to ignore those who mock us.
鉄の棒を握りしめることを忘れないようこの新しい週を過ごしましょう。周りの圧力に屈しないよう、私たちをあざ笑うものを気にしないことを心がけていましょう。
