死者にさえ福音が宣べ伝えられたのは、彼らは肉においては人間として裁きを受けるが、霊においては神のように生きるためである。ペテロの第一の手紙第四章六節。

For for this cause was the gospel preached also to them that are dead, that they might be judged according to men in the flesh, but live according to God in the spirit.  1 Peter 4:6

This important scripture was given by the Apostle Peter in his first letter to the Church.  In this scripture, he teaches the early Church members about the Plan of Salvation.

この重要な聖句は使徒パウロが教会に宛てた最初の手紙に書かれたものです。この聖句は彼が救いの計画について初期の教会で教えたものです。

It is evident from his comments that the members of the Church understood that there was a great missionary effort going on among the spirits of the dead.

彼のコメントで明らかなように死者の霊の間で大いなる伝道活動が熱心に行われていることを教会の会員は理解していました。

Unfortunately, that important doctrine was lost during the apostasy.  The world does not understand that the gospel is being preached to those spirits who did not get to hear the gospel while they lived on the earth.

残念ながら大切な教義が背教を通して失われました。現代の人々は生きている間に福音を聞く機会がなかった人々の霊に福音が延べ伝えられることを理解していません。

This is a very important doctrine.  It teaches us that Heavenly Father loves all of his children, no matter when they lived on the earth.  He loves all of his children and wants all of them to have an equal opportunity.

これはとても大切な教義です。いつこの地上で生きていたかにかかわらず天父は全ての子供たちを愛しておられることを教えています。神は全ての子供たちを愛しておられ平等の機会を与えたいと望んでおられます。

Because the Christian world has forgotten this teaching, they have a big doctrinal problem.  They all agree that baptism is necessary. But they cannot offer any hope to someone who did not live in a time when baptism was available.  This in turn means that they cannot explain how Heavenly Father can love all his children equally.

キリスト教の世界ではこの教義を忘れているので彼らは教義的な大きな問題を抱えています。彼らは誰もがバプテスマの必要性には合意しています。しかし彼らはバプテスマが無い時代に生きていた人の誰にも希望を与えることは出来ません。これはつまり彼らは天父がどれ程、神のすべての子供たちを平等に愛しておられるのか説明することが出来無いということです。

With the restoration of the gospel and priesthood authority through the Prophet Joseph Smith, we know that Heavenly Father does love all his children equally.  We know that he has provided a way for everyone to have an equal chance to hear the gospel. 

ジョセフ・スミスにより回復された福音と神権の権能によって、私たちは天父が全ての子供を平等に愛しておられることを知っています。私たちは神が誰でも平等に福音を聞く方法を用意してくださってることを知っています。

Those who did not live on the earth at a time when the gospel was available have an opportunity to hear the gospel in the spirit world.  President Joseph F. Smith was shown in vision the great missionary work that is happening in the spirit world (Doctrine & Covenants Section 138).

福音が無かった時代に住んでいたものにも霊界で福音を聞く機会があるのです。ジョセフ・Ｆ・スミス大管長は素晴らしい伝道の業が霊界で行われているのを啓示で見ました。（教義と聖約138 章）

In the spirit world, millions and millions of Heavenly Father’s children are being taught the gospel.  Millions and millions of them have accepted the gospel, have repented of their sins, and want to be baptized.  Millions and millions of them are waiting for us to help them.

霊界では数えきれない多くの天父の子供たちに福音が教えられています。数えきれない多くが者が福音を受け入れて罪を悔い改め、バプテスマを受けたいと願っています。数えきれない多くの者が私たちの助けを待っているのです。

Without our help, they cannot receive the important ordinances.  Baptism is an ordinance that belongs to this world. In order to be baptized, you must have a physical body.  Those spirits waiting in the spirit world do not have a body.

私たちの助け無しに彼らは大切な儀式を受けることが出来ません。バプテスマはこの世でないと受けれない儀式なのです。バプテスマを受けるには肉体が無ければなりませんし、霊界で待っている霊たちは肉体を持っていません。

So what is our duty?

では私たちは何をすべきでしょう？

Our duty is two-fold.

私たちにはすべき大切なことが二つあります。

First, we need to be diligent in searching out our own ancestors.  We need to be diligent in finding those of our own families who have left this earth and are waiting in the spirit world.  We need to do all that we can to find them.

まず私たちの先祖を熱心に探し出さねばなりません。既にこの世を去り霊界で待っている自分たちの家族を熱心に探さねばなりません。最善を尽くして彼らを探さねばなりません。

Second, we need to get those names to the Temple.  If we live close to a Temple, we can do the work ourselves.  If we do not live close to a Temple, we can submit the names of those ancestors to the Temple file so someone can do the work for them.

次に彼らの名前を神殿に提出する必要があります。神殿の近くに住んでいれば自分たちで身代わりの儀式を執りおこなうことが出来ます。近くに住んでいなければ先祖の名前を神殿に提出し他の誰かに身代わりの儀式を執り行ってもらうことが出来ます。

These people are real. They lived on earth, just as we are now living.  They struggled, suffered hardships and trials, and made it possible for us to live here now.  As their descendants, as their family members, we must do our duty to them.

彼らは確かに霊界にいて待っています。私たちが現在生きているように彼らもかつてこの地上で生きていました。彼らが問題と戦い、苦難や試練に耐えてくれたおかげで私たちは今こうして生きているのです。彼らの子孫として、家族の一員として私たちは彼らに恩返しをしなければなりません。

Let’s remember those who made it possible for us to live here.  Let’s remember that they cannot enjoy the blessings of the gospel without our efforts.  Let’s remember that they are waiting for us to do our duty. 

私たちが今ここにこうして生きておられることを可能にしてくれた彼らの事を忘れないようにしましょう。彼らは私たちの努力なしに福音の祝福を楽しむことが出来ないことを覚えていましょう。彼らは私たちが義務を果たすのを待っていることを忘れないようにしましょう。

Let’s be diligent in working to provide the ordinances of salvation to all of our ancestors.

私たちの先祖すべての救いの儀式を執り行うよう熱心に働きましょう。
