見よ、わたしは異邦人に彼らの弱さを示し、また信仰と希望と慈愛が彼らをわたしのもとに、すなわち、あらゆる義の源に導くことを彼らに示そう。エテル書１２：２８

Behold, I will show unto the Gentiles their weakness, and I will show unto them that faith, hope and charity bringeth unto me — the fountain of all righteousness.  Ether 12:28

This scripture was written by Moroni, toward the end of his translation of the 24 gold plates that were found by the people of king Limhi.  These 24 gold plates became the Book of Ether.

この聖句はモロナイがリムハイ王の民によって見つかった24 枚の金版の翻訳が終わり近づいたころに書かれました。この24 枚の金版は後にエテル書となりました。

As Moroni writes, he worries that he is not good enough for the calling that the Lord has given him.  He tells the Lord that people will “mock at these things”. Even though he was called as a prophet of God, and even though he had been given a great assignment to help complete what would become The Book of Mormon, he still felt inadequate for the assignment.

モロナイは主から与えられた召しを果たすにはふさわしくないのではといった不安な気持ちを述べています。彼は民が「これらの事をあざ笑う」だろうと主に言いました。彼は神に召された預言者ではあり、後にモルモン書となる物を完成させるという重大な割り当てを受けていたにもかかわらず、この割り当てには相応しくないと感じていたのです。

Moroni says that when he speaks, he speaks with the power of the Holy Ghost.  When he speaks, he can say great things, because of the influence of the Holy Ghost.  

モロナイは話す時には聖霊の力で話すと言ってます。話す時には聖霊の影響力を受けて偉大なことを話せるとも言ってます。

But when he writes, he struggles to find the correct words to use.  He struggles to find the correct grammar to use. He struggles to find the proper way to explain the things that the Holy Ghost has taught him.

しかし書く時は、正しい言葉を見つけるのに苦労し、正しい文法を見つけるのにも、聖霊が教えてくれたことを適切に説明する方法を見つけるのにも苦労しています。

He is worried that the Gentiles will “mock at his words”.

彼は異邦人が「彼の言葉をあざ笑う」だろうと心配しています。

And yet, because Moroni was faithful, because Moroni was diligent, because Moroni did his best to fulfill the assignment given to him, we have the Book of Ether and the Book of Moroni in The Book of Mormon today.  Great truths are taught in those books.

しかし、モロナイは従順で勤勉、与えられた割り当てを最善を尽くしたので、今日私たちにはモルモン書の中のエテル書とモロナイ書があるのです。そして偉大な真理がこれらの書で教えられています。

Are we sometimes like Moroni?

私たちもモロナイのような時がありませんか？

Do we sometimes think that we are not capable of completing the assignments the Lord gives to us?  Do we sometimes think that other people would do a much better job if they were given our assignment?  Do we sometimes think that we are useless or imperfect servants?

私たちも時々主から与えられた割り当てを達成する能力がないと考えることがありませんか？　自分に与えられた割り当ては他の人ならもっと良く果たせるのではと考えることがありませんか？自分が役に立たない不完全な僕だと考えたりしませんか？

Of course we do!

もちろんあるでしょう。

We all have thoughts like that, just like Moroni did. We all feel like imperfect servants at times.  We all feel inadequate sometimes. We all feel small and insignificant at times.

誰でもモロナイのようなそんな気持ちを持つことがあるでしょう。誰もが時々自分が不完全な僕だと感じることでしょう。適性を欠いると感じたり、小さくて重要な存在ではないと感じることがあるでしょう。

What do we do when we have those thoughts?

そんな気持ちを持つときは何をしたらよいでしょう？

We need to remember what the Lord taught Moroni.  The Lord taught Moroni that “fools shall mock, but they shall mourn”.  In other words, those who did not believe in the words that Moroni was told to write would be unhappy someday.  

主がモロナイに教えられた事を忘れてはいけません。主はモロナイに「愚か者はあざけるが、後に嘆き悲しむ」と教えられました。言い換えればモロナイが書き留めるように言われた言葉を信じない者はいずれ不幸になるのです。

Those who think they are too smart, or too rich, or too famous, or too important to listen to the words of a humble servant of God, will mourn.  It doesn’t matter whether that humble servant of the Lord was a prophet like Moroni, or a missionary, or a faithful Relief Society sister, or a Primary class teacher, or any other follower of Jesus Christ.

自分は賢い、金持ちで有名、重要人物であるので謙遜な僕の言葉を聞く必要など無いと考える者はいずれ嘆き悲しむのです。その謙遜な主の僕がモロナイのような預言者であるか、宣教師であるか、忠実な扶助協会の姉妹であるか、初等協会の教師であるか、それともイエス・キリストに従う誰であっても関係ありません。

The Lord tells us that we all have weaknesses.  We are told that we are given those weaknesses to help us develop greater faith.  As we humble ourselves and have faith in our Savior Jesus Christ, the Lord has promised us that he will make the “weak things become strong”.  

主は誰もが弱点を持っていると言われてます。私たちはより強い信仰を育むために弱点が与えられていると教えられています。謙遜になり救い主イエス・キリストに信仰を持つならば主は私たちの弱さを強さに変えると約束されています。

We just need to do our best with the talents that the Lord has given us.  He will do the rest.

私たちは主が与えてくださった才能を使い最善を尽くすだけでよいのです。後は主が行ってくださいます。

As we go through this new week, let’s remember who it is that we serve.  Let’s remember that, even though we may feel that we are weak and inadequate, the Lord will “make the weak things strong”.  Let’s do our very best at whatever assignment we are given.

私たちが仕えるのは誰なのか忘れないように今週も過ごしましょう。私たちは弱く適任ではないと感じても主が「弱さを強さに変えてくださる」ことを忘れないようにしましょう。与えられた割り当てが何であろうと最善を尽くしましょう。
