見よ、あなたの勢力と思いと力を尽くしてわたしの戒めを守ることが、あなたのなすべきことである。教義と聖約１１：２０
Behold, this is your work, to keep my commandments, yea, with all your might, mind and strength. Doctrine & Covenants 11:20
This interesting scripture was given by the Prophet Joseph Smith to his older brother, Hyrum.
この興味深い聖句は預言者ジョセフ・スミスを通して兄のハイラムに与えられました。
We are all familiar with the scripture in Moses 1:39, in which the Lord tells us what his work is. His work is to bring to pass the immortality and eternal life of man.
モーセの書 1:39 は私たちの誰もがよく知っている聖句ですが、主の業が何であるか私たちに述べておられます。主の業とは人の不死不滅と永遠の命をもたらすことです。
This scripture, from the Doctrine & Covenants, tell us what our work is. Our work is to keep the commandments.
教義と聖約のこの聖句は私たちのなすべきことを教えています。それは戒めを守ることです。
This is a very simple instruction. It does not take years of study to understand it. It does not require advanced education to understand it. It does not take great spiritual insight to understand it.
これはとても分かりやすい教えですし理解するのに長い時間もかかりません。理解するのに高等教育を必要ともしませんし特別な霊的洞察力も必要としません。
Like many of the most basic principles of the gospel, this teaching is given to us in a way that even a small child can understand it.
多くの他の福音の原則と同じように、この教えは小さな子供でも理解できるような形で教えられています。
There are no personal opinions. There are no conditions or exceptions. There are no gray areas.
個人的見解や条件、例外もありません。あいまいなところもありません。
We are plainly told, in very simple language, that our work here on earth is to keep the commandments of God.
簡単明白な言葉によってこの地上で私たちのなすべきことが神様の戒めを守ることだと述べられています。
How are we to do that
それをどのように行うべきでしょうか？
We are to keep the commandments with all our “might, mind and strength”.
私たちは「勢力と思いと力を尽くして」戒めを守る必要があります。
It is clear from this that it will require effort on our part. It is clear that we must work hard. It is clear that this must be our primary goal in life.
私たちが行うべきことには努力が要求されることはこれから明らかです。熱心に働かねばならないことも明らかです。そして、それは私たちの人生で最も大切な目標でもあります。
What does it mean to keep the commandments with all our might?
勢力を尽くして戒めを守るとはどういうことでしょう？
It means we must keep the commandments even when it is hard to do so. In fact, it is most important to keep the commandments when it is hard to do so. Anyone can keep the commandments when it is easy. To show our love for the Lord and our desire to follow him, it is important to keep the commandments when it is hard to do so.
それは難しいと感じるときでも戒めを守らねばならないということです。事実、難しいと感じるときに戒めを守ることが最も大切なのです。簡単に感じるときは誰でも戒めを守れます。主に私たちの愛と主に従いたい望みを示すには難しいと感じるときに戒めを守ることが大切です。
What does it mean to keep the commandments with all our mind?
It means we should always have our thoughts centered on our Savior. It means we should “let charity garnish our thoughts unceasingly”, as we are taught in Doctrine & Covenants, Section 121, verse 45. It means our thoughts should be pure and holy.
思いを尽くして戒めを守るとはどういうことでしょう？それは自分の思いを救い主を中心としたものにするということです。教義と聖約121章45節で教えられているように私たちは「慈愛で満みたされる」ようにしなければなりません。私たちの思いが純粋で神聖でなければならないのです。
What does it mean to keep the commandments with all our strength?
力を尽くして戒めを守るとはどういうことでしょう？
It means it will sometimes require great effort to keep the commandments. It means we need to use our “spiritual muscles” to overcome temptations. It means we will have to grow and learn as we do our best to keep the commandments.
それは時には戒めを守るために相当な努力を要するということです。私たちは誘惑に打ち勝つために「霊の筋肉」を使う必要があります。戒めを守るために最善を尽くすとき、学び成長しなければならないということです。
As we go through this week, let’s remember what our work is here on earth. Let’s remember to do our best to keep the commandments always. Let’s do our best to show the Lord that we love him and want to follow him.
この地上で私たちのなすべきことをよく覚えて今週を過ごしましょう。戒めを守るよう常に最善を尽くすことを忘れないようにしましょう。主を愛し主に従いたい気持ちを主に示すよう最善を尽くしましょう。
