しかし主はサムエルに言われた、「顔かたちや身のたけを見てははらない。わたしはすでにその人を捨てた。わたしが見るところは人とは異なる。人は外の顔かたちを見る、主は心を見る」。サムエル記上１６：７
But the Lord said unto Samuel, Look not upon his countenance, or on the height of his stature; because I have refused him: for the Lord seeth not as man seeth; for man looketh on the outward appearance, but the Lord looketh on the heart. 1 Samuel 16:7
Samuel was a prophet in ancient Israel. He had anointed Saul to be the king of Israel. But after only a short time, Saul refused to follow the counsel of the Lord. Because Saul did not do what the Lord had told him to do, the Lord to Samuel to find a new king.
サムエルは古代イスラエルの預言者でした。彼はサウルをイスラエルの王として聖別しました。しかしあまり時が経たないのに、サウルは主の勧告に従うことを拒否しました。サウルは主が行うよう言われたことをしなかったので、主はサムエルに新しい王を見つけるように言われたのです。
Samuel was sent by the Lord to visit the family of a man named Jesse. Jesse was the grandson of Ruth and the father of David. The Lord told Samuel that he would find the man he should anoint as the new king in the family of Jesse.
サムエルはエッサイという名の男の家族を訪れるように主によって送られました。エッサイはルツの孫息子でダビデの父でした。主はサムエルにエッサイの家族の中で新しい王に聖別されるべき人を見つけるよう言われました。
When Samuel arrived at the home of Jesse, the first son of Jesse, whose name was Eliab, was brought before Samuel. Eliab was a large and strong man. When Samuel first saw Eliab, Samuel thought that this was the man who should be the new king.
サムエルがエッサイの家に着いた時エリアブという名のエッサイの長男がサムエルより先に出迎えてくれました。エリアブは大きく頑強な男でした。サムエルが初めてエリアブを見た時、彼こそ新しい王になるべき人だと思いました。
But the Lord gave Samuel the instructions found in this scripture. The Lord said that, even though Eliab looked like a strong and good man, he was not the man that the Lord had chosen.
しかし主はサムエルにこの聖句にある指示を与えました。主はエリアブがたとえ強く良い人に見えても主が選んだ者ではないと言われました。
Jesse then brought six more of his sons to Samuel. But each time, Samuel said, “The Lord has not chosen him”. Samuel must have wondered why he had been sent to Jesse’s home, since the Lord had not chosen any of Jesse’s sons to be the next king.
エッサイは更に六人の息子をサムエルの前に連れてきました。しかしサムエルはその誰も「主が選ばれた者でない」と言いました。サムエルは何故、彼はエッサイの家に使わされたのかと不思議に思ったはずです、なぜなら主はエッサイのどの息子も次の王に選ばれなかったからです。
Finally, Samuel asked Jesse if he had any other sons. Jesse said that his youngest son, David, was out in the field watching the sheep. Samuel told Jesse to bring David.
最後にサムエルはエッサイに他に息子がいますかと尋ねました。エッサイは末っ子のダビデがいます、今、羊の世話をしていますと答えました。サムエルはエッサイにダビデを連れてくるよう言いました。
As soon as Samuel saw David, the Lord confirmed that this was the man who would be the new king.
サムエルはダビデを見るなり主は彼がまさに次の王になる者だと認められました。
The new king was not to be the oldest, or the strongest, or the tallest, or the best looking. The new king was to be the youngest.
新しい王は長子であったり、最も強かったり、最も身の丈が高い必要はなかったのです。新しい王は最も若い者だったのです。
The Lord taught Samuel that men look on the outward appearance of a man, but the Lord looks on the heart of a man.
主はサムエルに人は外の顔かたちを見るが主は心を見ると言われました。
As we look at those around us, are we like Samuel? Do we look on the outward appearance of a person and make judgements about them? Do we think someone is a good person, or a bad person, just because of the way they dress? Or whether they look pretty? Or whether they seem popular?
私たちもサムエルのように周りの人を見ていませんか？外の顔かたちを見てその人を評価していませんか？その人の服装を見たり、美しいとか人気があるとか言った理由でその人がよい人とか悪い人だと判断していませんか？
What would Samuel think of us if we had been brought before him? Would he judge us by the clothes that we wear, or how tall we are, or what dress size we wear, or how handsome we are?
あなたがもしサムエルの前に引き出されたなら彼はあなたをどう思うでしょう？彼はあなたを着ている服装や身の丈、服のサイズ、どれ程容姿が良いかと言った理由で評価するでしょうか？
Everyone on earth is a beloved son or daughter of our Heavenly Father. Everyone on earth is our brother or sister. Everyone on earth deserves our respect.
地上の誰もが天父の愛する息子や娘なのです。誰もが私たちの兄弟姉妹なのです。誰もが大切に扱われるべきなのです。
Let’s remember, as we go through this next week, to judge not by the outward appearance of a person, but by what is in their heart. Since we cannot see what is in their heart, we should not make any judgement. Let’s treat each person we meet as we want to be treated.
人を外見で判断せず、その人の心を見ることを忘れないように新しく始まる週を過ごしましょう。私たちには人の心は見えません。ですから決して批判したりしないようにしましょう。出会うすべての人には私たち自身が扱ってほしいように接しましょう。
