わたしは、ある賢明な目的のためにこのようにする。わたしは内にある主の御霊の働きによって、わたしにそのようなささやきがあるからである。わたしはすべてのことを知っているわけでわないが、主は将来起こることをすべて御存じでる。したがって主は、御自分の御心どおりに行うように、わたしに働きかけられるのである。モルモンの言葉１：７

And I do this for a wise purpose; for thus it whispereth me, according to the workings of the Spirit of the Lord which is in me.  And now, I do not know all things; but the Lord knoweth all things which are to come; wherefore, he worketh in me to do according to his will.  Words of Mormon 1:7

This scripture was written by Mormon, as he was finishing up his work of abridging hundreds of years of Nephite history.  His assignment was to take all the records that had been kept by the Nephite people for nearly 1,000 years and make a small abridgement.

この聖句はモルモンがニーファイ人の何百年という歴史の要約作業を終えようとしていた時に残したものです。彼の使命は千年にものぼるニーファイ人が守ってきた全ての記録を小さく要約する事でした。

That must have been a very difficult task.  First of all, he had to read through all the records, perhaps many times, to become familiar with everything that was written.  Then, he had to make many difficult choices as to which stories or events should be included in his abridgement and which ones he had to leave out.  

それは非常に困難な作業だったはずです。まず彼は全ての記録を読まなければなりませんでした。恐らく書かれている内容に精通するまで何度も何度も読んだはずです。そしてどの話や出来事を採用し何を省くべきかといった幾つもの難しい決断をしなければなりませんでした。

Once he had done all that, he then had to write out, by hand, roughly 400 pages of history.  He didn’t have a keyboard, a big monitor, and a powerful word processing program.  He didn’t even have paper and lots of pencils.  All he had was a stylus and metal plates.  Every word he wrote had to be carefully etched into plates of gold.  No erasures, no scratch-outs, no mistakes.  

これらの作業を終えると彼は400 頁にも及ぶ記録を手作業で書かねばなりませんでした。今のようにキーボードや大きなモニター、ワードプロセッサーもありませんでした。紙や豊富な鉛筆すらありませんでした。ただ金属板と鉄筆があるだけでした。記録する全ての言葉を注意深く金版に彫り込まねばなりませんでした。消しゴムなど無く間違いも許されませんでした。

It is hard to imagine how difficult that task would have been.  Apparently, it took years for him to finish this very important assignment.  Without his hard work, we would not have the Book of Mormon today.  That is also why it is called the book of “Mormon”, not the book of “Nephi” or the book of “Alma”.  It doesn’t mean that he wrote the entire history. It means that he was the one who made the small abridgement that we have today.

その作業がどれほど困難なものだったのか想像もできません。明らかなのはこの非常に大切な作業に多くの年月を費やしたということです。彼の勤勉な働きが無ければ今日私たちがモルモン書を手にすることは出来なかったのです。だからこそ「ニーファイ」書とも「アルマ」書とも呼ばれず「モルモン」書と呼ばれているのです。かといって彼が全ての歴史を書いたわけではありません。彼が今日私たちが手にする小さな要約本を作成した一人であるということです。

Mormon says that, after finally finishing all that work, he went back through the original records again and found a set of small plates.  The history on the small plates was from the same time period that he had written about in the Book of Lehi.  He didn’t see any reason to include the small plates, since he had already written the abridgement of the history of that time period.  

モルモンが言うには全ての作業を終えた後、彼は原本をもう一度見直し小版の一個所を見つけたのです。小版にある記録はリーハイの書が書かれていたのと同じ時期でした。その時期の記録はすでに書いていたので小版を追加する理由は彼にはわかりませんでした。

However, he says that he was prompted to include the small plates anyway.  He did not understand why, but he knew he was being told to include them.

しかし、彼はその小版を含めるよう促しを受けたと述べています。何故かは理解できませんでしたがそれを含めるよう言われていたことはわかっていました。

Mormon had no idea that Martin Harris would lose the manuscript for the Book of Lehi.  Mormon did not know what was going to happen.  He says, “I do not know all things”.  But even without understanding why he needed to include the small plates, he followed the direction of the Spirit.

モルモンはマーテン・ハリスがリーハイ版の原本を無くすことなど知る由もありませんでした。何が将来起こるかなどわかりませんでした。彼は「わたしはすべてのことを知っているわけでわない」と述べています。何故、小版を含めるべきなのか分かりませんでしたが彼は御霊の導きに従ったのです。

The important lesson for us here is that, when we receive a prompting from the Holy Ghost, we need to follow that prompting.  We do not always know why the Holy Ghost prompts us to do things. The “why?” is not important.  What is important is that we take action and, like Mormon, follow what we are prompted to do.

ここでも私たちにとって大切なレッスンがあります。私たちが聖霊の導きを受けるときその促しに従う必要があるということです。私たちは聖霊が何かをするように促す理由をいつも理解出来るとは限りません。「なぜ」ということは重要ではないのです。重要なのは行動を起こしモルモンのように何かをするようにという促しに従うということです。

If Mormon had not followed the promptings of the Spirit, we would not have the first 150 pages or so of the Book of Mormon.  We would have lost many important scriptures.  We would be without key doctrine.

もしモルモンが御霊の促しに従っていなければモルモン書の最初の約150 頁は私たちには無いのです。多くの大切な聖句が失われていたのです。要となる教義を失っていたのです。

When the Holy Ghost prompts us, we need to act.  It does not matter about the “why?”.  It does not matter whether we understand all the consequences.  It does not matter if it does not make sense to us at the time.  It does matter that we follow the guidance of the Spirit.  We will always be right if we do.

聖霊が促す時、私たちは行動する必要があります。「なぜ」はそんなに重要ではありません。すべての結末を理解していることはそんなに重要ではありません。その時に納得できなくてもそんなに重要なことではありません。霊の導きに従うことが重要なのです。行動することで私たちは正しいとされるのです。

As we go through this next week, let’s be sensitive to the promptings that we receive.  Let’s learn to listen to the whisperings of the Spirit.  Let’s learn to be like Mormon and to take action when we receive a prompting.  

今週、受ける促しに気付くよう過ごしてみましょう。霊のささやきを聞く訓練をしましょう。モルモンのように促しを受けるとき行動することを学びましょう。
