おお、人の子らは何と愚かで、虚栄心が強く、邪悪で悪魔に従い、何と罪悪を行うのが早く、善を行うのが遅いことか。何と悪しき者の言葉を聴くのが早く、俗世のむなしいものに執着するのが早いことか。まことに、何と高慢になるのが早いことか。何と誇るのが早く、あらゆる罪悪を行うのが早いことか。人の子らは何と主なる神を思い起こすのが遅く、主の勧告に耳を傾けるのが遅いことか。何と知恵の道を歩むのが遅いことか。ヒラマン１２：４－５

O how foolish, and how vain, and how evil, and devilish, and how quick to do iniquity, and how slow to do good, are the children of men; yea, how quick to hearken unto the words of the evil one, and to set their hearts upon the vain things of the world.  Yea, how quick to be lifted up in pride; yea, how quick to boast, and do all manner of that which is iniquity; and how slow are they to remember the Lord their God, and to give ear unto his counsels, yea, how slow to walk in wisdom’s paths. Helaman 12:4-5

This scripture is a lament, given by Nephi (the son of Helaman, not the son of Lehi) as he pondered over the sins of the Nephite people.  It contains important counsel and wisdom for us today, just as it did for the ancient Nephites.

この聖句は哀歌でニーファイ「ヒラマンの息子。リーハイの息子ではない」が民の罪について思いめぐらしていた時に与えられました。古代のニーファイ人と同じように、そこには今日の私たちにも大切な勧告と知恵が含まれています。

King Benjamin taught this same principle when he told his people that “the natural man is an enemy to God”.  

ベニヤミン王は民に「生まれながらの人は神の敵である」と、これと同じ原則を教えました。

Both Nephi and king Benjamin were trying to teach their people to be humble, to be meek, to be obedient to the commandments of God.  Both of these prophets warned the people that the natural man is quick to do evil, but slow to follow God.

ニーファイとベニヤミン王は人々に謙遜であり、へりくだり、神の戒めに従順であるよう教えました。この二人の預言者は共に生まれながらの人は悪を行うのが早く神に従うのが遅いと民に警告しました。

Is it any different in our world today?

これは今の世とどれほど違っているでしょう？

We live in a world of affluence.  We live in a world of relative peace.  We live in a world of sophistication.

私たちは裕福な時代に暮らしをしています。比較的平和な世界や高度の知的社会に暮らしています。

While all those things are good, they bring a danger with them.  The danger is that, when things are easy, we tend to forget God.  If there are no trials, we begin to think that we do not need God.  When we have a pleasant life, we begin to think that we are smart.  

これらはどれも良いことではありますが危険も含んでいます。危険というのは例えば、物事が用意になると私たちは神を忘れる傾向があり、もし試練が無ければ私たちは神など必要ないと思い始めたりします。ここちよい生活をしていると自分は賢いと思い始めます。

Many of us have known individuals who suddenly became very wealthy.  In many cases, wealth ruined their lives. Wealth made them proud.  It made them value the “vain things of the world” more than the humble things of God.  It often made them lose their testimony of the gospel.

裕福に突然なった人を知っている方も多くいることでしょう。多くの場合、富が彼らの生活を破滅させています。富が彼らを高慢にしたり、価値あるものを神の謙虚なものより「世の価値のないものにしたり」します。また時には福音の証を無くさせたりします。

Others, who had great opportunities for education, had similar problems.  When they became well-educated, they began to think that they were smarter than God.  They began to think that education was more powerful than the promptings of the Spirit.  They began to drift away from the covenant path.

他にも多く教育を受けている人が同じような問題を持つことがあります。高学歴を身に着けると自分は神よりも賢いと考えるようになり、学問は御霊のささやき以上に力があると考えたりします。彼らは誓約の道からそれて行ったりします。

Today’s world is a world of sophistication.  People who are humble followers of God are looked down upon by the “sophisticated” people.  The sophisticated people think their opinions are the only ones that can be correct and attack anyone who has a different belief.  The sophisticated people think that serving others is a waste of their valuable time.  They do not feel they need God in their lives.

今日の世界は高度な知的要素に満ち複雑です。神に従う謙遜な人が「高度に教養のある」者に見下げらています。高度に教養のある者が彼らの考えは唯一正しくて、違った考えや信条を持つものを攻撃したりします。彼らは誰かのために仕えることなど貴重な時間を無駄にすることだと考えたりします。彼らの生活に神など不要だと感じています。

The wealthy people, the well-educated people, the sophisticated people are symbolized by those people that Nephi saw in the “large and spacious building”.  They are the ones who mocked the people who were on the path to the tree of life.  They are the ones who will never get to taste of the fruit of the tree of life.

それらの裕福な人、高学歴の人、教養のある人はニーファイが見た「大きく​広々​と​した​建物​」を象徴しています。彼らは命の木に通じる道にいる人々を嘲笑した人たちです。彼らは命の木の実を味わうことのなかった人たちです。

What do we need to learn from Nephi’s counsel?

ニーファイの勧告から私たちは何を学ぶべきでしょう？

We need to learn to be humble.  We need to learn to listen to the counsel of the Lord as given by his prophets and apostles.  We need to learn to walk in “wisdom’s path”.  We need to learn to put off the natural man.

私たちは謙遜を学ぶ必要があります。預言者や使徒たちを通して与えられる主の勧告を聞くことを学ぶ必要があります。私たちは「知恵の道」を歩むことを学ぶ必要があります。また生まれたままの性質を捨てることを学ぶ必要があります。

As we go through this next week, let’s do our best to follow what Nephi has taught us.  Let’s try to be better followers of Jesus Christ.  Let’s recognize that all that we have comes from the Lord.  Let’s be humble, teachable, and of strong faith.

ニーファイの教えたことに最善を尽くして従うよう今週を過ごしましょう。イエス・キリストのより良い従者となるよう努めましょう。私たちが受けているすべてが主から与えられていることを理解し認めましょう。謙遜で、教えをよく聞き、強い信仰を持ちましょう。
