And now, by dearly beloved brethren and sisters, let me assure you that these are principles in relation to the dead and the living that cannot be lightly passed over, as pertaining to our salvation. For their salvation is necessary and essential to our salvation, as Paul says concerning the fathers — that they without us cannot be made perfect — neither can we without our dead be made perfect. Doctrine & Covenants 128:15
In Section 128 of the Doctrine & Covenants, the Prophet Joseph Smith teaches us important doctrine about our duties to our ancestors and to ourselves.
教義と聖約第128章で予言者ジョセフ・スミスは先祖や私たちの務めについて大切な教義を私たちに教えています。
In this revelation, the Prophet Joseph Smith emphasizes how important these principles, saying that they “cannot be lightly passed over”. We need to give serious consideration to his counsel.
この啓示の中で予言者ジョセフ・スミスはこれらの教義がどれ程重要なのかを強調し、軽々しく見過ごすことはできないと述べています。私たちも彼の勧告を真剣に受け止めて考える必要があります。
As additional revelation was given to the Prophet Joseph Smith, he began to teach the Saints about the principle of baptism for the dead. This glorious doctrine solved what had been an insolvable problem for leaders in the Christian churches. The Bible clearly taught that no one could enter into Heaven without being baptized. Yet, there had been, and would continue to be, millions of people who died without ever having been baptized.
更なる啓示が予言者ジョセフ・スミスに与えられ、彼は聖徒に死者のためのバプテスマの原則を教えました。この輝かしい教義はキリスト教会の指導者たちが解決できなかった問題を解決したのです。聖書では確かにバプテスマ受けずに誰一人天に入ることは出来ないと教えています。しかし過去に何億と言う人がバプテスマを受けずに亡くなっていますし、これからもそうでしょう。
The leaders of the Christian churches struggled with the idea that those millions of people would have to suffer in hell forever, simply because they lived in a time or in a place where baptism was not available.
キリスト教会の指導者たちはバプテスマが受けられない時期や場所にいたと言うだけの理由でそれら何億という人が地獄で永遠に苦しむと言う考えに悩みました。
Those who did not believe in Christianity often used this concept to refute the claims of the Christian churches that they had the true gospel of Jesus Christ. They asked,“How could God allow all those people to suffer forever and still be a merciful God?”. Until the revelations given to the Prophet Joseph Smith, no one had an answer for this question.
キリスト教を信じない人たちは真のキリストの福音を持っていると宣言する教会を論駁するのにこの教えを利用しました。彼らは、神がそれらの人々が永遠に苦しむことを許されるのにどうして慈悲深い神などと言えるのかと聞くのです。予言者ジョセフ・スミスがその啓示を受けるまで誰もこの質問に答えることが出来ませんでした。
But with the light of revelation came new hope and new understanding. Those who had lived without being baptized could still receive the blessings of that ordinance by proxy. The Saints were instructed to begin gathering information about their ancestors and to take those names to the Temple. There, they could receive those ordinances on behalf of their ancestors.
しかし啓示の光のおかげで新たな希望と理解がもたらされました。バプテスマを受けずして過去に生きた人も身代りによりその儀式の祝福を受けることが出来るのです。聖徒たちは先祖の情報を集め始め、そして彼らの名前を神殿に提出するように指導されています。そこで彼らの先祖に代わってそれらの儀式を受けれるのです。
This was a very new and very exciting doctrine. The Prophet Joseph Smith exhorted the Saints to go forward with this great work. In this scripture, he again reminds them that the salvation of our ancestors in necessary for our own salvation.
これはとても新しく興奮する教義です。予言者ジョセフ・スミスはこの偉大な業を推し進めるよう聖徒たちに熱心に勧めました。この聖句では彼は聖徒らに私たちの救いには先祖の救いが必要であることを思い起こさせています。
He quotes the Apostle Paul, saying “they without us cannot be made perfect and we without them cannot be made perfect”.
彼は使徒パウロが言った「わたしたちなしにはかれらが完全な者となることはない、またわたしたちの死者なしには、わたしたちも完全の者とされることはない」という言葉を引用しています。
Today, family history and Temple work are moving forward rapidly. New tools, such as FamilySearch, and new Temples, help to make this work even easier.
今日、家族歴史と神殿の業が早い勢いで前進しています。ファミリーサーチといった新しいツールや新しい神殿がこの業を更に行いやすいよう助けています。
The most important aspect of this great work, though, is our own involvement. No one else can save our ancestors. We cannot be saved if we ignore them. We cannot be saved if we do not help them. We cannot be saved if we do not obtain those ordinances for them.
この偉大な業の最も重要な特徴は私たちが参加すると言うことです。他の誰も私たちの先祖を救うことは出来ません。私たちが彼らのことを無視すれば私たちも救われません。彼らを助けなければ私たちは救われません。彼らのために儀式を受けなければ私たちは救われないのです。
This is a great and eternal work. Let’s make a greater effort to search out and find our own ancestors. Let’s make a greater effort to get their names to the Temple. Let’s make a greater effort to ensure our salvation by helping them obtain their salvation.
これは偉大な永遠の業なのです。更に努力をし私たちの先祖を見つけ出しましょう。そして神殿に彼らの名前を提出しましょう。更に努力をし先祖が救いを得られるよう助けることで自分の救いを確保しましょう。
Great blessings will come to us as we serve our ancestors.
先祖のために奉仕することでより大きな祝福がやって来ることでしょう。
