主はヤレドの兄弟に言われた。「あなたがたは、船の中に光があるようにするために、わたしに何をしてもらいたいのか。窓はばらばらに砕けるので、見よ、窓を付けることはできない。また、火を携えることもない。火の光を使って旅をすることはないからである。」
エテル２：２３

And the Lord said unto the brother of Jared: What will ye that I should do that ye may have light in your vessels?  For behold, ye cannot have windows, for they shall be dashed in pieces; neither shall ye take fire with you, for ye shall not go by the light of fire.  Ether 2:23

When the Jaredites reached the ocean, the Lord instructed the brother of Jared to build 8 boats.  The boats must have been large, because there were many people.  In addition to the people, there also had to be enough room for the flocks and herds that were to go with them.  And, there had to be enough space to store all the food that the people and the animals would need for a one year voyage.

ヤレドの民が海にたどり着いた時、主は8隻の船を造るようヤレドの兄弟に命じられました。乗員の人数を考えると船は大きかったに違いありません。乗員の他に一緒に連れていく鳥や家畜のスペースや一年越しの航海に必要な食物を貯蔵するスペースも必要だったはずです。

The brother of Jared followed the instructions of the Lord and built the 8 ships.  Once the ships were completed, he could see that there were some problems that needed to be solved.

ヤレドの兄弟は主の指示に従って8隻の船を造りました。船が完成したときこのままでは航海に支障が出る幾つかの問題が見つかりました。

First, since the boats had to be tight to keep the water out, they also kept the air out.  The brother of Jared understood that they could not live without oxygen.  He asked the Lord what he should do to provide air for the people to breathe.  

まず船は水が入らないようしっかりと密閉されているため外の空気も遮断されていました。ヤレドの兄弟は酸素なしでは生きられないことを理解していました。彼はどうしたら乗員に必要な空気を確保できるか主に尋ねました。

The Lord instructed him to make holes, or vents, in the top of the ships and a drain hole in the bottom.  When they needed air, they could open the top vents.  If it was stormy and water came in through the top vents, they should close the top vents.  The water that came into the ship could be drained by opening the bottom drain.

主は彼に幾つかの穴か換気口を船の上部に、また水抜き穴を船底に作るよう命じられました。空気が必要な時は上部の換気口を開ければよく、嵐で上部の換気口から水が入るようならそれを閉じればよいのです。船の中に水が入ってくれば船底の栓を抜くことで排出できるのです。

That solved the air problem.  But then the brother of Jared realized that it would be totally dark inside the ships.  He knew they could not live in total darkness for a year.  Again he went to the Lord to ask for a solution.

それで空気の問題は解決しました。しかしヤレドの兄弟は船の中が真っ暗であることに気付きました。暗闇の中一年間暮らすことは出来ません。再び彼は解決策を求めて主に尋ねました。

This time, the Lord did not give him an immediate solution.  Instead, the Lord asked the brother of Jared to think about the problem and to come up with some ideas on how to solve it.  The Lord eliminated two possibilities right away.  The Lord said there cannot be any windows in the ships, because windows would be broken by the storms.  And, they could not have fire inside the ships, probably because of the danger to the wooden ship.

今回は主はすぐに解決策を教えてくださいませんでした。かわりに主はヤレドの兄弟に解決策を自分なりに考えてみるように言われました。主はまず二つの可能性を省かれました。嵐で窓が砕けるので船には窓はあってはいけないと主は言われました。火も船の中で使ってはいけないとも言われました。恐らく木製の船では火は危険だからでしょう。

The brother of Jared had to ponder, to pray, and to think about how to solve his problem.  After some time, he came up with an idea from the days of Noah.  He made 16 small clear stones and asked the Lord to touch them so they would shine and give them light inside of the boats.

ヤレドの兄弟は問題を解決するため熟考し、祈り、考えました。しばらくしてノアの時代からヒントを得てある考えが浮かびました。16個の小さな透き通った石を作り、その石が光を放ち船の中を照らすよう触れて下さいと主に尋ねました。

In our own lives, the Lord does not always give us an immediate answer to our challenges.  The Lord expects us to use our own initiative and our own efforts to solve the problems that we face.  It is often through this process that we learn valuable lessons.

私たちの生活においても主は私たちの問題に即座に答えをくださるとは限りません。主は私たちが抱える問題を解決するために自ら進んで考え、努力するように望んでおられます。私たちは往々にしてこうした過程を通して貴重なレッスンを学びます。

Just because the Lord does not answer our prayers immediately does not mean that he does not hear us or does not love us.  It may mean that, like the brother of Jared, we are expected to make use of the talents the Lord has already given us to solve the problem.  It may mean that we need to learn something by going through the struggle to find an answer.  It may mean that we need to increase our faith and our patience.

主がすぐに祈りに答えられないからといって、それは主が私たちの祈りを聞かれないとか愛しておられないということではありません。それはヤレドの兄弟のように私たちは主がすでに与えて下さっている才能を使うことを望んでおられるのかもしれません。また答えを見つけようとあれこれ苦しむ過程で何かを学ぶ必要があるのかもしれません。また信仰と忍耐を増す必要があるということかもしれません。

As we go through this next week, let’s remember the example of the brother of Jared.  Let’s remember that the Lord expects us to do all that we can do with the talents and abilities he has given us.  Let’s remember that even if it takes time to receive the guidance and help that we need, the Lord loves us and will help us.

ヤレドの兄弟の模範を覚えてこの新しい週を過ごしましょう。主が与えてくださった才能と能力を最大限使うよう望んでおられることを忘れないようにしましょう。導きや助けを受けるのに時間がかかるとしても主は私たちを愛し手を貸してくださることを覚えていましょう。
