主はまた彼らに、「あなたがたの同胞であるレーマン人の中へ行き、わたしの言葉を確立しなさい。しかし、あなたがたはわたしにあって彼らに良い模範を示せるように、長い苦しみと苦難の中で忍耐強くありなさい。そうすれば、わたしはあなたがたをわたしの手に使われる者として多くの人を救おう」と言われた。アルマ１７：１１

And the Lord said unto them also: Go forth among the Lamanites, thy brethren, and establish my word; yet ye shall be patient in long-suffering and afflictions, that ye may show forth good examples unto them of me, and I will make an instrument of thee in my hands unto the salvation of many souls.  Alma 17:11

Ammon and his brothers were royalty.  They were princes.  Their father was the king.  They could have stayed in Zarahemla and led lives of ease and luxury.  

アンモンと彼の兄弟たちは王族でした。王子であり彼らの父親は王でした。彼らはゼラヘムラに留まり気楽で贅沢な生活を送り続けることも出来たはずです。

But they chose to be missionaries instead.

しかし彼らは宣教師となることを選んだのです。

And, they chose not to be just missionaries to the Nephites.  They chose to be missionaries to the Lamanites, a people who were the enemy of the Nephites.  The Lamanites hated the Nephites.  They were a wicked and evil people.  

そして彼らはニーファイ人の宣教師であるだけでなく、ニーファイ人の敵であるレーマン人のための宣教師となることを選んだのです。レーマン人はニーファイ人を憎んでいました。彼らは邪悪で悪人でした。

Even their own families thought they were making a bad choice.  They had to beg their father to allow them to go. It required revelation from the Lord to their father to convince him to allow them to go.

彼らは家族からも間違った選択をしようとしてると思われていました。彼らは父親に行くことを赦してもらうように嘆願しました。行くことを父親に説得するために主からの啓示が必要でした。

Having given up so much, and having such a strong desire to take the message of the gospel to the Lamanites, shouldn’t the Lord have made it easy for them?  Shouldn’t they have been given immediate success in their missionary efforts?  After all, it was the Lord that commanded them to “go forth among the Lamanites and establish my word”.

何度も諦めかけレーマンの民に福音を伝えたいという強い望みがあったので、主は彼らを簡単に助けれたでしょうか？宣教師の働きが即座に成功をもたらしたでしょうか？結局のところ主は彼らに「あなたがたの同胞であるレーマン人の中へ行き、わたしの言葉を確立しなさい」と命ぜられたのです。

It did not happen that way.

簡単には行かなかったのです。

Even before they began to teach the Lamanites, the Lord told them to be “patient and long-suffering in afflictions”.  The Lord told them that they would have trials and hardships.  The Lord told them that it would not be easy for them.

彼らがレーマン人に教え始める以前から主は「長い苦しみと苦難の中で忍耐強くありなさい」と言われました。彼らは試練や苦難を受け、また簡単ではないと主から言われました。

As they entered into the land of the Lamanites, they all began to experience afflictions.  Ammon was taken by the guards of the king and bound with strong ropes.  He was taken before king Lamoni, who could decide to kill him.  

彼らがレーマン人の土地に入ると苦難を受け始めました。アンモンは王の守衛に連れていかれ強い縄で縛られました。彼は死刑にも出来る権限を持つラモーナイ王の前に引き出されました。

The other missionaries also suffered many trials.  All were persecuted.  Many were arrested and put into prison.  Why did the Lord allow this to happen?

他の宣教師も多くの試練に苦しみました。皆、迫害に遭いました。多くは捕らえられ獄に入れられました。主は何故そのようなことを許されていたのでしょう？

From the account of Ammon, we learn that it was by Ammon “showing forth good examples” that he was able to gain the confidence of king Lamoni.  It was by Ammon’s good examples that king Lamoni’s heart was softened and he was prepared to hear the message of the gospel.

アンモンの記述から私たちはアンモンが「良い模範を示すことで」ラモーナイ王の信頼を得ることが出来ることを学べます。アンモンがよい模範を示すことでラモーナイ王の心が和らぎ福音のメッセージを聞く準備が出来たのです。

We also, in our own lives, must be patient and long-suffering in afflictions.  We cannot expect the Lord to remove all trials and hardships from our path, even when we are doing everything the Lord has asked us to do.  

私たちも自身の生活で長い苦しみと苦難の中でも忍耐強くいなければなりません。主が行うよう言われた全ての事を行っていたとしても、主が全ての試練や苦難を私たちの前から取り除いてくださると期待してはいけません。

It is by being patient and by being good examples that we are blessed.   It is by passing through times of trials and afflictions that we are able to learn and to grow.  It is by being good examples that we are able to help prepare others to hear the gospel message.

祝福されるには忍耐強く良い模範を示さねばなりません。学び成長するためには試練や苦難を経験しなければなりません。良い模範を示すことで私たちは誰かが福音のメッセージを聞く準備の手助けをするのです。

Not all of us can be great leaders in the Church.  Not all of us can be great missionaries like Ammon.  But we all can be good examples!  Each of us has the ability to be a good example to those around us.  We can be good examples to those at our schools, or at our work, or in our communities, or even in our own homes.

私たちの誰もが教会で指導者になるわけではありません。私たちの誰もがアンモンのような偉大な宣教師になるわけではありません。けれど私たちは誰でもよい模範になれます。私たちの誰もが周りにいる人々に良い模範であることが出来ます。私たちは学校でも職場でも地域社会でも、また自分の家族の中でも良い模範になることが出来ます。

As we strive to be good examples, the Lord promises us that he will make us instruments in his hands for the salvation of many souls.  What a great promise and blessing.  It is within the reach of all of us.  

良い模範であろうと努めるとき、多くの霊の救いのため私たちを主の手足とされると主は約束されています。何と素晴らしい約束と祝福なのでしょう。それは私たちの手が届くすぐ近くにあるのです。

This week, let’s focus on being a good example in all that we do.  Let’s do the small and simple things that the Lord has asked us to do.  Let’s be good examples to help prepare the hearts of others to hear the gospel message.  Let’s become instruments in the hands of the Lord.

今週も私たちの行い全てにおいてよい模範になることを忘れないよう努めましょう。主が私たちに行うよう教えられた簡単で小さな事柄を行いましょう。誰かが福音のメッセージを聞く準備が出来るために善い行いをしましょう。主の手足となりましょう。
