見よ、モーセも神の御子について述べた。荒れ野で一つの予型が掲げられ、それを仰ぎ見ようとした者はだれでも、生き延びられるようにされた。そして、多くの人がそれを見て生き延びた。しかし、そのことの意味を理解した人はわずかであった。かれらの心がかたくなてあったからである。そして、予型を見ようともしないほどかたくなな人が大勢おり、られらは死んでしまった。かれらが見ようとしなかったのは、それで自分が癒されるとは信じなかったからである。アルマ書３３：１９－２０

Behold, he was spoken of by Moses; yea, and behold a type was raised up in the wilderness, that whosoever would look upon it might live.  And many did look and live.  But few understood the meaning of those things, because of the hardness of their hearts.  But there were many who were so hardened that they would not look, therefore they perished.  Now the reason they would not look is because they did not believe that it would heal them.  Alma 33:19-20

This scripture refers to an event that took place when Moses was leading the children of Israel through the wilderness.  The people had become wicked and would not listen to Moses.  The Lord sent poisonous snakes that bit many people.  

この聖句はモーセが荒れ野でイスラエルの子らを導いていた時の出来事を記録したものです。人々は邪悪になりモーセの言うことを聞きませんでした。主は毒蛇を送られ多くの者が噛まれました。

Moses was commanded to make a brass snake and put it up on a pole.  If someone was bitten by a snake, all they had to do was to look at the brass snake and they would be healed.  Surprisingly, there were many who were bitten who would not look at the brass snake.  Because of their unbelief, they died.

モーセは真鍮の蛇を作り杖の上に掲げるよう命じられました。もし誰か蛇に噛まれたなら、ただその真鍮の蛇を見るだけで癒されるというのです。驚いたことに噛まれた多くのものがその真鍮の蛇を見ようとしなかったのです。その不信仰のために彼らは死にました。

When we read about this, we sometimes smile and think to ourselves, “Those people were very foolish.  All they had to do was to look!  If they looked, they would be healed.  How could they be so foolish.  If I had been there, I would have looked quickly!”

これを読むとき私たちは笑い、こう思うでしょう。「彼らは愚かだ。ただ見るだけでよかったのに。見れば癒されたのに。なぜそんなに愚かなんだろう。自分がもしそこにいればすぐに見ただろう」と。

But are we really any different than those people who were bitten and who refused to look?

しかし私たちは見ることを拒み噛まれた彼らとどれほど違うでしょうか？

The Lord often works by small and simple things.  The Lord gives us simple tasks and promises us great blessings if we complete those tasks.  Even though we laugh at the people who would not look, are we any different today?  Do we have the faith to look at our own “brass snake”.

主は時折小さく簡単なことで業を行われます。主は私たちに小さな務めを与え、それを成し遂げれば大いなる祝福を約束しておられます。私たちは見なかった人々を笑いますが、私たちは果たして彼らとどれ程違うでしょうか？私たちには自分の「真鍮の蛇」を見るだけの信仰がありますか？

The Lord has given us the Book of Mormon.  We have been told by prophets of God that we need to read the Book of Mormon every day.  We have been promised that we will receive great blessings in our lives if we will read the Book of Mormon.  Are we willing to look at this “brass snake” and be healed?

主は私たちにモルモン書を与えてくださいました。神の預言者から毎日モルモン書を読むように言われています。モルモン書を読めば私たちの生活に大いなる祝福を受けると約束されています。私たちは心からこの「真鍮の蛇」を見て癒されたいと望んでいますか？

The Lord has commanded us to attend our Church meetings on Sunday.  We have been commanded to repent and to take the sacrament worthily each Sunday.  We have been promised great blessings if we do these things.  Are we willing to look at this “brass snake” and be healed?

主は私たちに日曜日教会の集会に出席するよう戒められました。悔い改めて毎日曜日ふさわしく聖餐をとるよう戒められました。私たちはそうするなら大いなる祝福を約束されています。私たちは心からこの「真鍮の蛇」を見て癒されたいと望んでいますか？

We have all been given callings and assignments.  These are opportunities to serve the Lord by serving those around us.  No matter what we may think, every calling is just as important as any other calling.  Our duty is to do our best in the calling that we have been given.  Are we willing to look at this “brass snake” and be healed?

私たちは皆、召しや責任を受けています。それらは周りにいる人々に仕えることで主に仕える機会となのです。私たちがどう考えようと、どの召しも他のどのような召しと同じように大切なのです。私たちの義務は受けている召しに最善を尽くすということです。私たちは心からこの「真鍮の蛇」を見て癒されたいと望んでいますか？

Perhaps most importantly of all, we have been told by prophets of God that we should attend the Temple as often as our circumstances allow.  We have been repeatedly counseled to always be worthy of holding a Temple recommend.  We have been taught about the importance of finding our own ancestors so they can receive their Temple blessings.  Are we willing to look at this “brass snake” and be healed?

おそらく最も大切なのは、状況が許す限り頻繁に神殿に参入するよう神の預言者から言われていることです。私たちは常に神殿推薦状を持つにふさわしくあるよう繰り返し勧告を受けています。自身の先祖が神殿の祝福を受けれるよう彼らを見つける大切さも教えられています。私たちはこの「真鍮の蛇」を見て癒されたいと思っていますか？

As we begin this new year, let us decide today to always “look at the brass snake” and be healed.  Let us decide today to do all those small and simple things that the Lord asks us to do.  Let us decide today to keep all the commandments.  By doing this, we will receive all those blessings that have been promised to those who love and obey the Lord.

新しい年が始まるにあたり、「真鍮の蛇を見て」癒されることを今日決意しましょう。主が私たちに行うように言われた小さく簡単な事柄をすべて実行すると今日決意しましょう。全ての戒めを守ると今日決意しましょう。そうすることで私たちは主を愛し、主に従うすべてのものに約束されたすべての祝福を受けるのです。
