さて、これは信仰にしっかりと立っている人々にとって大きな試練であった。にもかかわらず、彼らは確固として動かずに神の戒めを守り、また自分たちに加えられる迫害に辛抱強く耐えた。アルマ章１：２５

Now this was a great trial to those that did stand fast in the faith; nevertheless, they were steadfast and immovable in keeping the commandments of God, and they bore with patience the persecutions where were heaped upon them.  Alma 1:25

This scripture, recorded in the first chapter of Alma, refers to a time when the members of the Church were being persecuted by the non-believers.  It reminds us that trials and difficulties are something that we all experience, no matter when or where we live.

アルマ書の最初に記録されたこの聖句は教会の会員が不信仰な人たちに迫害されていた時の話です。試練や困難は私たちがいつどこに住んでいようと誰もが経験することを思い起こさせています。

In some cases, those who believed in God did not just suffer persecution.  In many cases, they were killed for their beliefs.  

時には神を信じる者が迫害で苦しむだけでは終わりませんでした。多くの場合、彼らの信条のため殺されたのです。

For example, many of the men who first tried to translate the Latin Bible into English or Dutch or German were killed.  They wanted to give the common people an opportunity to read the Bible in their own language.   Because of the wickedness of those in power, many of those men were killed.

たとえば、ラテン語の聖書を英語やオランダ語、ドイツ語などに翻訳しようとした多くのものが殺されたのです。彼らは一般の人にも彼らの言語で聖書を読む機会を与えたかったのです。権力のあるものの邪悪さのため彼らの多くが殺されたのです。

During the Tokugawa era in Japan, anyone who accepted Christianity did so at the peril of their own life.  If it became known that they were Christians, they were often killed.

日本でも徳川の時代、キリスト教を受け入れるものは誰でも自分の命を失うことも覚悟していました。もしクリスチャンであることが明るみになれば殺されることもありました。

In the early days of the Church in our time, many of the early Church members were driven out of their homes by mobs.  Many died because of their faith in the restored gospel.

私たちの時代でも初期の教会では多くの会員が暴徒によって家を追放されました。多くが回復された福音を信じる信仰のために死んだのです。

While we all have trials and difficulties, it is unlikely that any of us will be killed because we believe in Jesus Christ.

私たちは誰でも試練や苦難はあるものの、イエス・キリストを信じるために殺されるようなことはまずありません。

We need to remember the righteous Nephites and follow their example when we face our own trials and persecutions.

私たちは試練や迫害に会うとき正しいニーファイ人のことを忘れず、彼らの模範に従う必要があります。

In our day, persecution does not normally come from mobs, like it did in the days of Joseph Smith.  Our persecutions are usually different.  For us, persecutions often come in the form of people telling us our beliefs are wrong, or saying that Joseph Smith was a fraud, or that the Book of Mormon is a fake.

今の時代、ジョセフスミスの時代のように暴徒から迫害を受けることはまずありません。私たちの迫害は異なったものです。私たちにとって迫害とは他の人が私たちの信条が間違っているとか、ジョセフ・スミスはペテン師でモルモン書はまやかしだと攻撃する形でやってきます。

Persecution can also be in the form of social embarrassment.  We don’t drink when we go to parties or events.  Some people find that very strange.  We attend Church on Sunday, every Sunday.  Some people find that strange.  We believe that some things are right and some things are wrong.  Some people find that very strange.  

迫害は社会的に受ける軽蔑といったものもあります。私たちはパーティやイベントに行ってお酒を飲みません。ある人はそれがとても奇異なことだと思っています。私たちは毎日曜日に教会に出席します。人はそれはおかしいと思っています。私たちは正しいこと、間違っていることをはっきり区別し信じています。人はそれは変だと思っています。

People want us to change our ideas to conform with their own opinions.  They sometimes become angry when we stand up for what we know is right.  They try to make us feel strange or out of touch with society.  They try to say we are old fashioned.  But, they do not try to kill us.

人々は私たちの考えを彼らの意見に合わせるよう求めます。私たちが正しいと信じることのために立ち上がる時彼らは時折憤慨します。彼らは私たちが恥ずかしく社会からかけ離れているように感じさせようとします。彼らは私たちが時代遅れだと言ったりします。それでも彼らは私たちを殺そうとはしません。

Sometimes, our worst persecutions come from our own family members.  Sometimes, it is those we love the most who seem to be attacking us most often.  

時として私たちの最悪の迫害は家族の中から来ることがあります。私たちが愛する者から一番攻撃を受けるように思えることがあります。

In the face of these trials and difficulties, we need to follow the example of the Nephites and be “steadfast and immovable in keeping the commandments of God”.  We know what is right.  We know that there will be persecution because of our beliefs.  It has always been that way.  

そういった試練や苦難に会うとき私たちはニーファイの模範に従い、「神の戒めを守るのに確固として動かずに」いるべきです。私たちは何が正しいか知っています。私たちが信じることのため迫害があることもわかっています。何時の時代もそうでした。

Let’s try harder this week to always be “steadfast and immovable” in keeping the commandments.  Let’s face our trials and difficulties patience.  Let’s stand fast in the faith!

今週、戒めを守るのにいつも「確固として動かずに」いるよう頑張りましょう。試練や苦難を忍耐を持って受け止めましょう。信仰をしっかり守っていきましょう。
