In 1805, the Prophet Joseph Smith was born in Sharon, Vermont. Moroni, though, left the plates in what is now Palmyra, New York. It is roughly 300 miles (500 km) from Sharon to Palmyra. That is about the distance between Tokyo and Osaka, or between Los Angeles and San Francisco. It is a long way from Sharon to Palmyra, especially when you have to walk.
So there was a problem. Somehow, Joseph needed to get from Sharon, Vermont to Palmyra, New York.
How did this happen? And how did Indonesia help solve this problem?
In 1815, a volcano in Indonesia called Mount Tambora erupted. It was a very large eruption and put lots of smoke and ash into the air.
When smoke and ash get into the atmosphere, the prevailing winds blow them from west to east.
As a result of the eruption putting so much smoke and ash into the air, the weather in 1816 in Europe and in the northeastern part of the US was very strange.
The weather was particularly bad in Vermont. There was snow or freezing temperatures every month during 1816.
All the crops died and there was no food for the people to eat.
Because of the strange weather, most of the people who lived in Vermont had to leave. In fact, so many people left that even 100 years later, in 1916, the population of Vermont was still less than it had been in 1815.
Joseph Smith’s family was one of the families that left Vermont.
Where did they go? To Palmyra, New York.
So the Lord used the eruption of a volcano that was thousands of miles away in Indonesia to get the Prophet and his family to move to Palmyra, just 3 miles from the place where Moroni had hidden the plates.

インドネシアはどのようにしてこの問題を解決したのでしょうか。
１８１５年、インドネシアでタンボラ山と呼ばれる火山が噴火しました。
大噴火で大量の煙と火山灰が空中にばらかれました。
煙と火山灰は気流に乗って西から東へと運ばれます。
この大噴火の結果、大気中の煙と火山灰が原因で、１８１６年のヨーロッパとアメリカ合衆国北東部は異常気象でした。
バーモント州では特にひどいものでした。
１８１６年は「夏のない年」といわれていました。
その年には毎月雪が降りました。
作物は全て枯れました。
食料が全くありませんでした。
この異常気象のせいで、バーモント州に住んでいたほとんどの人は土地を去ることを余儀なくされました。
ジョセフスミスの家族も去りました。
彼らは何処に行ったのでしょうか。
ニューヨーク州パルマイラです。
ですから、主は何千キロも離れた火山の噴火を起こし、ジョセフスミス一家をモロナイが金版を隠した場所から５キロの所に移動させたのです。
