When you were first learning about the Church, the missionaries taught you about the Word of Wisdom. This important revelation was given by the Lord to the Prophet Joseph Smith in 1833.
As you know, the Word of Wisdom is difficult for many people to accept. You may have struggled with the Word of Wisdom as you prepared for baptism.
Tonight, I will talk about two things from the Word of Wisdom as part of Church history.
Point number 1:
In the Word of Wisdom, there are several things that the Lord commands us not to use. Two of these prohibited things are alcohol and tobacco.
“Hot drinks” are also mentioned in the Word of Wisdom. It does not say “coffee” or “tea” in the Word of Wisdom, only “hot drinks”.
Why do we say that the Word of Wisdom prohibits the use of coffee and tea?
Because the Lord’s prophets have taught us that.
In 1842, Hyrum Smith said “There are many who wonder what this can mean, whether it refers to tea, or coffee, or not. I say that it does refer to tea and coffee.”
Brigham Young said, “I have heard it argued that tea and coffee are not mentioned therein. That is very true. But what were the people in the habit of taking as hot drinks when the revelation was given? Tea and coffee”.
All the prophets since Brigham Young have taught the same thing.
Point number 2:
In verse 2 of the Word of Wisdom, it says it is given “Not by commandment or constraint…”
Does this mean that it is not a commandment?
If it had been enforced immediately in 1833, every member of the Church would have been under condemnation. The Lord knew how difficult it was for people to stop using these things.
It was not really treated by the Church as a commandment until 1851. In the 1851 General Conference, Brigham Young reminded the Church that the Word of Wisdom was a revelation from the Lord and was a commandment.
In 1856, Brigham Young introduced a set of 13 questions, similar to what we use in a Temple recommend interview. There was only one question about the Word of Wisdom. Question #5 was, “Do you get drunk?”
It was not until 1928 that President Heber J. Grant announced that living the Word of Wisdom completely was a requirement to enter the Temple. That was almost 100 years after this revelation was given.
Today, we are all asked if we fully live the Word of Wisdom in a Temple recommend interview.
The Word of Wisdom is a revelation and a commandment from the Lord. I testify that we will receive all the promised blessings as we fully live this law.

なぜならば、主の預言者はそれを教えたからです。
1842年に、ハイラム・スミスはこのように言いました。「多くの人がこれはどういう意味なのかと疑問に思っているようです。
これはお茶とコーヒーを指しています。」
ブリガム・ヤングはこのように言いました。「
私は人々がコーヒーとお茶がそれに含まれていないと言い争っているのを聞きました。それは本当です。
しかし、啓示が与えられたときに人々が熱い飲み物として飲む習慣があったのは何ですか？コーヒーとお茶です。
ブリガム・ヤング以降の預言者全員が同じことを教えています。
第二:
知恵の言葉の二節では、「戒めや強制ではなく…」与えられたと書かれています。
これは戒めではないという意味でしょうか？
もしこれが1833年にただちに強制されていたなら、すべての教会員は非難したことでしょう。
主は人々にとってこれらのものを使わないようにするのがどんなに難しいかをご存知でした。
1851年までは教会の戒めとしては扱われていませんでした。
1851年の総大会で、ブリガム・ヤングは知恵の言葉が主より与えられた啓示であり、戒めであると教えました。
1856年にブリガム・ヤングは私達の神殿推薦状の面接と同じような13の質問を決めました。
知恵の言葉についての質問は一つだけでした。
質問第5、「お酒に酔っていませんか？」

現在は,神殿推薦状の面接で知恵の言葉を完全にまもっているかどうか聞かれます。
知恵の言葉は主からの啓示であり戒めです。
私達はこの律法を完全に守ることによって、約束されたすべての祝福を受けると証します。
