There are two questions that I would like to talk about today.
- What happens when the President of the Church dies?
- How is the next President of the Church chosen?
In all organizations other than the Church, a new leader is usually selected by the members of that organization voting for the person they want as the new leader.
Even in the Catholic Church, the new pope is chosen by voting. Many times, it takes the Cardinals a long time and many separate votes, for a new pope to be chosen. The new pope is the person who gets the most votes.
That is not how it works in the Church.
Succession in the Church is a very simple and orderly process. There are no elections, no voting, no surprises. Here is how it works.
The President of the Church is also the President of the Quorum of the First Presidency. When the President dies, the Quorum of the First Presidency is dissolved. The two counselors return to their previous positions in the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles.
So, when President Monson dies, President Eyring and President Uchtdorf will return to the Quorum of the Twelve. They sit between Elder Holland and Elder Bednar.
The senior Apostle, usually the man serving as the President of the Quorum, will always become the next President of the Church.
If President Monson were to die today, President Russell M. Nelson will become the next President of the Church. President Nelson is the senior member of the Quorum of the Twelve and currently serves as the President of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles.
Sometimes, the man who is the senior member of the Quorum of the Twelve is serving as a counselor in the First a Presidency. In this situation, the next most senior Apostle serves as the Acting President of the Quorum of the Twelve.
When President Hinckley was the President of the Church, President Monson was the senior member of the Quorum of the Twelve. However, President Monson was called to serve as a counselor to President Hinckley. So Elder Packer, who was the next senior Apostle, was called as the Acting President of the Quorum of the Twelve.
This is the Lord's work. He is in control. He knows who the prophet should be. The Lord has given to us the process that is to be followed. We do not need to worry.

教会以外の全ての組織は、通常、その組織の新しい指導者になってほしい人を投票によって選びます。
たとえばカトリック教会で、新しいローマ教皇は投票によって選ばれます。枢機卿会は, 長い時間をかけ数多くの投票をして新しい教皇を選びます。新しい教皇は投票数が一番多かった人がなるのです。
でも、主の教会はこのようにはしません。教会の継承はとても簡潔で秩序正しく行われます。選挙も投票も予期せぬ事もありません。このように行われます。
大管長は大管長会の長でもあります。大管長が亡くなると大管長会は解散します。
二人の顧問は十二使徒定員会のもとの順番にもどります。
だからもしモンソン大管長が亡くなれば、大管長会は解散して、アイリング会長とウクトドルフ会長は十二使徒定員会にもどります。彼らはホランド長老とベトナー長老の間に位置します。
最年長の使徒、通常、十二使徒定員会会長が、いつも次の大管長になります。
もし、今日、モンソン大管長が亡くなられたら、ラッセルエムネルソン長老が次の大管長になります。ネルソン長老は十二使徒の最年長であり、現在十二使徒定員会会長として奉仕されています。
