Brigham Young, the second most important man in this dispensation, was born on June 1, 1801, in Vermont.
He was about 3 years older than the Prophet Joseph Smith.
Like most people of his time, his family was very poor.
They had to work hard every day just to have the basic necessities of life.
His mother died when he was 14 years old.
n order to help earn money for his family, Brigham learned how to be a carpenter.
In 1824, he married Miriam Works.
Brigham and Miriam were searching for the true Church.
In April of 1830, Samuel Smith, the Prophet’s younger brother, gave Brigham’s family a copy of the Book of Mormon.
How long do you think it took Brigham Young to gain a testimony of the Book of Mormon?
He studied the Book of Mormon and prayed about it for two years before gaining a testimony of the gospel.
Brigham Young later taught the Saints that it was not right for anyone to accept any doctrine just because someone else said it was true.
It is the responsibility of each person to study and pray and find out the truth for themselves.
On April 15, 1832, Brigham Young was baptized, confirmed, and ordained an Elder.
He immediately set out as a missionary to preach the gospel.
He served several short missions for the Church during the next few years.
In 1833, Brigham moved his family to Kirtland to be with the Saints.
In 1834, he participated in Zion’s Camp.
Nine members of Zion’s Camp, including Brigham Young, were called to be the first Apostles of this dispensation.
In 1838, Brigham and the rest of the Saints moved to Nauvoo.
He was only there a few months.
Joseph Smith received a revelation calling the Apostles to serve a mission in England.
When the day came for them to leave, Brigham was so sick that he could not even walk.
His sister told him not to go until he felt better.
Brigham replied, “I have never felt better in my life”.
While in England, Brigham Young directed the activities of the other Apostles.
In just two years, almost 8,000 people had been baptized.
All of the Apostles were serving missions when the Prophet and his brother Hyrum were murdered.
Brigham quickly returned to Nauvoo.
He led the Saints out of Nauvoo and on to the Salt Lake Valley.
On the day that the pioneers first saw the Salt Lake valley, Brigham was sick.
He asked that the wagon he was riding in be turned around so he could see the valley.
“This is the place”, he said.
One of the first things that Brigham did after arriving in the valley was to mark the place where the temple would be built.
After such a long and hard trip, how long do you think Brigham stayed in the valley?
He only stayed for about 30 days.
After that, he led a group of men back to Iowa to help bring the next group of Saints to Salt Lake.
In those days, what is now Utah did not belong to the United States.
As the Saints arrived in Salt Lake over the next 10 years, Brigham sent them out to start new towns.
Church members created almost 400 new towns all across the American West.
The Saints had started building the Salt Lake Temple but progress was very slow.
It would not be completed during Brigham Young’s lifetime.
He understood that the members who had received their temple endowment in Nauvoo were getting old and slowly dying.
It was important to have a new temple.
President Young instructed the Saints to build a temple in St. George.
The St. George Temple was dedicated by President Young on April 6, 1877.
It had been 33 years since the Saints had left Nauvoo.
President Young died a few months later, in September of 1877.
He had served as an Apostle for more than 40 years.
He had opened the missionary work in England.
He had led the Saints to the Salt Lake valley.
He had served as the prophet of God, teaching and leading the people after the martyrdom of the Prophet Joseph Smith.
He had started the great work of building temples.
He was truly a Prophet, Seer, and Revelator.
In the Dispensation of the Fullness of Times, he stands second only to the Prophet Joseph Smith.
