日の栄えの王国の律法の諸原則によらなければ、シオンを築き上げることはできない。そうでなければ、わたしはシオンをわたしのもとに迎えることはできない。そして、わたしの民は、たとえ苦しみを受けることによらなければならないとしても、従順を学ぶまで、必ず懲らしめを受けなければならない。教義と聖約１０５：５−６

And Zion cannot be built up unless it is by the principles of the law of the celestial kingdom; otherwise I cannot receive her unto myself.  And my people must needs be chastened until they learn obedience, if it must needs be, by the things that they suffer. Doctrine & Covenants 105:5-6

この啓示は、シオンの陣営がカートランドからミズーリへ移動している際に、預言者ジョセフ・スミスに与えられたものです。当時、ミズーリの聖徒たちはひどい迫害を受けていました。ミズーリの邪悪な集団は、教会に属する者をすべて滅ぼすと宣言していたのです。

This revelation was given to the Prophet Joseph Smith during the march of Zion’s Camp from Kirtland to Missouri.  At that time, the Saints in Missouri were suffering great persecutions. Mobs of wicked people from Missouri had declared that they were going to destroy everyone who belonged to the Church.

多くの会員は、なぜこれほどの迫害を受けるのか不思議に思いました。主は、なぜこのような苦しみを許されたのでしょうか。その祈りに対する答えとして、預言者はこの啓示を受けたのです。

Many Church members wondered why those Saints were receiving so much persecution.  Why did the Lord allow so much suffering? In response to prayers, the Prophet received this revelation.

主は預言者に、正義の律法の原則に従わなければシオンを築き上げることはできないと告げました。もし聖徒たちが「シオンの民」となりたいのであれば、主が示された日の栄えの律法に従わなければなりません。

The Lord told the Prophet that Zion can only be built upon principles of righteousness.  If the Saints want to become a “Zion people”, they must obey the laws of the celestial kingdom that the Lord had revealed.

初期の聖徒たちにとって、与えられた律法を受け入れ、それに従って生活することは困難でした。彼らは律法に従うことに苦労しており、その中には嫉妬や高慢、貪欲といった心の弱さもありました。

Those early Saints had great difficulty in accepting and living the laws that were given to them.  The Saints struggled to live the laws that were given to them. There was jealousy, pride, and covertness among the Saints.

聖徒たちの不従順の結果、主は彼らが受けることのできた祝福を与えることができませんでした。

As a result of the disobedience of the Saints, the Lord was not able to give them the blessings they could have received.  

私たちは初期の聖徒たちよりも立派でしょうか？本当にシオンの民になろうと望んでいるでしょうか？

Are we any better than those early Saints?  Are we seeking to become a Zion people?

あなたは、主が預言者や使徒を通して与えてくださる勧告に従っているでしょうか？忠実さを学んでいるでしょうか？

Do we follow the counsel that has been given to us by the Lord through his prophets and apostles?  Have we learned obedience?

シオンの民となるためには、多くの原則を学ぶ必要があります。主は福音の原則を私たちに明らかにしてくださり、それを学ぶ機会も与えてくださいます。その学び方には、易しい方法もあれば難しい方法もあります。

In order to become a Zion people, we need to learn many principles.  The Lord reveals principles of his gospel to us. He then gives us the opportunity to learn those principles the easy way or the hard way.  

残念なことに、易しく学べるはずの原則であっても、多くの人は難しい方法で学んでしまうのです。

While it is much easier to learn those principles the easy way, it is a sad fact that many of us choose the hard way.

易しい方法とは、預言者や使徒の勧告を受け入れ、教えられた通りに行うことです。それは時に、私たちの態度や行動を変えることを求められる場合もあります。しかし、高慢さのために、その教えを拒んでしまうこともあるのです。

The easy way is to accept the counsel of the prophets and apostles and do exactly what they teach us to do.  That often requires changes to our attitudes and behaviors. Because we are prideful, we sometimes reject those teachings.

そのため、私たちは忠実さを難しい方法で学ぶことになります。難しい方法とは、反抗的で頑固な態度を取ることです。真の勧告を受けていても、難しいとか変化が多すぎるといった理由で拒否してしまうのです。

So, we have to learn obedience the hard way.  The hard way is by being rebellious and stubborn.  Even though we have been given true counsel, we reject it as too difficult or requiring too many changes in our own behavior.

主の勧告を拒否し、自分の方法で行おうとすると、うまくいかないことが多くなります。問題に直面し、苦しむことになります。物事はうまく進まず、求めている幸せを見つけることもできません。

As we reject the counsel of the Lord and try our own way, things do not go well.  We suffer problems. We are not successful. We do not find the happiness we seek.  

結局のところ、私たちは頑固さを悔い改め、謙虚になり、従順を学ばなければなりません。そうすることで、約束されたすべての祝福を受けることができるのです。私たちは、結局「苦しむことによって」しか学べないのかもしれません。

Eventually, we have to repent of our stubbornness, humble ourselves, and learn to be obedient.  When we do that, we then receive all the promised blessings. It seems that we can only learn “by the things which we suffer”.

易しい方法、難しい方法。それは、私たち自身の選択にかかっているのです。

The easy way, or the hard way.  It is our choice. 

今週は、従順さを学ぶことを意識して過ごしましょう。シオンの民となることを学び、日の栄えの王国の律法に従って生活することを学びましょう。そして、主が示された易しい方法で行動しましょう。

As we go through this week, let’s learn to be obedient.  Let’s learn to be a Zion people. Let’s learn to live the law of the celestial kingdom.  Let’s do things the easy way.
