They were slow to harken to the voice of the Lord their God; therefore, the Lord their God is slow to harken unto their prayers, to answer them in the day of their trouble.  In the day of their peace they esteemed lightly my counsel; but, in the day of their trouble, of necessity they feel after me.  Doctrine & Covenants 101:7-8

この啓示が与えられた当時、ミズーリ州の教会員は大きな試練と迫害に直面していました。彼らはジャクソン郡の家から追放され、多くの人が財産、家畜、作物をすべて失いました。

During the time that this revelation was received, the members of the Church in Missouri were experiencing great trials and persecution.  They had been driven out of their homes in Jackson County and many had lost all their personal property, their livestock, and their crops.  

教義と聖約 101章で、主はこうした試練が起こった理由を説明されています。7節と8節では、ミズーリ州の教会員が、預言者ジョセフ・スミスを通して与えられた戒めを守らなかったことが示されています。

In Section 101 of the Doctrine and Covenants, the Lord explains why some of these trials were happening.  In verses 7 and 8, the Lord tells the Prophet Joseph Smith that the members in Missouri had not kept the commandments that had been given to them.  

彼らは「主の声に聞き従うのが遅かった」のです。彼らが不従順で、戒めを守らなかったために、主は必要な祝福を与えることがおできになりませんでした。

They had been “slow to harken to the voice of the Lord”.  Because of their disobedience and their failure to keep the commandments, the Lord was not able to give them the blessings they needed.

悲しいことに、今日でも同じ行動パターンが非常に多く見られます。教会員であっても、このサタンの誘惑に陥ってしまうことがあります。

Sadly, this same behavior pattern is still very common in the world today.  Even members of the Church fall into this temptation of Satan. 

生活が順調で、大きな試練や悩みがないとき、私たちは主を忘れがちです。戒めをすべて守らなくても幸せでいられると思い込み、自分の人生を自分で完全にコントロールしていると考えてしまいます。

When things are going smoothly in our lives, when we don’t have big trials or troubles, we tend to forget the Lord.  We think we can be happy without keeping all of the commandments.  We think that we are in control of our own lives.  

日々の祈りや聖文の読書を怠ります。教会の集会すべてに出席しない選択をしたり、召しに十分に励まなくなったりします。

We forget to say our prayers and to read the scriptures each day.  We choose to not attend all of our Church meetings.  We do not serve diligently in our callings.

これはサタンの罠です。彼は「それくらい大丈夫だ」と私たちの耳元でささやきます。祈りをやめさせ、聖典を読むのをやめさせ、教会に行くのをやめさせようとします。

This is a trick of Satan.  He whispers in our ears that all these things are okay. He wants us to stop saying our prayers.  He wants us to stop reading the scriptures.  He wants us to stop going to Church.

彼はこうした小さいけれど重要な事柄をやめさせようとします。そうすると、聖霊は常に私たちと共にいることができません。御霊の導きを失い、聖約の道から少しずつ離れてしまいます。

He wants us to stop doing these small things that are so important.  If we stop doing these small things, the Holy Ghost cannot be with us all the time.  If we stop doing these small things, we lose the guidance of the Spirit.  If we stop doing these small things, we start moving away from the covenant path.

そして、次の試練が突然襲ってくるとき、私たちはすぐに主の助けを求めます。問題や苦しみから即座に解放されたいと願います。

Then, when the next trial suddenly comes into our lives, we want the Lord to save us immediately.  We want instant relief from our problem.  We want to be freed from the trial right away. 

しかし、それは私たちの望むようにはいきません。約束された祝福を受けたいなら、小さなことを続けなければなりません。毎日祈り、毎日聖典を読み、教会のすべての集会に出席する必要があります。

But that is not how it works.  If we want to receive the promised blessings, we need to do the small things.  We need to say our prayers each day.  We need to read the scriptures each day.  We need to attend all of our Church meetings.

それでもなお、試練や困難は訪れます。それがこの世における計画の一部だからです。しかし、その中でも聖霊からなすべきことの導きを受けられます。主の御霊から力を受け、試練に耐え、必要な祝福をいただくことができます。私たちは自分の務めを果たさなければなりません。

We will still have trials and hardships.  That is part of plan for this life.  But we will be able to receive guidance from the Holy Ghost to know what to do.  We will receive strength from the Spirit of the Lord to be able to endure the trial.  We will be able to receive the blessings that we need.  We need to do our part.

新しい週を迎えるにあたり、ミズーリ州の初期の教会員が示した模範を心に留めましょう。戒めを守らなければ必要な祝福が受けにくくなることを忘れず、私たちを主に近づけ、祝福にふさわしくさせる「小さなこと」を怠らないようにしましょう。

As we go through this next week, let’s remember the example of those early members in Missouri.  Let’s remember that their failure to keep the commandments made it more difficult for them to receive the blessings that they needed.  Let’s remember to do the small things that will keep us close to the Lord and worthy to receive his blessings.
