Yea, verily, I say unto you, I gave unto you a commandment that you should build a house, in the which house I design to endow those whom I have chosen with power from on high; Doctrine & Covenants 95:8

教義と聖約の94章、95章、96章で、主はカートランドに新しい建物をいくつか建てるよう教会に指示を与えておられます。

In Sections 94, 95, and 96 of the Doctrine and Covenants, the Lord gives instructions to the Church about building some new buildings in Kirtland.  

たとえば、大管長会の執務用の建物や、聖典の翻訳を印刷するための印刷所、また教会の指導者たちの住居として使われる建物などを建てるように命じられています。

For example, the Church is commanded to build a building for the First Presidency to use as their office.  Another building is to be built as a printing shop, to print the translation of the scriptures.  Still other buildings are to be built as houses for some the Church leaders.

建物のような現実的な事柄についての指示は、少し奇妙に思えるかもしれません。建物は霊的なものとはあまり思えないかもしれません。それなのに、なぜこれらの指示が啓示の中に含まれているのでしょうか？

It may seem a little strange to us to see instructions about such mundane things as buildings.  Buildings are not very spiritual.  Why are these instructions included in the revelations?

これはすべて回復の一部なのです。当時の初期の教会員にとって、すべてが新しいものであったことを忘れてはなりません。今日私たちが理解しているように、彼らは教会の組織について未経験でした。教会がどのように組織されるべきか、彼らには分かっていませんでした。従うべき模範もなかったのです。すべては主から啓示を受ける必要がありました。

This is all part of the Restoration.  We need to remember that everything was new to those early members.  They had no experience with the organization of the Church as we know it today.  They did not know how the Church was to be organized.  There was no pattern for them to follow.  Everything had to come by revelation from the Lord.

初期の教会員は彼らの家と農場を手放してカートランドへ旅しました。彼らが到着したとき、カートランドはほんの小さな村でした。彼らは家族が住むための小さな家を建てなければなりませんでした。彼らは生きるために苦しい労働を強いられており、教会の建物の必要性についてまで考えていなかったことでしょう。

These early members had left their homes and farms and had traveled to Kirtland.  Kirtland was just a small village when they arrived.  They had to build small houses for their families to live in.  They had to work very hard and probably did not think about the need for Church buildings.

この聖句は、将来明らかにされる非常に重要な教義をもほのめかしています。主が神殿の必要性について語られるのはこれが初めてです。

This verse also contains a hint about a very important doctrine that was to be revealed in the future.  This is the first time that the Lord talks about the need for a temple.  

すべての神権時代で教会員を集める主な理由のひとつは神殿を建てることでした。最も神聖な儀式を執行できるのは神殿だけです。神殿でのみ、私たちは天からの力を受けることができます。神殿でのみ、私たちは永遠の家族として結び固められるのです。

One of the primary reasons for gathering the members of the Church in every dispensation has been to build a temple.  Only in a temple can the most sacred ordinances be administered.  Only in a temple can we be endowed with power from on high.  Only in a temple can we be sealed together as eternal families.

神殿を建てるには、まず完了すべきいくつかの段階がありました。それらの段階は、この啓示で言及された建物を建てることでした。大管長会が働く場所を提供し、主からの啓示を印刷することによって、人々は神殿の儀式に備えることができました。

In order to build a temple, there were other steps that needed to be completed first.  Some of those steps were to build the buildings mentioned in this revelation.  By providing a place for the First Presidency to work, and by printing the revelations from the Lord, the people could be prepared for the ordinances of the temple.

建物は霊的では無いように思えるかもしれませんが、特定の建物を建てる指示は非常に重要でした。これらの建物を利用できるようにすることで、教会員は神殿にさらに一歩近づきました。

While buildings may seem to be non-spiritual, the instructions to build certain buildings was very important.  By having these buildings available, the members of the Church advanced another step closer to the temple.  

最初の神殿の準備が整うまでには数年かかるのですが、主はすでに永遠の神殿から受ける祝福への道を準備しておられました。

It would be a few years before the first temple would be ready, but the Lord was already preparing the way for eternal temple blessings.  

主が私たちに何かをするように求めらる理由が理解できないかもしれません。しかし、主はその理由を確かにご存知です。主は私たちが一歩ずつでなければ前進できないことをご存知です。私たちがより霊的になるためには、生活の中で「いくつかの建物を建てる」必要があるのかもしれません。

We may not understand why the Lord asks us to do certain things.  But, the Lord understands why.  He knows that we must advance step by step.  We may need to “build some buildings” in our own lives so we can become more spiritual.  

新しい週が始まります。カートランドの初期の教会員の模範を忘れずに過ごしましょう。主が私たちに戒めをお与えになるとき、私たちはその戒めを守らなければならないことを忘れないでください。その理由が分からなくても、戒めに従うなら、私たちは常に安全でいられます。自分の生活の中で建てるように求められている「建物」は、やがて私たちにとっての「神殿」となることでしょう。

As we go through this next week, let’s remember the example of the early members of the Church in Kirtland.  Let’s remember that, when the Lord gives us a commandment, we must keep that commandment.  Even though we do not understand why something needs to be done, we will always be safe if we keep the commandments.  We may find that those “buildings” that we are told to build in our own lives will become a “temple” to us.
