「兄さんたち、もし兄さんたちが義にかなっていて、神の御前をまっすぐに歩めるように、進んで真理に聞き従い、それを心に留めるならば、その真理をためにつぶやいて、『おまえは我々に厳しいことを言った』 などとは言わないでしょう。」 ニーファイ第一章１６：３
And now my brethren, if ye were righteous and were willing to hearken to the truth, and give heed unto it, that ye might walk uprightly before God, then ye would not murmur because of the truth, and say: Thou speakest hard things against us. 1 Nephi 16:3
Prior to this scripture, Nephi had been teaching his older brothers about the Tree of Life vision. He taught them that the wicked who reject the fruit of the Tree, or in other words, who reject the gospel, would not be able to enter into the kingdom of God. They would be cut off from the “greatest of all the gifts of God”.
この聖句より前で、ニーファイは兄たちに命の木の示現について教えていました。彼は木の実を拒絶した邪悪な者、つまり福音を拒絶した者が神の王国には入れないと教えました。彼らは「神のすべての贈り物の最も素晴らしいもの」から断ち切られるのです。
His brothers were not happy. They did not like what he said to them. They were angry with Nephi and said, “Thou hast declared unto us hard things, more than we are able to bear”.
兄たちは嬉しく思いませんでした。ニーファイが語った言葉が気に入らず、彼らはニーファイに怒って「おまえは我々が聞くに堪えないほど厳しいことを言った」と文句を言いました。
Basically, Laman and Lemuel did not want to make any changes in their lives. They did not want to make an effort to improve. They did not want Nephi to tell them that they were on the wrong path.
要するにレーマンとレムエルは自分の生活を変えたくなかったのです。改善する努力などしたくはなく、弟のニーファイから彼らが間違った道を歩んでいるなどと言われたくなかったのです。
But Nephi was telling them the truth. He was not trying to force his brothers to do what he wanted, but rather to do what the Lord wanted. The commandments did not come from Nephi. The commandments came from the Lord.
しかしニーファイは彼らに真実を述べていました。ニーファイは兄たちに彼の望んでいることさせようと思ったのではありません。むしろ主の望みを行ってほしかったのです。戒めはニーファイからではなく主から来るものでした。
Before we judge Laman and Lemuel for being wicked, we need to stop and think about our own lives. Are we more like Nephi or more like Laman and Lemuel? Maybe we are mostly like Nephi, but sometimes we can be like Laman and Lemuel.
さて、私たちがレーマンやレムエルの邪悪さを裁く前に、自分自身の普段の行いを立ち止まって考えてみる必要があります。私たちはニーファイのようですか、それともレーマンやレムエルのようでしょうか？おそらくニーファイのようでしょうが、レーマンやレムエルのような時もあるかもしれません。
For example, in recent General Conferences, our prophet, the members of the First Presidency, and the members of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles have taught us many new things. Many of the things that we were comfortable with have been changed. Many new challenges have been given to us.
たとえば、最近の総大会で預言者や大管長会、十二使徒定員会のメンバーが多くの新しいことを教えられました。今まで私たちが心地よく感じていた多くの事柄が変更されました。多くの新しいチャレンジも与えられました。
Are we going to be like Nephi, or like Laman and Lemuel?
あなたはニーファイのようになりますか、それともレーマンやレムエルのようになりますか？
One of the big changes was the replacement of the home teaching and visiting teaching programs with the new ministering program. With the old programs, we didn’t really have to do much work. Yes, we had to visit some families, but not much more than that.
大きな変更のひとつに、ホームティーチングと家庭訪問が新しくミニスタリングというプログラムに置き換わりました。古いプログラムでは私たちは今ほど働く必要はありませんでした。確かに何件か家族を訪問してはいましたがより一層の愛と関心を示すことは少なかったです。
Now, with the new ministering program, we are expected to use our own initiative to find ways to minister to our families. We are expected to seek the Spirit’s guidance to understand how to serve our families. We are expected to be true ministers, not just visitors.
今、ミニスタリングのプログラムになって私たちは担当家族をミニスタリングする方法を自発的に見いだすように期待されています。担当家族にどのように仕えるか御霊の導きを求めるよう期待されています。単なる訪問者ではなく神の代理人となるよう期待されています。
Another major change was the elimination of the third hour of regular Sunday Church meetings. Before, unless you had an assignment to teach a class, you could just sit back and listen to someone teach. It did not require much effort on our part. We did not have to think, ponder, plan, or prepare. We could just sit there and listen.
他にも大きな変更がありました。日曜日の３時間目の定例集会がなくなりました。以前はクラスで教える責任がない限り、誰かが教えるのをただ座って聞いているだけでも良かったのです。私たちがすべきことはそんなに要求されませんでした。考え、熟考し、計画し、準備する必要もありませんでした。ただ座って聞いているだけでもよかったのです。
Now, we have been instructed that we need to use the extra hour we have on Sunday to teach ourselves and our family members in the home. We have been given an excellent manual, Church videos, and instruction on how to teach in the Savior’s way. We have been promised that following this new program will bless our own lives and the lives of our family members.
今、私たちは日曜日の空いた時間を使って個人や家族と福音を学ぶ時間を取るよう指導を受けています。よく準備された教科書や教会のビデオがあります。救い主の方法でどのように教えるべきか学ぶ機会もあります。この新しいプログラムに従うとき私たちや家族の人生が祝福されるという約束を受けています。
Are we going to be like Nephi, or like Laman and Lemuel?
あなたはニーファイのようになりますか、それともレーマンやレムエルのようになりますか？
Are we going to accept the counsel from prophets and apostles or are we going to say that it is too hard?
あなたは預言者や使徒たちの勧告を受け入れますか？それともそれは難しすぎると苦情を言いますか？
Whether your family consists of parents and children, only one parent and children, only parents, or even only you, the Come, Follow Me material can be a great blessing in our lives. As we do our best to follow the counsel that has been given to us, we will receive the great blessings that have been promised.
あなたがたがどのような家族構成であろうと「私に従ってきなさい」の資料は私たちの日々の生活に大きな祝福をもたらしてくれます。私たちに与えられたその勧告に最善を尽くして従うなら私たちは約束された大きな祝福を受けることでしょう。
As we go through this next week, let’s try to be more like Nephi and less like Laman and Lemuel. Let’s be willing to follow the counsel given to us in General Conference. Let’s make our own homes the center of gospel teaching.
来週、生活を送る時、レーマンやレムエルではなくニーファイのようになるよう努めましょう。総大会で与えられた勧告に喜んで従いましょう。自分の家庭を福音学習の中心の場所にしましょう。
