また、一つの戒めを、わたしは彼らに与える。すなわち、祈るべきときに主の前に祈りをすることを守らない者が、わたしの民の判士の前に覚えられるようにしなさい。教義と聖約６８：３３
And now a commandment I give unto them — that he that observeth not his prayers before the Lord in the season thereof, let him be had in remembrance before the judge of my people. Doctrine & Covenants 68:33
この啓示は、1831年に預言者ジョセフ・スミスに与えられたもので、私たちイエス・キリストに従う者にとっての義務を明確に教えています。
This revelation, given to the Prophet Joseph Smith in 1831, contains a very clear explanation of our duties as followers of Jesus Christ.
この中で私たちは、常に祈るように戒められています。聖典の多くの箇所でも、同じ戒めが繰り返し教えられています。
In this revelation we are given a commandment to pray always. This is the very same commandment that is given many other times in the scriptures.
実際、新約聖書には16回、モルモン書には18回、そして教義と聖約には43回もこの戒めが記されています。
In fact, this same commandment is given 16 times in the New Testament, 18 times in the Book of Mormon, and 43 times in the Doctrine & Covenants.
これほど頻繁に繰り返されているということは、次の二つのことを意味していると考えられます。
Because it is given to us so many times, we can draw 2 conclusions.
一つ目は、この戒めが非常に重要であるということ。
One, it must be a very important commandment.
そしてもう一つは、私たちがこの戒めを十分には守れていないということです。
Two, we don’t do a very good job of keeping this commandment.
天の御父に祈ることができるのは、本当に素晴らしい祝福です。私たちは日々の決断において導きを求めることができます。自分自身、家族、友人のために助けを願い求めることができます。そして、サタンの誘惑に打ち勝つ力も、祈りによって受けることができるのです。
It is a great blessing to be able to pray to our Heavenly Father. It is through prayer that we can receive guidance for the decisions we make each day. It is through prayer that we can obtain help for ourselves, our families, and our friends. It is through prayer that we can gain strength to resist the temptations of Satan.
私たちは皆、祈りが大切だということを知っています。それでも、なぜ私たちはときどき祈ることを忘れてしまうのでしょうか？
We all know that. We all know that prayer is important. So why is it so hard sometimes to remember to pray?
それは、サタンが祈りの力をよく知っているからです。彼は私たちが祈ることを望まず、私たちが祝福を受けることや、幸せになることを妨げようとします。そのため、祈らなくてもよいと私たちを必死に説得しようとするのです。
Satan also knows how powerful pray can be. He does not want us to pray. He does not want us to receive blessings. He does not want us to be happy. So he works very hard to convince us not to pray.
私たちは毎日、イエス・キリストに従うか、それともサタンに従うかという選択をしています。イエス・キリストに従いたいのなら、主が教えられたことを行う必要があります。その一つが、「毎日祈ること」なのです。
We need to choose each day whether we will follow Jesus Christ or follow Satan. If we want to follow Jesus Christ, we must do those things that he has taught us. We must say our prayers each day.
祈りは長くある必要はありません。決まった言葉を繰り返す必要も、型どおりに暗記したものを唱える必要もありません。
Prayers do not have to be long. Prayers do not have to have the same words each time. Prayers do not have to be formal or memorized.
むしろ、両親や友人と会話をするように、天の御父と話すべきです。天の御父は実在され、私たちの祈りを確かにお聞きになります。心にある重荷や願いを御父に打ち明け、また、日々の恵みに感謝する機会にしましょう。
Rather, when we pray, we should talk to Heavenly Father just as we would talk to our own parents or our own friends. Heavenly Father is real and he does listen to our prayers. We can share with him our deepest desires and our burdens. We should always remember to thank Heavenly Father for all the wonderful blessings that we receive each day.
祈りは、必ず答えられます。
Prayers are answered.
それは、天使が現れるという意味ではありません。祈ったその瞬間に答えがくるとも限りませんし、自分が望んでいるとおりの形で答えが来るとも限りません。
That does not mean that an angel will appear. It does not mean that the answer will come immediately. It does not mean that the answer will be exactly what we want.
しかし、天の御父は私たちの祈りを聞いておられ、御父が最も良いと考えられる時に、御父の方法で、最善の答えを与えてくださいます。御父は私たちにとって何が本当に良いのかをご存知なのです。ときには、私たちが成長するために試練や困難を経験することも必要になります。
It does mean that Heavenly Father hears our prayers and will always answer them in his own time and in his own way. He knows what is best for us. Sometimes, we need to go through some trials or difficulties in order to learn.
今週は、祈ることを忘れないように心がけましょう。一人で祈ることもできますし、夫婦で共に祈ることも、家族みんなで祈ることもできます。この一週間を「祈りの週」として過ごしてみましょう。そのとき、主が約束されたすべての祝福を、私たちが確かに受けることができると信じています。
Let’s focus on remembering to say our prayers this week. We can pray as individuals. We can pray as couples. We can pray as families. Let’s make this week a week of pray. I know if we do this, we will receive all the promised blessings.
