見よ、わたしがすべてのことを命じるのは適切ではない。すべてのことを強いられて行う者は怠惰であって、賢い僕ではない。したがって彼は報いを受けない。教義と聖約５８：２６

For behold, it is not meet that I should command in all things; for he that is compelled in all things, the same is a slothful and not a wise servant; wherefore he receiveth no reward.  Doctrine & Covenants 58:26

この聖句は1831年、預言者と少数の教会員がミズーリ州ジャクソン郡に到着したときに、預言者ジョセフ・スミスにより与えられたものです。この啓示の中で、主は教会員にある大切な指示を与えられました。

This scripture was given through the Prophet Joseph Smith in 1831, when the Prophet and a small group of members arrived in Jackson County, Missouri.  In this revelation, the Lord gave the members of the Church some important instructions.

この聖句から、主が私たちに自由意思を用いるよう望んでおられることを思い起こさせてくれます。私たちは人生のすべての細かな選択や決定について、逐一命じられるわけではないのです。

In this scripture, we are reminded that the Lord expects us to use our own free agency.  We are told that we will not be given commandments for every small detail and decision in our lives.  

初期の教会には、主の言葉に従い、主の勧告に忠実でいたいという強い思いがありました。それ自体はすばらしいことです。しかし、啓示がどのように働くのかについて、理解が不十分な会員もいました。

In the early days of the Church, there was a strong desire to follow the word of the Lord and to be obedient to his counsel.  This was a good thing.  However, some members of the Church did not understand how revelation works.

預言者は重要な事柄について主から啓示を受けるため、一部の会員たちは、すべての事柄について主が啓示を与えて下さると期待するようになってしまいました。主が命じられない限り、何も行動しようとしなかったのです。

Because the Prophet could receive revelation from the Lord on important things, some members of the Church began to expect the Lord to give them revelation about everything.  They did not do anything unless the Lord told them to do it.  

しかしその考え方には問題があります。それは、自由意志という大切な原則に反してしまうからです。主は私たちを愛しておられ、人生において導いてくださいます。しかし、だからといって、何を、いつ、どのように行うかをすべて細かく教えてくださるわけではありません。

The problem with that idea is that it violates the principle of free agency.  The Lord loves us and wants to give us direction in our lives.  However, that does not mean that we will be told exactly what to do, when to do it, and how to do it.  

主は私たちに原則と指針を与えてくださいます。そして私たちは、その原則と指針を使って、自らの判断で選択し、行動することが期待されています。もし、明確な指示がないという理由で何もしなければ、私たちは「怠惰であって、賢くない僕」となってしまいます。

The Lord gives us principles and guidelines.  We are then expected to use those principles and guidelines to help us make decisions.  If we do not do anything without specific instructions, we are a “slothful and not a wise servant”.  

たとえば、子供のころよく、親から服を片付けるように、部屋を掃除するように、家の手伝いをするように何度も言われた経験があると思います。でも、何も言われなくても自分から行動していたら、きっと親はとても喜んでくれたことでしょう。

When we were children, our parents often had to remind us to pick up our dirty clothes, to clean our room, or to do our chores.  I am sure our parents would have been very happy if we had done all those things without being told to do them.  

同じように、主も私たちが毎日の「やるべきこと」を、具体的な啓示がなくても進んで行ってくれることを望んでおられます。すでに正しい原則を教えられているので、その知識をどう活かすかが大切なのです。

In the same way, the Lord expects us to do our own “chores” each day without specific revelation telling us to do them.  We have been taught true principles.  It is what we do with that knowledge that is important.  

主から与えられた知識に基づいて行動するとき、私たちは経験を通して正しい選択の仕方を学んでいきます。時には間違った選択をしてしまうこともありますが、そこからも「すべての行動には結果がある」ということを学ぶことができます。もし私たちが、啓示が与えられたときだけしか行動しないなら、成長する機会や選択の結果を学ぶ機会を失ってしまうのです。

By acting on the knowledge that the Lord has given us, we learn through our own experiences to make good choices.  We learn from making bad choices that there are consequences to every action.  If we only did something when the Lord gave us a revelation, we would not have the opportunity to grow or to learn about the consequences that come from making choices.  

私たちは毎日、良い選択をする機会に恵まれています。毎日、誰かを助け、仕える機会があります。毎日、戒めを守る機会があります。

There are opportunities every day for us to make good choices.  There are opportunities every day for us to serve others.  There are opportunities every day for us to keep the commandments.

この一週間、私たちが子どもではなく、大人として行動することを決意しましょう。自由意志というすばらしい原則を用いて、学び、成長していきましょう。そして、誰かに強いられることなく、自ら進んで良いことを行う決意をしましょう。

As we go through this week, let’s resolve to be adults, not children.  Let’s resolve to use the wonderful principle of free agency to grow and to learn.  Let’s resolve to take action and to do good things without being compelled.

私たちが自由意志を用いて、良い選択をし、困っている人に親切を示し、イエス・キリストの弟子としてふさわしく生きるとき、きっと主の祝福を受けることができると、私は知っています。

I know that we will be blessed as we use the principle of free agency to make good choices, to do good to those in need, and to be better examples of followers of Jesus Christ.
