しかし見よ、まことに、まことに、わたしはあなたに言う。わたしの僕ジョセフ・スミス・ジュニアのほかに、だれもこの教会で戒めと啓示を受けるために任命される者はない。彼はモーセのように戒めと啓示を受けるからである。教義と聖約　２８：２

But behold, verily, verily, I say unto thee, no one shall be appointed to receive commandments and revelations in this church excepting my servant Joseph Smith, Jun., for he receiveth them even as Moses.  Doctrine & Covenants 28:2

初期の教会では、会員は教会の仕組みや組織について学び始めたばかりでした。彼らはジョセフ・スミスを預言者として認め、彼が啓示を受けたことを理解していましたが、中には自分たちも啓示を受けられると考える人がいました。

In the early days of the Church, members were just starting to learn about how the Church worked and how it was organized.  While they all recognized Joseph Smith as a prophet and understood that he received revelation, some members thought that they could receive revelation as well.  

彼らが正しく理解していなかったことは、すべての会員は個人のために啓示を受けることはできても、教会全体のために啓示を受けることができるのは預言者だけだということでした。

What those individuals did not understand correctly was that while every member can receive revelation for their own individual needs, only the Prophet can receive revelation for the entire Church.

ハイラム・ページという名の会員は、サタンにだまされ教会全体の啓示を受けていると信じていました。天からの使者を見たオリバー・カウドリでさえ、ハイラム・ページに惑わされてしまいました。

A member by the name of Hyrum Page was tricked by Satan into believing that he was receiving revelation for the entire Church.  Even Oliver Cowdery, who has seen heavenly messengers, was deceived by Hyrum Page.

教義と聖約のこの章で、主は聖徒にこの原則について教えておられます。

In this Section of the Doctrine & Covenants, the Lord teaches the Saints about this principle.

預言者ジョセフ・スミスを通してオリバー・カウドリに与えられたこの啓示の中で、主は、預言者だけが教会全体のための啓示を受ける権限があると明確に述べておられます。

In this revelation, given to Oliver Cowdery through the Prophet Joseph Smith, the Lord clearly states that only the Prophet is authorized to receive revelation for the entire Church.  

今日、私たちはこの原則を理解しており、預言者が教会を導き、教会全体のための啓示を受けるのは言者だけであることを知っています。

We understand this principle today.  We all know that the Prophet leads and guides the Church and that only the Prophet receives revelation for the entire Church.  

また、預言者が受けた新しい教義や啓示を受けた場合、それが教会に発表される前に、預言者と大管長会、十二使徒定員会全員がそれについて話し合い、検討し、祈りをもって確認することも知っています。 

We also know that before any new doctrine or revelation received by the Prophet is announced to the Church, the Prophet, the members of the First Presidency, and the members of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles all have discussed, reviewed, and prayed about it.  

教会のための新しい指示は、預言者と大管長会、十二使徒定員会の全会一致の合意があって初めて発表されるのです。

It is only after the unanimous agreement of the Prophet, the First Presidency, and the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles that new instructions are announced for the Church.

最近、私たちは「家庭中心教会サポート」の福音教育と「わたしに従ってきなさい」プログラムの発表を通してこの原則が実際に機能しているかを目の当たりにしました。

Recently, we saw this principle in action with the announcements of “home-centered, Church-supported” gospel teaching and of the “Come, Follow Me” program.

生ける預言者と使徒がいることは、なんと慰めであり祝福でしょう。私たちは彼らが真実を教えると信頼しています。彼らに従うならば、私たちは主の道に導かれることを知っています。彼らの勧告に耳を傾け、それに従うならば、私たちは聖約の道にとどまれることを知っています。

What a comfort and blessing it is to have living prophets and apostles.  We know we can trust them to teach us the truth.  We know that if we follow them, we will be guided in the ways of the Lord.  We know that if we listen and follow their counsel, we will stay on the covenant path.

しかし、主は私たちが盲目的に従うことを望んでおられるわけではありません。預言者や使徒たちが教えていることに耳を傾けるよう期待されています。そして、それが正しいかどうかよく考えるよう期待されています。最後に、祈りによって、教えられたことが真実であるかどうかの確証を求めることが期待されています。

But the Lord does not want us to follow blindly.  We are expected to listen to what the prophets and apostles are teaching.  We are then expected to think about what has been taught to see if it seems right.  Finally, we are expected to pray and ask for confirmation that what we have been taught is true.  

そうすれば、教えられたことの真実性についての自分の証を得ることができます。預言者と使徒たちが主の戒めを教えていることを私たちは自分自身で知ることができます。私たちは、主が望んでいるおられることを行っているのだと、自分自身で知ることができます。

If we do this, we will be able to receive our own testimonies of the truthfulness of what we have been taught.  We will be able to know for ourselves that the prophets and apostles have taught us the commandments of the Lord.  We will be able to know for ourselves that we are doing what the Lord wants us to do.

新しい週が始まります。私たちを教え導く生ける預言者と使徒がいることを心に留めて過ごしましょう。総大会で伝えられる彼らのメッセージを学ぶことは、私たちの大切な務めです。教えられたことについて研究し、熟考し、祈る必要があることを忘れないでください。不安や疑いに満ちたこの世であっても、私たちは主が望まれることを行っているという確信と希望を持って前進しましょう。

As we go through this next week, let’s remember that we have living prophets and apostles to teach us.  Let’s remember that we have a duty to study their words in the General Conference messages.  Let’s remember that we need to study, ponder, and pray about what we have been taught.  Let’s remember that, even in this world of uncertainty and doubt, we can have an absolute assurance that we are doing what the Lord wants us to do.
