。。。わたし自分の真上に、太陽の輝きにも勝って輝いている光の柱を見た。そして、その光の柱は次第に降りて来て、光はついにわたしに降り注いだ。それが現れるやいなや、わたしが身を縛った敵から救い出されたのに気づいた。そして、その光がわたしの上にとどまったとき、わたしは筆紙に尽くし難い輝きと栄光を持つ二人の御方がわたしの上の空中に立っておられるのを見た。すると、そのうちの御一方がわたしに語りかけ、私の名を呼び、別の御方を指して、「これはわたしの愛する子である。彼に聞きなさい」と言われた。ジョセフ・スミす１:１６−１７

… I saw a pillar of light, exactly over my head, above the brightness of the sun, which descended gradually until it fell upon me. It no sooner appeared than I found myself delivered from the enemy which held me bound.  When the light rested upon me I saw two personages, whose brightness and glory defy all description, standing above me in the air.  One of them spake unto me, calling me by name and said, pointing to the other, “This is is my Beloved Son.  Hear him!” Joseph Smith History 1:16-17

今年教会歴史の研究を始めるにあたり、この神権時代の最も重要な出来事から始めるのが適切です。実際、それは人類の歴史全体の中で最も重要な出来事の一つです。

As we begin our study of Church History this year, it is fitting that we begin with the most important event of this dispensation.  In fact, it is one of the most important events in the entire history of mankind.

1820 年のある美しい春の朝、若きジョセフ・スミスは祈りを捧げるために森へ行きました。森から出てきたとき、世界が完全に変わることになるとは、彼は知らなかった。

On a beautiful spring morning in the year of 1820, young Joseph Smith went into the woods to pray.  Little did he know that when he came out of the woods, the world would be changed completely.  

若いジョセフは、どの教会が自分にとって正しい教会なのかを知りたいと思っていました。彼は真の教会を見つけるために様々な教会を訪問し、聖書を学びました。彼は自分一人では真実を知ることはできないと判断した。新約聖書のヤコブの手紙第1章5節を読んだ後、彼は神に導きを求める必要があることに気づきました。

Young Joseph wanted to know which Church was the right one for him to join.  He visited different Churches and studied the Bible, seeking to find the True Church.  He decided that he could not know the truth by himself.  After reading a scripture in the New Testament, James 1:5, he realized that he needed to ask God for guidance.

その日、彼がひざまずいて祈ると、サタンは激しく彼を攻撃し、祈りを終えるのを妨害しようとしました。サタンはジョセフが祈ったり、知識を得たりすることを望みませんでした。サタンは福音の回復を阻止しようとしました。しかし、若いジョセフは諦めず、サタンの攻撃に苦しみながらも祈り続けました。

As he knelt to pray that day, Satan viciously attacked him and tried to prevent him from completing his prayer.  Satan did not want Joseph to pray or to receive any knowledge.  Satan tried to stop the Restoration of the Gospel.  Young Joseph did not give up though, and continued to pray even while suffering under the attacks of Satan.

諦めようとしたその時、彼は頭上に光の柱を見た。この光の柱が現れるとすぐに、彼はサタンの攻撃から解放されました。彼は空中に二人の人物が立っているのを見た。一人がもう一人を指差して言いました。「これは私の愛する子です。彼の言うことを聞きなさい。」

Just when he was ready to give up, he saw a pillar of light above his head.  As soon as this pillar of light appeared, he was freed from Satan’s attack.  He saw two personages standing above him in the air.  One pointed to the other and said, “This is my Beloved Son.  Hear him!”

これらの言葉とともに、偉大な時満ちる神権時代が始まりました。ジョセフは救い主にどの教会に加わるべきか尋ねましたが、どの教会にも加わるべきではないと言われました。ジョセフは真の教会と神権の権能が失われたことを知りました。彼は真の教会、神権、そして救いの儀式を地上に回復するために召されたと告げられました。

With those words, the great Dispensation of the Fulness of Times began.  Joseph asked the Savior which Church he should join and was told that he should join none of them.   Joseph learned that the True Church and priesthood authority had been lost.  He was told that he had been called to restore the True Church, the priesthood, and the ordinances of salvation to the earth.

その瞬間から、サタンは預言者を攻撃し、迫害し始めました。サタンはジョセフを失敗させるために全力を尽くしました。しかしジョセフは確固とした証を持ち続け、直面しなければならなかった恐ろしい試練に屈しませんでした。

Almost from that moment on, Satan attacked and persecuted the Prophet.  Satan tried everything in his power to make Joseph fail.  But Joseph was firm in his testimony and did not give in to the terrible trials he had to face.  

預言者ジョセフ・スミスを通して、私たち一人一人に希望があります。私たち一人一人は知識を持っています。わたしたち一人一人には救いの儀式を受ける機会があります。

Through the Prophet Joseph Smith, each one of us has hope.  Each one of us has knowledge.  Each one of us has the opportunity to receive the ordinances of salvation.  

人類の救済のために預言者ジョセフ・スミス以上に尽力したのは、救い主イエス・キリストだけです。彼の義なる努力により、神権の鍵が回復されました。天が開かれ、神は再び選ばれた預言者たちに語りかけます。現在，神殿は世界中に存在し，ますます多くの天の御父の子供たちに救いの儀式をもたらしています。

Only our Savior Jesus Christ has done more for the salvation of mankind than the Prophet Joseph Smith. Through his righteous efforts, the keys of the priesthood have been restored.  The heavens have been opened and God once again speaks to his chosen prophets.  Temples now are found all around the world, bringing the ordinances of salvation to more and more of Heavenly Father’s children.

預言者ジョセフ・スミスの努力と試練を通して、モルモン書は神の力と権能によって翻訳されました。モルモン書は救い主についてのもう一つの証であり、神の言葉です。現在の預言者ラッセル・M・ネルソン大管長は，モルモン書を毎日読む必要があることをわたしたちに常に思い出させてきました。

It was through the efforts and trials of the Prophet Joseph Smith that The Book of Mormon was translated by the power and authority of God.  The Book of Mormon is another testament of our Savior and is the word of God.  Our current prophet, President Russell M. Nelson, has consistently reminded us that we need to read from The Book of Mormon every day.

今週と新年を迎えるにあたり、預言者ジョセフ・スミスと彼の試練と苦難を常に思い出しましょう。彼がそれらの試練と困難にもかかわらず成し遂げた偉大なことを思い出しましょう。聖餐を受けるときや神殿に参入するとき，あるいはモルモン書を読むとき，わたしたちがそれらのことを行えるのは預言者ジョセフ・スミスのおかげであるということを覚えておきましょう。彼の偉大な名が永遠に祝福されますように。

As we go through this week and this new year, let’s always remember the Prophet Joseph Smith, his trials and his hardships.  Let’s remember the great things that he accomplished in spite of those trials and hardships.  Let’s remember as we take the sacrament or attend the Temple, or read from The Book of Mormon, that we are able to do those things only because of the Prophet Joseph Smith.  May his great name be blessed forever.
