Let’s continue our discussion about the amazing things that we find in the Book of Ether.
The Book of Ether is a history of a people called the Jaredites. The Jaredite history begins at the Tower of Babel, when the Lord changed the languages of the people. The story is told from the perspective of a man named Jared. Jared’s brother was a great prophet and the leader of this group of people. The Jaredites were led by the Lord across the steppes of Central Asia and eventually to the American continent.
As we begin to learn about the history of the people of Central Asia, we find remarkable parallels in the history of the Jaredites. We find kings fighting against kings, kings taken captive but not killed, kings and their families living for many generations in captivity. All these strange things keep coming up in the history of Central Asia and in the history of the Jaredites.
We mentioned in the last discussion that the people known in The Book of Mormon as Mulekites were the nearest neighbors to the Jaredite people. We do not know if the Mulekites and the Jaredites had any contact with each other. However, we do know that the Jaredite traditions that came into The Book of Mormon came through the Mulekites.
For example, there are a number of Jaredite names that show up in the Nephite record. This is strange, since the Jaredites and the Nephites spoke completely different languages and never had any direct contact with each other.
One characteristic of the most ancient languages that we know about is that many words end with the letter “m”. There are several words in the Jaredite record that Moroni was not able to translate into his own language. For example, “curelom” and “cumom” describe animals that were known to the Jaredites but not to the Nephites. Moroni had to use the Jaredite name for these animals, since he does not know what they were. He also leaves untranslated the name of a very high mountain, “shelem”, which he cannot translate.
It is interesting to note that there are several individuals in the Nephite record who have distinctly Jaredite names. These names include Morianton, Korihor, Nehor, Gadianton, and Coriantumr. The surprising thing is that all of the men who have Jaredite names are all Mulekites. They are also all wicked individuals who lead rebellions against the Nephite government and Church.
There are some people who claim that the Jaredite record cannot be true because it mentions things like steel and glass. Those people say that those items were not invented until very recent history. They are wrong. They do not study history.
We continue to find references to steel as new records of the ancient Egyptians, Babylonians, and peoples from Central Asia are discovered. All of these records seem to point back to Central Asia as the center of iron and steel technology. Given that the Jaredites spent many years in their travels across Central Asia, it is not surprising to learn that they knew about steel.
What about glass? Surely that is a very recent invention. And yet, when the brother of Jared asks the Lord how they can have light inside the barges, the Lord says they cannot have windows. In recent years, examples of glass have been found in Egypt and in pre-historic graves. The history of Central Asia is full of legends about glass mountains, glass palaces, and glass windows. The explorer Marco Polo wrote in his account that he saw glass windows on boats and barges in China. Like steel, the various accounts of glass all seem to point back to Central Asia as the origin of glass.
The account of the Jaredites is truly an amazing history. We have only touched lightly on a few of these interesting things. Things that were once thought of as silly legends are now being shown as actual fact. As these new discoveries are made, the truthfulness of the Jaredite record is strengthened.
How did Joseph Smith know about all those things? How did he know about Jaredite names, about strange animals, about steel and glass? The Prophet Joseph Smith did not know about any of those things. He did not need to know about them. He did not write the history of the Jaredites. He simply translated those records by the power and authority of God. He was called by God to be the prophet through whom God could restore the true gospel, the keys of the priesthood, and the ordinances of salvation. I so testify.

例えば、ニーファイ人の記録にはヤレド人の名前が数多く登場します。これは奇妙なことです。なぜなら、ヤレド人とニーファイ人は全く異なる言語を話し、互いに直接接触したことは一度もなかったからです。
