ある人々が肉体にも霊にも大いに価値があると思うことを、ほかの人々が何とも思わないで足の下に踏みつけることがある。まことに、イスラエルのまことの神ですら人々は足の下に踏みつける。足の下に踏みつけると言ったが言い換えれば、彼らは神を取るに足りない者として、その勧めの声に聞き従わないということである。　ニーファイ第一章１９：７

For the things which some men esteem to be of great worth, both to body and soul, others set at naught and trample under their feet.  Yea, even the very God of Israel do men trample under their feet; I say trample under their feet but I would speak in other words — they set him at naught, and harken not to the voice of his counsels.  1 Nephi 19:7

In the 19th chapter of 1 Nephi, Nephi explains why he works so hard to write his messages on the plates.  He tells us that he was commanded by the Lord to make a second record of his people. The second record, which we call the Small Plates of Nephi, contain those things that Nephi considers to be most sacred and most important.

第１ニーファイ19章ではニーファイがどうしてそんなに熱心にメッセージを版に書き残すのかを説明しています。彼の民について二つ目の記録を残すよう主から命じられたと述べています。ニーファイの小版と呼ばれる二つ目の版にはニーファイが最も神聖で大切だと思う事柄が含まれています。

In verse 7, Nephi laments that some people will not consider the sacred things to be important.  He likens their disrespect for the gospel principles to “trampling them under their feet”. In other words, they hear the words of the Lord, but do not think they are important and do not follow them.

第7節では、ニーファイが神聖な事柄を大切に思わない者がいることを嘆き悲しんでいます。彼らが福音の教えを敬わない態度を「足の下に踏みつける」ことに例えています。言い換えれば、彼らは主の言葉を聞くけれど、それが大切だと思わずその教えに従わないということです。

(Another interesting example of this comes from Japan.  In the 1600’s, the rulers of Japan attempted to stamp out Christianity in Japan.  Anyone who was found to be a Christian was tortured and killed. To prove that they were not Christian, people were required to step on a picture of the Virgin Mary.)

日本には興味深い歴史上の出来事があります。1600 年代の日本の支配者はクリスチャンを弾圧しようとしました。クリスチャンと分かったものは拷問を受け殺されました。クリスチャンでないことを証明するために聖母マリアの絵を踏むよう強要されました。

Are we sometimes like those who “trample the word of God” under our feet?

私たちも時として「神の言葉を足の下に踏みつける」彼らと似てはいませんか？

We have just participated in another wonderful General Conference.  Many of us were able to view some or even all of the sessions. For many of us, General Conference is something that we “esteem to be of great worth”.  We look forward to General Conference and faithfully study the messages of Conference.

私たちはすばらしい総大会に参加したばかりです。あなたもセッションのすべてかその幾つかを観たことでしょう。私たちにとって総大会は「大いに価値がある」ことです。私たちは総大会を、そしてそのメッセージを熱心に研究することを楽しみにしています。

For others, General Conference happens without them even knowing about it.  It is not an important event to them. They miss out on receiving the light and knowledge that come from Conference.

総大会が開催されることすら知らない人もいます。彼らにとっては何ら大切な出来事ではありません。残念ながら大会で得られる光や知識を彼らは受けることが出来ません。

Even for those who do participate in General Conference, there is still the question of what happens after Conference.  

総大会に参加する者でも大会後何をすべきかわからないことがあります。

Do we consider the messages of Conference to be important?  Do we make changes in our lives to become better disciples of Jesus Christ?  Do we follow the counsel that we are given at Conference? Do we “esteem them to be of great worth”?

大会のメッセージが大切であると理解してますか？イエス・キリストのより良い弟子となるよう生活を変えたいと思っていますか？大会で受けた勧告に従いたいと思っていますか？それが「大いに価値があると思って」いますか？

During this next week, let’s take time to study and review the messages of Conference.  Let’s not “trample them under our feet”. Let’s “esteem them to be of great worth” and use them to improve and become a true follower of our Savior Jesus Christ.

今週は大会でのメッセージを復習し研究してみましょう。それを「足の下に踏みつける」ことのないようにしましょう。それらを「大いに価値がある」ものと受け止め、進歩し、救い主イエス・キリストの真の従者となるよう努めましょう。
