さて、愛するわが子よ、彼らがかたくなであっても、わたしたちは力を尽くそう。働くことをやめれば、わたしたちは罪の宣告を受けるに違いない。わたしたちには、あらゆる義の敵を打ち破って、神の王国で安息を得るために、この土の幕屋に宿っている間に果たさなければならない務めがあるからである。モロナイ書９：６

And now, my beloved son, notwithstanding their hardness, let us labor diligently; for if we cease to labor, we shall be brought under condemnation; for we have a labor to perform whilst in this tabernacle of clay, that we may conquer the enemy of all righteousness, and rest our souls in the kingdom of God.  Moroni 9:6

モロナイ書の終わりで、モロナイは父である預言者モルモンからの手紙を何通か載せています。モルモンとモロナイはともに、ニーファイ人の間に大きな悪が蔓延していた時代に生きていました。彼らは邪悪なニーファイ人に悔い改めてイエス・キリストのもとに戻るよう説得しようと奮闘しました。

In the closing chapters of the book of Moroni, Moroni includes some letters that were written to him by his father, the prophet Mormon.  Both Mormon and Moroni lived in a time of great wickedness among the Nephites.  They struggled to convince the wicked Nephites to repent and return to Jesus Christ.

モルモンが息子に宛てた手紙は、モロナイに深い感銘を与えました。モルモンはこれらの手紙の中で、福音の重要な教義を教えています。信仰、希望、慈愛について教えています。善と悪を見分ける責任について教えています。責任のある者のためのバプテスマについて、また幼い子供は罪がないことについて教えています。

The letters that Mormon wrote to his son made a deep impression on Moroni.  Mormon teaches some important doctrines of the gospel in these letters.  He teaches us about faith, hope, and charity.  He teaches us about our responsibility to discern between good and bad.  He teaches us about baptism for those who are accountable and that little children are sinless.

人々の間で罪悪が蔓延していた時代に、モルモンが息子に宛てた手紙は、その内容が心を高めるメッセージであることには驚きを覚えます。モルモンは、当時起こっていた恐ろしい出来事について言及していますが、それらの出来事は手紙の目的ではありません。彼は、自分が置かれている困難な状況に屈したり、あきらめませんでした。

In a time of such wickedness among the people, the letters that Mormon wrote to his son are remarkable for the uplifting messages that they contain.  Mormon does mention the terrible things that were happening, but those things are not the main theme of his letters.  He does not give in to depression or give up because of the difficult situation he finds himself in.

むしろ、彼は救い主イエス・キリストにしっかりと信仰を持ち続けていました。モルモンは真実なこと、正しいこと、そして大きな祝福をもたらすことがらを知っていました。モルモンはそれらを手紙に書いています。彼の手紙は、大いなる暗闇の時代に励ましとなる手紙です。

Rather, he keeps his faith firmly focused on our Savior Jesus Christ.  Mormon knows the things that are true, the things that are right, the things that will bring great blessings.  Those are the things he writes about in his letters.  His letters are letters of encouragement in a time of great darkness.

息子モロナイへの励ましのメッセージは、私たちにとっても励ましのメッセージです。モルモンの時代にほとんどのニーファイ人が福音のメッセージを拒んだのと同じように、今日でも多くの人々が、イエス・キリストとその福音について学ぼうという招きに応じようとしません。

His message of encouragement to his son, Moroni, is a message of encouragement for us as well.  Just as most of the Nephites rejected the message of the gospel in the days of Mormon, so many people today will not respond to the invitations to come and learn about Jesus Christ and his gospel.

しかし、人々が福音のメッセージを受け入れてくれないからといって、福音を伝えるために最善を尽くさなくてもよいというわけではありません。モルモンとモロナイの時代では、聖約に忠実であり続けると、彼らの命は危険にさらされていました。

But just because people may not accept the message of the gospel when it is presented to them does not excuse us from doing our best to share the gospel with them.  In the days of Mormon and Moroni, their lives were in danger if they remained true to their covenants.  

現代では、イエス・キリストを信じているからといって、誰も私たちを殺すことはありません。私たちのメッセージを拒むかもしれません。私たちをあざ笑うかもしれません。私たちの信仰を笑うかもしれません。私たちを社会的に嘲笑するかもしれません。しかし、誰も私たちを殺すことはありません。

In our day, no one is going to kill us because of our belief in Jesus Christ.  They may reject our message.  They may scoff at us.  They may laugh at our beliefs.  They may hold us up to social ridicule.  But no one is going to kill us.

モルモンやモロナイのように、私たちも勤勉に働く必要があります。誰も私たちのメッセージを受け入れなくても構いません。重要なのは、私たちが最善を尽くすことです。最善を尽くせば、私たちの霊も神の王国で休息を得ることができるでしょう。

Like Mormon and Moroni, we too need to labor diligently.  It does not matter if no one accepts our message.  What does matter is that we do our best.  If we do our best, we too will be able to rest our souls in the kingdom of God.

新しい週が始まります。モルモンが息子モロナイに書き残したメッセージについて考えてみましょう。彼が生きていた世界がいかに邪悪なものであったかを考えてみましょう。しかし、人々の邪悪さにもかかわらず、モルモンは憂鬱に屈しなかったことも忘れないでください。彼はあきらめませんでした。彼は福音のメッセージと祝福を周囲の人々に伝えるために最善を尽くしました。この世で私たちに与えられた務めを果たすために最善を尽くしましょう。

As we go through this next week, let’s think about the things that Mormon wrote to his son Moroni.  Let’s remember what a wicked world he lived in.  But, let’s also remember that, in spite of the wickedness of the people, Mormon did not give in to depression.  He did not give up.  He did his best to bring the message and blessings of the gospel to those around him.  Let’s do our best to perform that labor that we have been assigned in this world.
