Behold, I am a disciple of Jesus Christ, the Son of God.  I have been called of him to declare his word among his people, that they might have everlasting life.  3 Nephi 5:13

預言者モルモンは、先代の預言者たちの記録を要約しながら、彼自身のコメントをいくつか付け加えています。救い主の降誕のしるしが与えられてから 25 年間、多くの戦争や困難があったと述べています。

As the prophet Mormon works on his abridgement of the writings of the earlier prophets, he adds a few comments of his own.  He tells us that during the 25 years after the sign of the birth of the Savior had been given, that there had been many wars and hardships.

By the 25th year, the Nephite people had again become righteous.  They were actively trying to teach others about the gospel.  Mormon mentions that the Nephites had success teaching the Lamanites.  Those Lamanites had been taken prisoners during the last battles.  The Nephites went into the prisons and taught the gospel to the prisoners.  Those who repented and accepted the gospel were allowed to go free.

続いてモルモンはニーファイの版を要約することの難しさについて少し述べています。起こったことの「百分の一さえ」書くことさえできないこと、また、この小さな記録を作るのがいかに難しいかを述べています。しかし、彼はそれが将来の後世の人々にとって非常に重要になることを知っていました。

Mormon then talks a little about the difficulties of abridging the Plates of Nephi.  He says that he cannot even write “even a hundredth part” of all the things that had happened.  He tells us how difficult it is to make this small record.  However, he knows that it will be very important to future generations.

In verse 13, Mormon makes an important statement.  In his statement, there are two important parts.  First, he tells us that he is a disciple of Jesus Christ.  For almost his entire life, he has been the leader of the Nephite armies and has helped them win many battles.  You might think that he would talk about what a great general he had been, or how many battles he had won.  

しかし彼はそのようなことは何も語っていません。彼にとって最も重要なことは、自分がイエス・キリストの弟子であるということです。私たちの人生もそうあるべきです。どんなことを成し遂げたとしても、最も重要なことは、私たちがイエス・キリストの弟子であるということです。

He does not talk about any of those things.  The most important thing to him is that he is a disciple of Jesus Christ.  That is how it should be in our own lives.  No matter what things we may have accomplished, the most important thing for us is that we are disciples of Jesus Christ.

つぎに、イエス・キリストの弟子として、彼は私たちの義務が何であるかを思い起こさせています。彼は人々に福音を教えるために召されたと述べています。これは救い主の真の弟子すべてに与えられた任務であり、私たちも同様です。

Second, as a disciple of Jesus Christ, he reminds us of what our duty is.  He says that he has been called to teach the people the gospel.  This is the same assignment that is given to every true disciple of the Savior.  This is the same assignment that has been given to us.

この任務はなぜそれほど重要なのでしょうか。モルモンは人々に永遠の命を得るために福音を教えるのだと説明しています。それ以上に重要なことはないのです。

Why is this assignment so important?  Mormon explains that he teaches the gospel to people so that they might have eternal life.  Nothing is more important than that.  

私たちの誰も偉大な司令官にはなれません。誰も国民を率いて敵と戦うこともできません。誰も預言者にもなれません。

None of us are going to be great generals.  None of us are going to lead our people into battle against their enemies.  None of us are going to be prophets.

しかし、モルモンと同じように、私たちは皆、イエス・キリストの真の弟子になることができます。モルモンと同じように、私たちは皆、福音を他の人に伝えることができます。モルモンと同じように、私たちは皆、他の人が永遠の命を得られるよう助けることができます。

However, just like Mormon, we all can be true disciples of Jesus Christ.  Just like Mormon, we can all share the gospel with others.  Just like Mormon, we can all help others to gain eternal life.  

私たちは皆、イエス・キリストの弟子であり、他の人々をキリストのもとに導く使命を持っています。

We are all disciples of Jesus Christ and have the assignment to bring others unto Christ.

新しい週が始まります。救い主の弟子としての自分の義務について少し考えてみる時間を取ってみましょう。毎日の生活で、自分が真の弟子として生きているかどうかを吟味してみましょう。天父のすべての子供たちが永遠の命の祝福を受けるにふさわしい者となれるよう助けることで、救い主にさらに似た者となれるよう最善を尽くしましょう。毎日の行いと言葉のすべてにおいて、イエス・キリストの真の弟子となりましょう。

As we go through this next week, let’s spend some time thinking about our duties as disciples of the Savior.  Let’s examine our own lives and see if we are living like true disciples.  Let’s do our best to become more like our Savior by helping all of Heavenly Father’s children qualify for the blessings of eternal life.  Let’s all be true disciples of Jesus Christ in all that we do and say every day.
