見よ、現世は人が神にお会いする用意をする時期である。まことに、現世の生涯は、人が各自の務めを果たす時期である。アルマ３４：３２
For behold, this life is the time for men to prepare to meet God; yea, behold, the day of this life is the day for men to perform their labors. Alma 34:32
アルマ書のこの部分では、アルマとアミュレクがゾーラム人の間で行った伝道活動について書かれています。ゾーラム人はもともとニーファイ人であり、ニーファイ人から離反する前に福音を教えられていました。彼らは福音を失い、多くの誤った教義を信じていました。
In this part of the Book of Alma, we read about the missionary labors of Alma and Amulek among the Zoramites. The Zoramites were originally Nephites, and had been taught the gospel before they dissented from the Nephites. They had lost the gospel and believed in many false doctrines.
アルマとアミュレクは人々に重要な教義の原則、特にイエス・キリストの贖罪について教えました。彼らは、祈ることは教会にいるときだけではなく、いつでもどこでも天の御父に祈るべきであると教えました。
Alma and Amulek taught the people about important doctrinal principles, particularly about the Atonement of Jesus Christ. They taught that praying was not limited to the time people were in Church, but that they should pray to Heavenly Father at all times and in all places.
彼らは種を植えることを信仰を得ることに例えて教えました。アルマは人々に、種を育てたいなら、種を世話し、水をやり、育てるのは個人の責任であると教えました。信仰を持ちたいなら、信仰を育むような小さな簡単なことをする必要があります。自分の役割を果たさずに、種を責めることはできません。
They used the example of planting a seed, and compared it to gaining faith. Alma taught the people that it was their own individual responsibility to take care of the seed, to water it and to nurture it, if they wanted the seed to grow. If they wanted to have faith, they needed to do those small and simple things that will nurture faith. If they do not do their part, they cannot blame the seed.
アミュレクは救い主の来臨について証し、イエス・キリストについて証した古代の預言者の言葉を読みました。アミュレクは人々に、信仰を得たいのであれば、この種を蒔くこと、言い換えれば、預言者の言葉を信じ始めることが必要であると教えました。
Amulek testified of the coming of the Savior and read the words of ancient prophets who also testified of Jesus Christ. He taught the people that they needed to plant this seed, in other words, to begin to believe the words of the prophets, if they wanted to gain faith.
アミュレクは、現代の私たち一人一人に当てはまる重要な原則も教えました。この人生は、天の御父が忠実な者に約束された祝福を受けるにふさわしいことを証明する時間として与えられていると教えました。アミュレクは民に、そして私たちに、この地上での時間を生産的に使う必要があると警告しています。
Amulek also taught an important principle that applies to each of us today. He taught that this life is given to us as a time to prove ourselves worthy of the blessings that Heavenly Father has promised to the faithful. He warns the people, and us, that we need to use this time here on earth productively.
後になって悔い改める時間は必ずあるので、ただ楽しく過ごして将来のことは心配する必要はない、とサタンがささやく嘘に耳を傾ける人々がいます。これを「死の床」での悔い改めと呼ぶ人もいます。
There are some people who listen to the lies of Satan, who tells them that they should just have a good time and not worry about the future, because there will always be time to repent later on. Some have referred to this as “death bed” repentance.
悲しいことに、これはサタンの策略に過ぎません。サタンは、私たちが悔い改めたり、信仰を得たり、戒めを守ったりすることを望んでいません。戒めを守るのは難しすぎる、楽しくない、制限が厳しすぎるなどと、サタンは懸命に私たちを説得しようとします。
Sadly, this is just a trick of Satan. He does not want us to repent, or to gain faith, or to keep the commandments. He tries very hard to convince us that it is too hard to keep the commandments, that it is not fun, or that it is too restrictive.
私たちがこの地上にやって来るとき、どれだけ長くここに留まれるかは分かりません。ある時点で、誰もが、ここでの時間が終わり、霊界に戻らなければならないと告げられるのです。
When we come to live on this earth, we have no idea how long we will be permitted to stay here. At some point, every single one of us will be told our time here is over and we have to go back to the Spirit world.
その時が来た時、ここでの時間を賢く使っていればよいのですが。ここでの時間は、学び、成長し、試練や困難を経験するために与えられた時間です。イエス・キリストの真の弟子になる方法を学ぶために使うべき時間です。
Hopefully, when that time comes, we will have used our time here wisely. This is the time we are given to learn, to grow, to experience trials and hardships. This is the time we need to use to learn how to be true disciples of Jesus Christ.
今が私たちに与えられたすべての時間です。それが終わると、準備したり、悔い改めたり、成長したりする時間はもうありません。私たちは、いつかやろうと計画していたことではなく、この人生での行動、実際に行ったことによって裁かれるのです。
This is the all the time that we get. When it is over, there is no more time to prepare, to repent, to grow. We will be judged by our actions in this life, by the things that we have actually done, and not by the things we were planning to do someday.
学校では期末テストがあります。誰もが期末テストがあることを知っています。賢い生徒は事前に勉強してテストの準備をします。愚かな生徒は勉強するよりも楽しいことを好み、後で勉強する時間はいつでもあると考えます。私たちは皆、自分に「期末テスト」があることを知っています。いつなのかはわかりませんが、それが来ることは知っています。私たちは良い生徒になれるでしょうか?
In school, there is a final test. Everyone knows that there will be a final test. Wise students study and prepare in advance for the test. Unwise students prefer to do fun things instead of studying, thinking there will always be time to study later on. We all know that we will each have a “final test”. We don’t know when, but we know it is coming. Will we be good students?
新しい週が始まります。人生は短いということを心に留めて過ごしましょう。この世にどれだけ長くいられるかは誰にも分かりません。悔い改めを先延ばしにするのは良い計画ではありません。自分自身の「期末テスト」が来たら、勉強したり準備したりする時間はもうありません。古代と現代の預言者の言葉に従うよう最善を尽くし、天に召される日のためにできる限りの備えをしましょう。
As we go through this next week, let’s remember that life is short. No one knows how long they will be allowed to stay on this earth. Putting off repentance is not a good plan. When we come to our own “final test”, there won’t be any more time to study or to prepare. Let’s do our best to follow the words of the prophets, both ancient and modern, and do all that we can do to be prepared for the day when we will be called home.
