さて、わたしはあなたがたが謙遜であり、従順で素直であり、容易に勧告に従い、忍耐と寛容に富み、すべてのことについて自制し、いつも熱心に神の戒めを守るように、また霊的にも物質的にも、必要としているものは何でも求め、与えられるものについては何であろうといつも神に感謝するように願っている。またあなたがたは信仰と希望、慈愛を必ず持つようにしてほしい。そうするときに、あなたがたはいつも多くの善い行いをするであろう。 アルマ７：２３−２４

And now I would that ye should be humble, and be submissive and gentle; easy to be entreated; full of patience and long-suffering; being temperate in all things; being diligent in keeping the commandments of God at all times; asking for whatsoever things ye stand in need, both spiritual and temporal; always returning thanks unto God for whatsoever things ye do receive.  Alma 7:23

息子アルマの記述から、ニーファイ人は邪悪になり、イエス・キリストの福音を拒んだことがわかります。当時、アルマは教会の大祭司とニーファイ人の大さばきつかさの両方を務めていました。

As we continue our study of the account of Alma the younger, we find that the Nephites have become wicked and have rejected the gospel of Jesus Christ.  At that time, Alma was serving as both the High Priest of the Church and the Chief Judge of the Nephites.  

アルマは福音を宣べ伝えるために全ての時間を費やせるよう、大さばきつかさの職を辞任することにしました。非常に高慢で、ただ金持ちになりたいと考えているゼラヘムラの地で彼は宣教活動を始めました。

Alma decides to resign as the Chief Judge so he can spend all his time preaching the gospel.  He starts his missionary activity in Zarahemla, where the people have become very proud and just want to be rich.

彼は人々に、罪を悔い改めて主の前にへりくだらなければならないと証しました。 彼らの父親が以前それらを教えていたことを思い起こさせました。アルマは人々に「あなたはこの心の大きな変化を経験したことがあるか」と尋ねました。

He testifies to the people that they must repent of their sins and humble themselves before the Lord.  He reminds them that their fathers have also taught all these things before.  He asks the people, “Have ye experienced this mighty change of heart?”  

そしてさらに重要なことですが、アルマは「今でもそのように感じられるか」と彼らに尋ねました。

Then more importantly, he asks them “Can you feel so now?”

それは、私たち一人ひとりが考えなければならない問題です。私たちは皆、イエス・キリストを救い主として受け入れ、バプテスマを受け、私たちを導き教えてくれる聖霊の賜物を与えられています。私たちはこの大きな心の変化を経験したことがありますか？そして、もしそうなら今でもそう感じることができるでしょうか？

That is a question that we each need to think about.  We have all accepted Jesus Christ as our Savior, have been baptized, and have been given the Gift of the Holy Ghost to lead us and to teach us.  Have we experienced this mighty change of heart?  And if so, can we feel so now?

人々が悔い改めて主の御霊を感じることができるよう、アルマは彼らに何をすべきかを教えています。私たちもこのメッセージから学ぶことができます。

To help the people repent and once again feel the Spirit of the Lord, Alma teaches them what they should do.  We can benefit from this message, too.

まず、私たちは謙虚でなければなりません。高慢さや傲慢さを捨て去る必要があります。柔和で従順である必要があります。それは、私たちに意志の力を持たないとか、誰かに言われたことを盲目的にやるという意味ではありません。それは、私たちが預言者や使徒の言葉に耳を傾け、その言葉について祈り、それに従うことを意味します。

First, we must be humble.  We need to put aside any pride or arrogance.  We need to be meek and submissive.  That does not mean that we have no will power or that we simply do anything that someone tells us to do.  It means that we listen to the words of Prophets and Apostles, pray about those words, and then follow them.

私たちは忍耐強く、辛抱強く寛容である必要があります。人として私たちは本質的に短気なものです。私たちは今すぐ、すべてが欲しいと望みます。私たちは待つのが好きではありません。しかし、主の方法はその様なものではありません。約束されたすべての祝福は、主が定められた時に、私たちにもたらされます。私たちは忍耐を学ぶ必要があります。

We need to be patient and long-suffering.  As mortals, we are by nature impatient.  We want everything right now.  We don’t like to wait.  But that is not how the Lord works.  All the promised blessings will come to us, in the Lord’s due time.  We need to learn patience.

私たちは戒めを守ることに勤勉でなければなりません。これは、私たちが聖約の道をしっかりと歩まなければならないことを意味します。必要な祝福を受けようとするなら、私たちは天父の戒めを守ることによって天父を愛していることを示す必要があります。

We need to be diligent in keeping the commandments.  This means that we must stay firmly on the covenant path.  If we are going to receive the blessings we need, we need to show Heavenly Father that we love him by keeping his commandments.

私たちは毎日祈り、導きを求め、必要なものを求める必要があります。信仰を持って求めるなら、私たちはそれらの祝福を受けることができます。ただし、それらの祝福は主のしかるべき時にもたらされるということを忘れないでください。

We need to pray every day, asking for guidance and for the things that we need.  As we ask in faith, we will receive those blessings.  Remember, though, that those blessings come in the due time of the Lord.  

私たちは、天父が毎日送ってくださる多くの祝福に、感謝することを決して忘れてはなりません。感謝はとても大切です。祝福に感謝することで、その祝福がどこから来たのかを思い出すことができます。

We need to remember to always thank Heavenly Father for the many blessings that he sends to us each day.  Gratitude is very important.  Expressing gratitude for our blessings helps us remember where those blessings come from.

これらすべてのことを忘れずに行えば、「いつも多くの善い行いができる」とアルマは教えています。イエス・キリストの弟子として、常に善い行いにあふれるというのが私たちの目標であるべきです。

If we remember to do all these things, Alma tells us that we will “always abound in good works”.  As disciples of Jesus Christ, that should be our goal, to always abound in good works.

新しい週が始まります。アルマがゼラヘムラでニーファイ人に教えたことを思い起こしてみましょう。彼が私たちに与えた勧告に従うよう最善を尽くしましょう。謙虚に、忍耐強く、従順に、祈りを込めて、感謝の気持ちを持ちましょう。イエス・キリストのより良い従者となるために最善を尽くしましょう。

As we go through this next week, let’s remember what Alma taught the Nephites in Zarahemla.  Let’s do our best to follow the instructions he gave us.  Let’s be humble, patient, obedient, prayerful, and grateful.  Let’s do our best to become better followers of Jesus Christ.
