Now Abinadi said unto him: I will not recall the words which I have spoken unto you concerning this people, for they are true; and that ye may know of their surety I have suffered myself that I have fallen into your hands. Yea, and I will suffer even unto death, and I will not recall my words, and they shall stand as a testimony against you. And if ye slay e ye will shed innocent blood, and this shall also stand as a testimony against you at the last day. Mosiah 17:9-10

The story of the prophet Abinadi is very interesting. There are many lessons we can learn from the account of his experiences.

Abinadi was called to preach the gospel to the people of king Noah. The people rejected his preaching and the king Noah wanted Abinadi arrested and put in prison. He had to flee for his own safety.
２年後、主は同じ人々に福音を宣べ伝えるよう再びアビナダイを召されました。あなたなら、そのような召しがきたらどうするでしょうか？あなたを拒んだ人々のところに喜んで戻りますか？ノア王があなたを逮捕するだろうと主に訴えますか？それとも、アビナダイのように、主を信頼して進んで行きますか？
Two years later, the Lord again called Abinadi to preach the gospel to those same people. How would you have reacted to a call like that? Would you willing go back to a people who had rejected you? Would you complain to the Lord that king Noah wants to arrest you? Or would you go willing, trusting in the Lord, like Abinadi did?

Almost as soon as he begins to preach, Abinadi is arrested and taken before king Noah. Still determined to follow the call from the Lord, Abinadi tries to teach king Noah and his priests. The priests want to kill him, but the Lord protected him. He finished his message, as he had been called to do. He preached the gospel of Jesus Christ with power and authority.
嫉妬深い祭司たちはアビナダイを殺すよう主張しました。アビナダイは、自分が言った言葉、特にノア王とその民に対する警告の言葉を取り消すよう言いました。もし、その言葉を取り消さなければ、彼は死刑に処せられるのです。
The jealous priests insisted that Abinadi be killed. Abinadi was told that he must recall the words that he had spoken, particularly the words of warning against king Noah and his people. If he did not recall those words, he would be put to death.

Now, if you are Abinadi, what do you do?

Abinadi boldly testifies before king Noah and his priests. He tells them he will not recall his words because they are all true. He is willing to die to prove to the people that he has taught true principles. He also warns king Noah that if he kills Abinadi, he will be shedding innocent blood, which will stand as a testimony against the king in the day of judgment.
ノア王はこれが真実であることを知っており、アビナダイを釈放しようとします。しかし、彼の邪悪な祭司たちは、アビナダイが王を侮辱したので殺されるべきであると王を説得します。ノア王は命令を下し、アビナダイは殉教の死を遂げます。
King Noah knows that this is true and is about to release Abinadi. His evil priests, however, convince the king that Abinadi has insulted the king and should be killed. King Noah gives the order and Abinadi suffers a martyr’s death.
この話から得られる教訓のひとつは、私たちは主の戒めに従う勇気を常に持つべきだということです。たとえそれが恐ろしく、困難でも、私たちは主がすべてを管理しておられることを覚えておく必要があります。
One lesson from this account is that we should always have courage to follow the commandments of the Lord. Even when it sounds scary or difficult, we need to remember that the Lord is in control.
もうひとつの教訓は、物事は必ずしも自分の期待通りに行くとは限らないということです。アビナダイがノア王から逃れ、無事に戻ることを祈った人も多かったのではないでしょうか。しかし、それらの祈りは聞き届けられませんでした。アビナダイは殺害されました。
Another lesson is that things do not always work out the way we expect them to. There may have been many people praying for Abinadi, for his safe return and for his escape from king Noah. However, those prayers were not answered. Abinadi was killed.
なぜそんなことが起きたのでしょうか？ なぜ主はアビナダイを救わなかったのでしょうか？
How could that happen? Why didn’t the Lord save Abinadi?
答えのひとつは、後にアンモナイハ市で多くの女と子供たちが殉教した際に、アルマがアミュレクに話した言葉によって分かります。アルマは、主が邪悪な人々に罪を犯すことを許しておられるのは、彼らに下される罰が彼ら自身の邪悪な選択に基づいて公正なものとなるためだと述べています。
Part of the answer is given later by Alma, speaking to Amulek, during the martyrdom of many women and children in the city of Ammonihah. Alma said that the Lord allows the wicked people to commit sin so that the punishments that will come to them will be just and based on their own wicked decisions.

As we go through this next week, let’s spend some time thinking about the experience of Abinadi. Let’s remember his courage and faith in the face of great persecution. Let’s remember his determination to serve the Lord in all things, even if those things included death. Let’s remember that not all prayers result in a miraculous escape from trials. Sometimes, prayers re answered very differently than what we expect. Let’s remember that the Lord is in control of all things and that all things, however hard they may be for us to accept, work together for good.
